    UNIPOWER

The UP-2210 is based on a powerful digital signal

processor (DSP) which makes it possible to

monitor all parameters simultaneously with high

    accuracy.

The analogue sampling system is synchronised with the

actual fundamental frequency, which ensures class A

accuracy and precision as well as accurate event

    capturing.

Each and every cycle is analysed in accordance with

IEC 61000-4-30 Class A. The UP-2210 can easily be set

up to measure in accordance with EN 50160 or any

other national or international standard, with

automatic reporting to management or other any other

    interested receiver.

    Analogue inputs

The UP-2210 has 4 differential voltage and 4 differential

voltage transient inputs. The bandwidth of each input is

adapted to the appropriate application. When measuring

harmonics a lower bandwidth is needed than when

    capturing transients.

The UP-2210 also has 4 differential current input

channels. In low voltage networks the fourth current

channel can be used to measure the neutral current.

    Ground fault application

The fourth voltage channel can be used for earth point

monitoring in order to find ground faults in impedance

    grounded networks.

    Earth leakage

The UP-2210 is automatically detecting any earth

leakage by summing the phase (and neutral) currents. If

there is a ground fault some current will flow in a

different path and the leakage is detected.

Digital Inputs and Fault RecordingThe UP-2210 can be equipped with digital inputs that

can interface with a variety of external equipment such

as kWh-meters, water meters, protective relays, circuit

breakers etc. By connecting signals from the protective

relays, the UP-2210 can work like a fault recorder,

recording all signals upon a trig signal at a digital input.

    Digital Outputs

The UP-2210 can also be equipped with digital outputs

that can be programmed to alarm when certain pre-set

conditions are met. This in turn can alert other, externalsystems. The digital outputs can be used to synchronise

other meters (or UP-2210) to record at en event.

    Power Quality Monitor (UP-2210)

    The UP-2210 is a full-featured, norm-compliant (IEC

61000-4-30 Class A) power quality monitor capable ofdetecting any disturbances encountered in a network.

It interfaces with the PQ Secure software package.

    Measure unit (UP-2210)

    Graphical display

An optional graphical display is also available. The unit

is equipped with Unipowers unique and user-friendlyTurn&Clickinterface, and can be connected to a PC(RS-232) on-site via a front panel connector.

    Measured parameters

The UP-2210 has been developed as a full-featured

power quality and transient monitor to simultaneouslymeasure all events on all channels. Individual trigger

levels can be set to enable an infinitely variable range of

user-defined trigger conditions, either from the remote

workstation or via a laptop directly connected to the

monitor. If a disturbance occurs that exceeds the

defined trigger levels the monitor will record the

    disturbance.

The internal memory has been chosen so that there are

no moving parts. Problems with hard disks are a thing

of the past. Instead, the analyser stores the events onits solid-state internal memory using a sophisticated data

compression technique so that 4 MB represents

typically 20 days storage. Remember that the key is the

automatic download to the central database.

Waveforms and power quality parameters can be viewed

in real-time with PQ Online or as historical data with the

    PQ Secure software (SQL database).

    Basic parameters and demands

All basic power quality parameters are measured

continuously and can be viewed in real-time with

PQ Online, or as historical data with PQ Secure.

    Fault Recorder Module

The UP-2210 can also be equipped with a fault recorder

module, which activates the unit's digital inputs forsupervision of the status of circuit breakers, relays and

other external equipment. Whenever there is a distur-

bance in the electrical grid the unit records voltage and

current deviations, together with information about the

    connected external equipment.

    Communication

A central feature of UP-2210 is the flexibility and ease

of communication between the workstation and the

permanently installed monitor. Communication can be

via a wire, phone connection, radio (and GSM), fibre/

wire, etc. The monitor has built-in RS-232, RS-485,

USB, Ethernet and also a modem.

    Harmonics

Harmonic distortion is caused by non-linear generators

or loads and can cause severe problems. For example, capacitor banks can easily be damaged and neutral

connectors can overheat. To identify harmonic-related

problems it is necessary to measure continuously. The

UP-2210 unit measures harmonics, both amplitude and

phase, up to the 50th harmonic. Both THD-F, THD-R

together with K-factor and harmonic power are

calculated. All harmonics calculations are in accordance

    with IEC 61000-4-30 Class A (IEC 61000-4-7 Class I).

The UP-2210 also has a module for studying

    interharmonics and signalling.

    Transients, Sags and Swells

Disturbances in a power system are defined as voltage

transients, sags or swells. Transients are fast

disturbances originating from lightning, load switching

etc. Voltage sags are short-duration low RMS-values

generally caused by faults such as short circuits in the

utility system. The reliability of a power system is

critical to most businesses and is greatly affected by sagsand swells.

