UNTrees
Project Brief
Narrative
The student led project, UNTrees intends to plant fifty trees on UNT’s main campus. UNTrees’
goal will be accomplished through student organizational help, faculty support and alumni
engagement. The project will be an event to teach UNT’s community how to plant trees on
Arbor Day, April 24th, 2014.
Budget
Each 2” caliper tree will cost $500. This includes the transport fee and the mulch. Irrigation lines
cost anywhere from $200-$600 depending on the trees’ locations. The trees will be planted in
clusters in order to save money. UNTrees is working with UNT Facilities to determine the exact
amount for each tree location. Lanse Fullinwider from UNT Grounds has stated that there are
more than enough shovels for the Arbor Day event’s volunteers.
Schedule
The Project will run from August 2014 through April 2015.
Stakeholders
The Stakeholders currently involved include
Mr. Lanse Fullinwider, Grounds Maintenance Manager
Dr. Todd Spinks, Director of UNT Sustainability
Dr. Judith Forney, College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism
Dr. JiYoung Kim, Assistant Professor, Merchandising and Digital Retailing
Dr. Murray Rice, Associate Professor and Applied Geography Master’s Program Advisor
Dr. Young Hoon Kim, Interim Chair
Mrs. Dee Wilson, Senior Lecturer, Merchandising and Digital Retailing, Coordinator of
Internship Program
Ms. Kelsey Henry, President of Bored In Denton student organization
4
Ms. Jessica Lovell, President of National Retail Federation Student Association
Ms. Alyssa Wolverton, President of Meaning Green
Ms. Au’Janae Roberts, President of UNICEF UNT Student Chapter
Ms. Eileen Blute Vice President of the Mean Green Sailing Team
Maintenance
The trees will be maintained by UNT Grounds.
Metrics
Using the Tree Benefits calculator provided by Dr. Jeffery Rous, the economic metrics are
comprised of the overall benefits annually and property value. The pie chart below shows how
some of the environmental metrics can be broken down and be given a monetary number.
After taking the twenty five inches of data collected, the three sample species were compiled’
to create an overall average.
The social metric is measured by the number of volunteers gathered through the letters of
support. There are sixty students accounted for to attend the Arbor Day event.
The environmental metric is comprised of a spreadsheet that displays four different trees over
the growth of twenty-five inches. The trees surveyed include the Chinese Pistache, American
Elm, Red Maple and the Texas State tree, the Pecan. After tracking each tree with the
TreeBenefit.com calculator provided by Dr. Jeffery Rous, UNTrees was able to calculate the
stormwater runoff collected by the trees over the 25 inches of growth. In addition the kilowatts
conserved and the CO2 emissions sequestered were also recorded.

_________
October 9, 2014 WMGF Committee UNT Sustainability 217 North Texas Blvd #240 Denton, TX 76201 Dear Members of the We Mean Green Fund Committee,
I am pleased to provide a letter of support for the UN-Trees proposal being submitted by Mary Bielamowicz.
Mary is a former student of mine. She has a passion for improving the world that is easy to see. Throughout her time in studying with me, Mary demonstrated a keen intellect and an excitement for learning. I am pleased to learn of Mary’s UN-Trees concept, which is totally in character for her. Her plan to plant trees in our community addresses a key area of regional need. Many trees are being cut down to facilitate development in Denton, and Mary’s UN-Trees initiative can play an important role in counterbalancing these changes.
Mary is seeking help from our geography department, and I know she will find a ready group of volunteers to help with UN-Trees. But WMGF support will be invaluable in helping Mary’s vision move ahead. I urge you to fund UN-Trees and support tree planting in our community
Please feel free to follow up with me if you have any questions.
Best Regards,
Murray D. Rice, Ph.D. UNT Geography
Letter of Support [UN-Trees] October 21, 2014 WMGF Committee UNT Sustainability 217 North Texas Blvd Denton #240 Denton, TX 76201 Phone: 940-369-8304 Dear members of the We Mean Green Fund Committee, It is my pleasure to write a letter of support for the UN-Trees project proposal being submitted by Mary Bielamowicz for funding consideration by the UNT WMGF Committee. Mary’s UN-Trees project touch upon all three asepcts of sustainability. In terms of social aspect, it strengthens the student, university and Denton community by providing community members an opportunity to engage and unite. It also contributes to environmental sustainablity by adding to the urban canopy and reducing ecological footprint. Further, trees beautify the campus, increasing the attractiveness of the university to prospective students which may add to ecomomic sustainability of UNT and Denton community. As a faculty member, I commit myself to mentoring Mary throughout the proposal submittion stage and during project execution. Mary is envisioning this project to be continued even after her graduation thus I will aid her in finding the right team, getting faculty support and college-wide recognition. As a person deeply interested in sustainable development, I plan to take part in the tree-planting event next year on Arbor day and also bring student and faculty support for the event. As was recognized through UNT’s master plan and City of Denton’s urban canopy program, trees are vital for sustainable development aiding community growth, economic development and public health. With Mary’s strong leadership, vision, and dedication, I believe the UN-Trees project will bring sustainable value to the community and become an inspiration for future generation of students. Sincerely,
Jiyoung Kim, Ph.D Associate Professor Department of Merchandising and Digital Retailing College of Merchandising, Hospitality & Tourism University of North Texas

