  • ABOUT COMPOUND MEDICATIONS

The primary reason for compounding is due to a patient being unable or unwilling to use medication as directed.

Many patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes, or require a dosage that is different from the standard drug strengths.

With a physicians consent, a compounding pharmacist can:o Adjust the strength of a medicationo Avoid unwanted ingredients, such as dyes, preservative, lactose or sugaro Add flavor to make the medication more palatableo Prepare medications using unique delivery systems

  • ABOUT COMPOUND MEDICATIONS cont.

Pharmaceutical compounding is a branch of pharmacy that continues to play the crucial role of drug development.

Compounding pharmacists and medicinal chemists develop / test combinations of active pharmaceuticals and delivery systems for new formulations so that the active ingredients are effective, stable, easy to use, and acceptable to patients.
