The 40th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy® Awards Program is published by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. © 2013 NATAS

Welcome!

On behalf of our Board of Trustees, who are present here this evening, and the 13,000 members of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), I welcome you to the 40th anniversary of the Daytime Entertainment Emmy® Awards. I would also like to welcome our partners in this year’s telecast, The HLN Television Network and LocoDistro.

We are happy to be bringing the Daytime Emmy® Awards to you live again from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, and we have put together an exciting evening to celebrate and honor the best of Daytime Television!

We are thrilled to be presenting the prestigious Daytime Emmy® Awards, once again, to our many viewers and fans across the world as a live broadcast. This year, we are especially honored to have the men and women in our armed forces watching this program on The American Forces Network. We are proud to continue honoring Daytime Television, the dramas, the talk shows, morning shows, culinary, children’s and educational programming on national television, a grand tradition for the past 40 years.

In addition to our esteemed nominees, we at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences are proud to honor game show icon Monty Hall and legendary producer Bob Stewart with our 2013 Daytime Lifetime Achievement Awards.

This evening’s festivities would not be possible without the help of all our partners and sponsors, and we thank them for their commitment to Daytime Television and NATAS. In addition, we want to thank our dedicated staff, our National Trustees, and our Awards’ Committee members for all of their tireless work in making tonight’s show a success.

While thanking our colleagues at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) for helping to make the 40th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy® Awards a memorable event, we especially would like to thank you, the Daytime Community, for your enthusiasm, your talent and your dedication to the excellence which we honor this evening.

We look forward to seeing you again next year.

Sincerely,Malachy WiengesChairThe National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History has formed a Partnership with the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) to launch a three-year collecting initiative by the museum to include artifacts from Daytime Television in their national entertainment collection to illustrate the influence of the medium on American Culture. At a ceremony at the Smithsonian

on May 9, 2013, the initial donations of show scripts and other memorabilia were presented. The items included a gown worn by Susan Lucci on a national magazine cover after winning her 1999 Daytime Emmy® Award, a Jeopardy! script with handwritten notes from Alex Trebek and a script from the first video to be released in the Barney & the Backyard Gang series along with a plush toy of the purple dinosaur. n

One of the highlights of the 40th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards is the Lifetime

Achievement honor. This year, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) has selected two recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award, Monty Hall and Bob Stewart.

Monty Hall has accrued some numbers throughout a dynamic career that provide him comfort and joy. At

91, he has been married to wife Marilyn for 65 years. He has three children and five grandchildren. In February, Hall celebrated the 50th anniversary of “Let’s Make a Deal,” having hosted about 4,500 episodes of the longest continuously running show in television history. But the number he is most proud of today is 1 billion, as in dollars he raised for charity over 65 years with Variety International, the Children’s Charity, where Hall serves as International Chairman.

“Even though my family was poor when I was a child, I grew up at the feet of a lady, my mother Rose, who was a great fund raiser for children, and my grandfather who helped many people come from overseas to Winnipeg where we lived,” Hall says. “Working for charity is a commandment for us. My mother taught me that it is the right thing to do. There is a great pleasure and satisfaction in doing this.”

A few twists of fate in Monty Hall’s life allowed him to make a difference in the lives of millions of people worldwide. In early 1940, the 29-year-old heir to a clothing manufacturer in Winnipeg, Manitoba spotted Hall, then 19, scrubbing floors at a warehouse. The next day, the heir, Max Freed, bumped into Hall’s father and asked why his son was not in college. Hall’s father Maurice explained that Monty ran out of money after one year of school. With “Walter Mitty” dreams occupying his mind, the young Hall washed floors and delivered parcels by bicycle in subzero temperatures to help support the family through lean times. Freed said to Maurice, “Tell your son to come by my office tomorrow.”

“I went to see Max and he said I will pay for your schooling if you promise to keep a good grade average and report to me every month, pay me back when you can, promise never to tell anyone where you got the money and make the same investment someday for someone else,” Hall says. “I asked why he picked me. He said ‘I knew your parents and I thought here is a young man who should be given a chance.’”