The UP-2210 detects and categorises the type of

disturbance, and helps to identify the source by

determining the direction. It measures and calculates the

RMS value for each half cycle and uses precision peak

detectors to detect transients down to 1 microsecond

duration. When a transient or a sag/swell occurs the

UP-2210 records it and stores all necessary data in the

built-in memory. It is then automatically transferred to

the workstation with a seamless timebase for evaluation.Transients and sags & swell measurements are based on

    IEC 61000-4-30 Class A.

MountingThe UP-2210 is a compact and rugged unit and is

intended to be mounted permanently on site. The size is

    only 205 x 300 x 65 mm (width x height x depth) and

ideal for mounting in any switchboard. An optional

graphical display is also available for front panel

    monitoring on site and measures only 184 x 91 x 96

mm. The display unit can be mounted remotely from

the UP-2210 and is equipped with an extra front panel

RS-232 communication port to which a portable

computer easily can be connected to view real-time

    parameters on site.

UP-2210 installed in a substation cabinet

    Flicker

Fluctuating loads cause voltage variations that are often

referred to as f licker. Lamps connected to such a voltageproduce a flickering light, very annoying to the human

eye. The UP-2210 measures voltage flicker in

accordance with IEC 61000-4-30 Class A (IEC 61000-4-

    15) and calculates flicker parameters such as IFL, PST

    and PLT.

    Unbalance

Unbalance is a condition where the three phases differ

in amplitude. This unbalance is frequently expressed as

the ratio of the negative phase sequence divided by the

positive phase sequence, as a percentage. Even small

amounts of voltage unbalance decrease the efficiency of

a three-phase motor. Monitoring the unbalance can help

to improve efficiency and increase the longevity of a

    motor.

The UP-2210 measures and stores the positive-, nega-

tive- and zero-phase sequence and the unbalance for

both voltage and current in accordance with IEC

    61000-4-30 Class A.

PQ Secure, historical evaluation of PST,

    short-term flicker severity.

    Real-time and troubleshooting

Without interrupting the logging of all parameters, the

UP-2210 can show values in different real-time graphs. This makes a great tool that can be used when

troubleshooting different problems on site as well as

    remote.

When combined with the UP-2210, PQ Secure

provides the ultimate solution for comprehensive

user-friendly continuous monitoring of and remote

access to all power quality parameters.

PQ Secure is the key tool used by utilities in several

countries for the management of Power Quality in

their networks, as this is critical to many of their

    customers.

PQ Secure is equally powerful to the end user not

only to monitor the power quality they receive but

also to diagnose potential problems within their own

    installations.

Based on the internationally renowned SQL database,

PQ Secure is configured to provide a powerful yet

intuitive man-machine interface. Being a Microsoft

product it is not only a universal standard but

immediately compatible with all standard Microsoft

tools such as Office etc. This unique system can be set to automatically

evaluate to standards such as EN 50160 or any

national standard, and produce an automatic report

to a designated computer anywhere world wide.

    Power Quality

    ManagementSystem for

    Utilities and

    Industries

A central feature of PQ Secure is the flexibility and

ease of communication between the host computer

and the permanently installed monitors (UP-2210).

Communication can be via a wire, phone connection,

radio (and GSM), fibre/wire, etc. The monitor has

    built-in RS-232, RS-485, Ethernet and a modem.

Thus, using either a laptop plugged into the UP-2210

or via the remote computer, an immediate analysis

can be made of any or all parameters from a histori-

cal trend to an in-depth analysis of an event down to

1 microsecond. This information is not polled but

created simultaneously on all channels within the

    UP-2210 and accurately time-stamped.

The Advanced Digital Signal Processing within the

UP-2210 combined with the Adaptive Phase Locked

Loop (PLL) enables an accuracy of measurement that

    is unrivalled.

The Growing Importance of Power Quality

Industry and commerce is now dependent on modern

computer systems. These systems are seriously affectedby power quality problems ranging from extended powerinterruptions to very short-term events of a fewmicroseconds.Power quality problems can be created at any point inthe network and indeed the most consistent polluter isthe very computer system at the heart of the customers

business activity. In some countries Power Quality laws have been passedto guarantee a defined level of Power Quality tocustomers. If they are not met, customers get theirmoney back. In other countries there is a trend towardsthe customer being able to choose level of power qualitythey wish to purchase. Common to both is the need to

be able to demonstrate and provide accurate evidencethat the standard is either met or not. This requiresaccurate reliable cost-effective permanent monitoring.

    Power Quality Management System

To meet the requirements set by the global trends withinthe energy sector, Unipower has developed an advanced

power quality management system called PQ Secure. Bycontinuously measuring all power quality parameters incritical locations within the network, the system provides acentral window on the network and can even identify thedirection of an event. By identifying the direction the locationand hence the cause can be identified. This technique is presently being used by electricaltransmission and distribution authorities, but is also now beingadopted by other industries, particularly those with datacentres. These often contain multiple feeds, several UPSsystems and emergency generators and it is critical toidentify the potential for harm before damage is done toexpensive computer systems.

