The ABCD’s of Early Detection Here’s what to watch for if you’re concerned about a mole’s evolution on your body:

Benign Mole Removal Even if a mole is harmless, we understand that some of our amazing clients would feel more confident if they could have it removed. That’s why we will still perform a non-invasive mole removal procedure for you to ensure you feel beautiful in your own skin.

Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t quite match the other.

Border: The edges of the mole are irregular; similar to asymmetry, watch for ragged borders that go beyond the parameters of a circle.

Colour: Healthy moles are one solid colour. A tell-tale sign of a potential skin cancer is discolouration/multiple colours in one mole.

Diameter: If the mole is larger than the end of a pencil’s eraser, it may be cancerous.

Varicose veins (or ‘spider veins’) are typically more common in women, but it’s important to be aware that men can still suffer from them as well. These unsightly veins often appear in the legs, and can cause varying levels of pain, throbbing and discomfort.

DIAGNOSING SPIDER VEINS

Before we can treat spider veins, we collaborate with our clients’ general physicians and assess whether there is an internal problem within the circulatory system that is causing the spider veins to occur. From there, our team decides which treatment is best. Since some of the most severe-looking spider veins are painless according to the patient, we judge each treatment on a case-by-case basis.

TREATING SPIDER VEINS

At Barry Lycka MD & Associates, we typically perform sclerotherapy on our clients suffering from spider veins.

This procedure involves hardening the spider veins so that they thicken and shut down. Sclerotherapy is performed by injecting hypertonic saline (highly concentrated salt water) into the vein, which essentially “pickles” the lining to the point that it hardens, thickens and shuts down completely.

Since hypertonic saline is a natural substance, the hardened vein is then simply absorbed by the body.

Tattoo Removal Process

At Barry Lycka MD & Associates, we use a highly specialized laser called the Medlite to permanently remove tattoos over a period of approximately six to eight treatments, six to eight weeks apart from one another.

The Medlite laser uses light energy to pass through the skin, breaking up the tattoo ink. The ink is then absorbed and flushed out using your body’s natural processes. This natural disposal of ink allows us to remove the tattoo without disrupting the surrounding skin.

6 to 8 TREATMENTS

The number of treatments may vary depending on the amount and type of ink used.

This process is not painless; it resembles the feeling of being snapped with a rubber band. We do offer topical anesthetic for the discomfort.

Dark ink—like blue, black and red—resolves very well; however, orange and purple fade eventually while green and yellow ink can take longer to resolve entirely.

We cannot guarantee complete tattoo removal, as the effectiveness of the Medlight depends on what type of ink was used originally.

SCAR CORRECTION

Types of Scars

KELOID SCARS appear when the skin produces an excessive amount of the fibrous connective tissue.

CONTRACTURE SCARS are formed after a second or third-degree burn.

HYPERTROPHIC SCARS appear when the skin produces an excessive amount of collagen, which gives volume to a raised scar.

ACNE SCARS are a direct result of acne breakouts. The skin becomes inflamed due to clogged pores with excess oils, dead skin, and bacteria. Types of acne scars include:

ICE-PICK SCARS, which are deep pits in the skin.

ROLLING SCARS, which are wide and shallow scars that give the skin a wave-like appearance.

BOXCAR SCARS, which are angular scars with sharp vertical edges.

Scar Correction Treatments At Barry Lycka MD & Associates, we offer a few treatment options for scar correction that are tailored to reduce/remove all types of scars. These treatments include:

MICRODERMABRASION which uses exfoliating crystals to rid the skin of dead skin and imperfections such as scars.

DERMAL FILLERS which are used to raise recessed acne scars by adding extra volume to affected areas.

CHEMICAL PEELS which essentially peels scars right off using naturally occurring acids to reveal healthier-looking skin.

LASER RESURFACING which uses light energy to heal the skin by removing scar tissue layer by layer.

When the skin experiences trauma, new fibrous connective tissue forms over the affected area to allow the skin to heal. This new tissue is what causes the area to have a different texture and tone than the rest of the skin.

I’ve shared plenty of pastry, dessert and healthy food recipes; this month I wanted to share a recipe that involves food, but is used for skin care! Check out this lemon lime face mask, and head to Dr. Lycka’s blog to read up on how lime benefits overall skin and body health.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

• 3-4 tbsp. coconut oil

• 1–2 freshly squeezed limes

• 1/2 freshly squeezed lemon

• 1 tbsp. brown sugar

• 2 tbsp. dry oatmeal

• Optional: 1-3 tsp. light agave nectar or maple syrup

HOW TO MAKE:• Combine ingredients in a bowl.

Optional:chill in the fridge

• Let sit for 15–20 minutes

• Once dry, the mixture will be sticky; rub sticky mixture into skin

• Rinse with warm water to reveal exfoliated, moisturized and brightened skin

Eight years ago, when my daughter was in kindergarten, a little boy in her class died from leukemia. The fact that it was a child hit very close to home for our family.

Over dinner that night, we talked about how, sadly, this little boy and his family weren't the only ones battling pediatric illnesses right now. I told my daughters that as sad as it is, we are very blessed to live in a city that has the very best doctors and nurses at the Stollery Children's Hospital working very hard to help the little ones get better.

Inspired by this, our daughters decided to set up a lemonade stand and donate their earnings to the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation in their classmate's memory to help other kids and their families.

That first year, our girls raised about $250. Since then, it has become an annual community-wide event that grows in size every year!

I'm proud to say that in eight years, we have raised over $50,000 for the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation. It warms my heart to see the excitement in the kids' eyes when they get to hand over that over-sized cheque to the foundation, knowing that their hard work is going to help so many sick children and their families.

This little boy only lived five short years, but through this fundraiser, his story has touched so many people, and that makes me very happy.

This year's lemonade stand will be held from July 10-16 from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM at the Namao Centre Sobey's (9611-167 Avenue) in Edmonton.

Beyond lemonade, we also have a variety of treats, games, 50/50 tickets and a silent auction with some pretty cool items! (WestJet even donated a return-trip for two to anywhere they fly!)

100% of all money raised at our stand goes to the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation.

Save Your Skin with Sunscreen

Sun Safety

Applying sunscreen before exposing the skin to UV rays on a sunny day is common practice for many people; however, it is also common for people to go without sunscreen on cloudy days, not realizing that clouds do not protect the skin from UV exposure.

Even when sunlight is blocked by the clouds, ultraviolet radiation still passes through to the earth. That’s why it’s imperative that you always apply sunscreen before heading outdoors whether it’s sunny or not.

Choosing the Right SunscreenSun Protection Factor (SPF) is the main measurement to keep in mind when searching for sunscreen. SPF measures UVB absorption; a higher SPF measurement means more protection against sunburn and eye damage.

Look for the words broad-spectrum and SPF 30+ to ensure your skin will be protected against UVA and UVB rays.

Sunscreen Application 1011. Apply enough sunscreen that it leaves a

film on the skin, which will be absorbed within 20 minutes.

2. Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outdoors.

3. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming and/or sweating.

4. Apply sunscreen after moisturizers but before makeup.

5. For maximum protection, apply sunscreen daily, year-round.
