US/JA(M) 107minsThe enchanting and powerfully affecting new film from David & Nathan Zellner, inspired by true events, KUMIKO, THE TREAS-URE HUNTER tells the story of a young woman’s extraordinary journey from Japan to Minnesota, in search of a mythic fortune.

Gloriously realised and utterly one-of-a-kind, KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER is a tender and beguiling tale of obsession and delusion that lays bare the universal human need for adven-ture, and soars to a profoundly moving climax that reveals both the danger and magic of the intoxicating effects of cinema.

GE (MA) 87minsTangerines is a story of awakening humanity in the midst of vio-lence, told with intimacy and elegance by Georgian film director and screenwriter Zaza Urushadze. Nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2015. Tangerines is the spare yet haunting tale of an older Estonian man who cares for two wounded soldiers from opposite sides of the 1990s-era war in Georgia. The fighters vow to kill each other when they recover, but their ex-tended period of recovery has a humanizing effect that might tran-scend ethnic divides. Set against a beautiful landscape defiled by war, this poetic film makes an eloquent statement for peace.

US (M) 85minsCOMMUNITY FUNDRAISER SCREENING

ISOLATED started out as a surfing documentary, turned into a quest for peace, and started an initiative. The people involved with this film went looking for untouched territory and what they found were cries for help that had been silenced. The dangers they faced that were shown in this documentary only show a portion of what they encountered in their travels. They risked their lives to film the “unfilmable” and what they dis-covered pushed them to try and bring peace to some new found friends because of a request that changed their lives forever.

FR (M) 118minsSamba opens with an impressive winding single shot that positions us right in the middle of a high-class wedding reception, and then tracks back to the kitchen where we meet our eponymous protagonist, who’s sweating away scrubbing the dishes. It’s a telling way to open a film about a refugee, whose dreams – to become a chef, to stay in France – are always just out of reach. Despite its urgent and topical subject matter, this story comes cloaked in charm and humour, as is to be expected from co-directors, Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, who delivered the 2011 smash hit, The Intouchables. The comedy’s a little more nuanced here, but while there’s humour to be mined, make no mistake – there’s rage simmer-ing just below the film’s surface.

IT (M) 89mins Italian comedian and satirist Pierfrancesco ‘Pif ’ Diliberto makes a hugely auspicious and entertaining directorial debut with this semi-autobiographical romantic comedy of childhood and first love, set in the tumultuous world of 1970’s Italy. The film follows our precocious hero Arturo wittily examining the pervasive influence the Cosa Nostra holds over the everyday lives of his family and community as he commences a life-long romantic pur-suit of beautiful classmate and neighbour Flora.Adored by local critics & audiences, THE MAFIA KILLS ONLY IN SUMMER became a huge sleeper hit at the Italian box office. Current Senate President Pietro Grasso recently declared it to be the best work on the Mafia ever made.