Dear members of the We Mean Green Fund Committee,
It is my pleasure to write a letter of support of the UNTrees being submitted by Mary Bielamowicz for funding consideration by the UNT WMGF Committee.
UNICEF believes in children's rights. We stand for educating the young to help them grow up and become better thinkers, better citizens and better parents when it comes time for them to have their own children . I am eager and excited to lead our UNICEF student chapter and I am happy to support UNTree's cause to suport our campus environment. Afterall, as students we are still much like children. Our minds are being molded every day in the classroom. Planting trees is an educational and sustainable act that can greatly impact the children of today. If we can teach college students to live more sustainably, we can continue to teach the generations to come. That is why, I Au' Janae promise to promote UNTrees movement towards a more sustainable campus life. I promise to bring at least seven students from UNICEF's student chapter to the Arbor Day event. Thank you for your time and thank you for being part of something bigger than yourself.
Sincerely,
Au'Janae Roberts President of UNICEF Student Chapter UNT *)A! (}/1 M;

Dear members of the We Mean Green Fund Committee, My name is Richard E Last, Sr. Director of the Global Digital Retailing Research Center at the University of North Texas College of Merchandising Hospitality, and Tourism It is my pleasure to write a letter of support of the UNTrees program to plant trees on campus, being submitted by Mary Bielamowicz, a student in our department, for funding consideration by the UNT WMGF Committee. In addition to campus beautification, this project is important as a hands-on experience for our students in sustainability and enviromental preservation In my role as faculty advisor to the NRF Student Association and Coordinator of the Digital Retailing degree program, I plan to support this effort in three ways:
1. Encourage hands-on participation in the project by our NRF student association throughthe leadership of our offficers.
2. Relate this project to retail careers in the field Corporate Social Responsibility. (The NRFSA’s mission is to promote the diverse careers available in the retail industry).

Dear members of the We Mean Green Fund Committee, It is my pleasure to write a letter of support of the UN‐Trees being submitted by Mary Bielamowicz for funding consideration by the UNT WMGF Committee. I, Kelsey Henry, founder and president of Bored in Denton have provided Ms. Bielamowicz with the opportunity to promote and bring awareness for the campus’ need for a larger and greener tree canopy. Together, we have discussed and created tree planting enthusiam among the members of BID. When a student picks a universiy, they not only pick the school for their academic focus, but also for an aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly campus. UN‐Trees will leave a legacy for the current students of UNT, but it is so much more than that. This is a chance to give back to the school we love so deeply and to the future generations of UNT students. By supporting UN‐Trees, I support a greener campus. I promise to attend the tree planting ceremony on Arbor Day, promote the event within my own club Bored in Denton, and bring at least five members of BID to the event. Thank you for your consideration. Go Mean Green! Sincerely, Kelsey Henry President and Founder of Bored in Denton

Dear members of the We Mean Green Fund Committee, It is my pleasure to write a letter of support of the UNTrees being submitted by Mary Bielamowicz for funding consideration by the UNT WMGF Committee. Just like sailing, tree planting has a long history. The Mean Green Sailing Team takes pride in the oceans, in the lakes and in the land. Participating in the UNTrees project is an opportunity to take pride in the environment. UNT’s sailing team is proud to volunteer five of its members to plant trees on Arbor Day with the student led project, UNTrees. This is a great opportunity to meet active students playing a part in UNT’s community culture and a chance to recruit more students to join the sailing team. We plan on wearing our sailing shirts proudly while directly helping UNT become the Mean Green we love and care about. Sincerely,
Eileen Blute Vice President of the Mean Green Sailing Team