Hall made the deal of his lifetime. He got good grades, paid back Freed’s $990 investment in tuition and expenses, kept Freed’s anonymity for more than 30 years, and began paying forward his good fortune after graduating with a

Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba. Hall applied to and was rejected from medical school. But at college he had starred in musicals and plays and served as emcee of Canadian Army shows during World War II. Giving up on medicine, Hall moved to Toronto to work as an actor, singer, emcee and sportscaster. Fate intervened again when Hall met a young actress named Marilyn Plottel. They were married in 1947. Hall’s father-in-law, a member of Variety International, suggested he join the club.

“Many times I’ve had chats with doctors and told them I steered off from medicine,” Hall says. “They have said ‘do you have any idea that you have done more for people through your celebrity than you could have as a doctor?’ So that makes you feel good.”

The Variety Club began in 1927 as a social group in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. On Christmas Eve 1928, a desperate mother abandoned her baby at the Sheridan Square Theatre with a note that read: “Please take care of my baby ... I have eight others. My husband is out of work. She was born on Thanksgiving Day. I have always heard of the goodness of show business and pray to God that you will look out for her.” The

Variety Club found the baby a home and on October 22, 1928, Variety, the Children’s Charity was chartered as a non-profit organization in Pennsylvania “for the purpose of aiding physically, mentally and socially disadvantaged and special needs children in all corners of the world.”

After moving to New York in 1955, Hall held telethons for Variety on weekends in Philadelphia while working on the CBS show “Monitor.”

“I would finish taping my show on Friday and I would take a plane to Philadelphia to emcee a banquet that night, and then on Saturday and Sunday I would do a 20-hour telethon,” Hall says. “It was tiring but sitting on the plane back to New York you would be basking in the thought that you just raised two and half million dollars for children.”

In 1960, Hall became emcee of CBS’s “Video Village,” which took him to Hollywood. There he sold his first production, “Your First Impression,” to NBC, followed by “Let’s Make a Deal,” which aired in 1964.

Throughout his career, Hall never stopped giving time to charity. Over six decades he has received more than 300 awards for his philanthropic efforts. In 1981, he received the title of International Chairman at Variety.

“Monty is quite a unique human being,” says Jack Cannons, COO of Variety International. “He doesn’t hold himself any higher or any lower than anyone else. We love and respect Monty and he loves and respects the charity. He has never lost the spirit. Even though ‘Let’s Make a Deal’ hasn’t been seen in all parts of the world, his achievements for charity have made his name known worldwide.”

Because of the money Hall has raised, Children’s hospital wings are named in his honor at Hahnemann Medical Center, in Philadelphia; UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles; Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto; and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Yet, with so many honors and one of the longest careers in television, Hall is proudest of his family. His wife Marilyn received an Emmy Award as co-executive producer of “Do You Remember Love,” a drama about Alzheimer’s disease. Of his three children, Joanna Gleason, is a Tony award-winning actress, Richard Hall, is an Emmy award-winning television producer, and Sharon Hall is a television executive.

“I’d like to be remembered as someone who cared, who did his best for his friends, his family and his country,” Hall says. “What you do with your life is your epitaph.” n

BOB STEWART:An Uncommon Genius in a

Common Man

by Tim Friend

I n this 40th anniversary year of the Daytime Emmy Awards, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences

(NATAS) has chosen to honor two icons from the Game Show genre with its Lifetime Achievement Award, one of them being legendary producer, Bob Stewart.

Possessing a unique combination of talents, Bob Stewart became one of the most prolific creators and producers of game shows in television history. Known among his close friends and coworkers to have a genius for wordplay, he coupled that with a deep understanding of human behavior and a deep compassion for others to create shows that became staples in the game show genre.

“There was an instinct in him that I believe was rare,” said Sande Stewart, who was often involved when his father developed new shows. When developing an idea, he worked relentlessly through every possible permutation and pitfall until the concept seemed elegantly simple. “He was always pursuing new and different ideas,” his son said. “Three of his biggest hits of his career - ‘The Price is Right,’ ‘To Tell

the Truth’ and ‘Password’ - were each extremely different. I believe he strove to always create very unique programs.”

During an interview for the Archive of American Television, Bob Stewart revealed his vision of a successful game show. “A game show is a game show if the audience sitting at home talks aloud to the television screen … Once you cause somebody at home to talk to the set aloud even by himself or herself then you’ve got a good game show. Make that person at home yell something, yell the answer,” he said.

“Bob was just so bright and interested in everything. Nothing bored him,” says Betty White, who regularly appeared on Stewart’s hit “Password” and became lifelong friends with Stewart and his son Sande. “He was always looking for new things and wanting to find out more about people and places and things that were going on in the world.”

While working as a staff producer in the early 1950s at WRCA-TV in New York City, Stewart often passed by a storefront at 50th Street and Seventh Avenue. Curious about

Bob Stewart with Bill Cullen Anne Marie Schmitt and Bob Stewart

why the store was always crowded, he learned that it auctioned its goods to the highest bidder. A new idea began to form that would lead to one of Stewart’s greatest successes “The Price is Right”. “I used to stop by there and watch the stuff and I thought to myself, ‘anybody who pays a nickel more than the retail price has been taken, but anybody who gets it for even a nickel less has got a bargain,” Stewart said.

White says Stewart was a master at creating concepts. And while his ideas appear simple, their development was anything but. “You research it and you play it again and again so you can find all the little snags and things that can have holes,” White says. “Finally after enough run-throughs, you have a show. What I love about television game shows is that they are a mental exercise – if the game is worth its salt.”

Stewart began his career in radio at WNEW-AM in New York and moved on to television at NBC. In 1955, Stewart hired Monty Hall, fresh from Toronto, as a substitute emcee

for a show at WRCA. A year later, Stewart and Hall met again on the street. Hall arranged a meeting for them with producer Mark Goodson. Stewart first pitched his concept for what would later become “To Tell the Truth” under Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Productions. A few months later, Stewart bumped into Goodson. Over hamburgers, Goodson

asked Stewart if he had any other ideas. Of course he did. Stewart was still thinking about the crowded auction. He explained to Goodson: “You bid for things and if you don’t go over the retail price you win it. And he said ‘really? We like that.’ We went back to his office, and in his office he had lamps and chairs and he starts calling in all the secretaries to bid on the various things, and that gave birth to ‘The Price is Right.’”

In the summer of 1960, Sande remembers sitting in the backyard at age 11 with his father, who was ruminating

over a notepad. His father turned to him and said “I’m going to give you a word and tell me the first thing that comes to your mind.”

“I was probably the first person to play Password,” Sande says. “He looked at me and said ‘ketchup!’ I said ‘it’s in the refrigerator. I’ll get it if you want any.’ Then he explained how to play the game. It was a lot of fun.”

Stewart was extremely loyal to his friends, who included White and Allen Ludden and also Bill and Ann Cullen. Bill Cullen became one of Stewart’s most frequent hosts.

“Bob was an incredibly creative man,” says Ann Cullen. “We met in 1956 when Bob came to our apartment to introduce Bill to his new creation. He explained the concept and we started bidding on Bob’s briefcase. Bob said we’ve got 13 weeks for the show. Let’s go for it. They kept that original show on the air for seven years.”

Ann says there was a magical chemistry between Bill Cullen and Stewart. “One time ‘The Price is Right’ was running over and Bob had no way to speak to Bill to tell him how to finish. So Bob held up one finger and Bill said without pausing, “And this is beginning of the ‘one bid round.’”

The Cullens and Stewarts were frequent dinner companions. Ann referred to their many outings as ‘the days

of wine and laughter.”Stewart left Goodson-Todman in 1964 to form Bob

Stewart Productions. The first show was “Eye Guess,” which premiered January 3, 1966 on NBC with Bill Cullen as host. Stewart later formed Basada, Inc. (named after sons Barry, Sande, and David), and developed the Pyramid series.

Betty White says their close group played games together regularly over the years. Ann Cullen still hosts a poker game with White and Sande Stewart sitting in for his father.

“I was so privileged to have Bob’s friendship. The day could never end before we would touch base,” White says. “We had the kind of friendship that goes on and on.”

Stewart earned nine Emmy Awards as an executive producer of game shows and in 2009 was inducted into the Television Academy’s Hall of Fame. He held the record for the most Daytime Emmy Awards in game show production until 2006. Stewart’s major successes include “The Price Is Right,” “To Tell the Truth,” “Password,” and the “Pyramid series”, which premiered in 1973 as “The $10,000 Pyramid.”

In 2008, Stewart was asked in an interview how he would like to be remembered. “Occasionally,” said Stewart, who died May 4, 2012. He’s gotten more than his wish. n