By deploying several UP-2210s at key locations, eachcommunicating with the host computer, simultaneous eventcomparisons can be made tracking the location and effectof a given event on the system. The host computerevaluates, displays and generates reports. The figure belowshows the outline for such an installation. Most customers

Overview of the PQ Secure system.

Automatic reports can be set up together with event logs.Alarm outputs can be configured to connect to a BMS if a

potentially damaging event has occurred.National or international standards can also beprogrammed, to confirm that the power system has metthe specification. The key issue here is the ability to tailorthe reporting to avoid swamping the user whilst retainingthe built-in powerful features needed for close analysis.

    PQ Secure software

The PQ Secure system provides two software packages:PQ Secure and PQ Online. PQ Online manages allcommunication with the measuring units. It is also used forconfiguration of the UP-2210 units and real-time evalua-tion of values and waveforms etc. The software will callall UP-2210 units in an installation, and download data intothe SQL database according to a preset time schedule. All measured data is stored within the SQL database andPQ Secure is the key for accessing it through advancedevaluation tools which allow the user to select betweenglobal and local event lists, historical evaluation windows, automatic report functions and much more.

do not want to routinely analyse each andevery mains cycle on each channel. Theydo require however to be able to get to thedata if circumstances dictate, but mostlywant to be able to filter the standard reports

issued by the system. Unipower hasextensively researched customersrequirements and has developed aflexible and yet easy-to-use system.

    PQ Online Software

    Communication and configuration software

The PQ Secure system is easy to use as the software is

configured with standard Windows drop-down menus.PQ Online is the software package controllingcommunication, configuration and real-time analysis. PQOnline manages the necessary link between the hostcomputer and the various UP-2210 monitors. PQ Onlinealso enables historical statistical data and waveformsrecorded since the last download to be retrieved. Thesoftware is option-based and supports different hardwareinterfaces as well as different software protocols. Theseinclude RS-232, RS-485, modem, Ethernet etc. Thus the host computer can become an oscilloscope, trenddisplay, transient analyser, power analyser, harmonic analyserand flicker analyser all in one!

    PQ Online, Configuration window

The picture above shows how easy it is to configure a PQmonitor. First you select the type of installation (for exam-

ple 4-Wire WYE). The software then presents a graphicalview and helps you step by step through the configuration.

All unit configurations are easily changed from the man-agement centre and every PQ monitor can have its ownindividual settings. It is also possible to use different com-munication equipment for the PQ monitors in the system.

    PQ Online - Real-time Values

Rather than wait for a standard reporting window to have

occurred and to then review data historically, PQ Onlinedials up and displays all measured parameters in real-time.PQ Online receives packets of data enabling the waveformof the voltage and current together with all standard powerquality parameters to be displayed.By using for example a GSM connection the engineer canthus remotely view an installation and be able to identify a

problem in advance of attending the site. This enables theengineer to bring the correct spares, and maximises thechance of fixing a problem in one hit.

PQ Online - Trend monitorPQ monitors can be remotely accessed via PQ Online. They store values for a period of time allowing the user tosee a historical trend graph when PQ Online is connectedto a UP-2210 monitor. This offers a quick and easy over-view of the most recent period and reveals any irregularvalues. The trends can also be viewed on site using theoptional display unit.

PQ Online - Oscilloscope and Phasors

PQ Online has a built-in oscilloscope feature that can displayall 8 measured channels at the same time. A phasor diagramcan also be displayed to verify connections and phase angles.

    PQ Online - Harmonics

The UP-2210 monitor measures harmonics (and inter-harmonics) up to the 50th continuously. PQ Online enablesthe voltage and current harmonics on all 8 channels to beviewed at the same time, either in bar graph or in tabularform.

    PQ Online - Power Harmonics

The UP-2210 monitors even measure and calculate thepower harmonics, and with PQ Online you will have infor-mation about the direction of the individual harmonics, whichis very useful when looking for the harmonics source.

    PQ Secure - Evaluation software

All data is stored in an open SQL database and PQ

Secure lets the user make advanced evaluations andanalyses. PQ Secure is built on three main modules. First,is the Global Event Viewer, which shows all events thatare registered in all the monitors. Second, there isPowerProfile, a graph and analysis tool that lets the userview all the different power quality parameters. Third, isthe automatic report generator that assembles data andtests it against international and other standards like theEN 50160. In the software, the meters are represented

by symbols that can be arranged on a map or schematicdrawing for a clear overview.

    Global & Local Event Viewer

The PQ Secure software has built-in global and local eventviewer windows that are developed to fit into an operationcentre. The event viewer windows show all events thathappen in the system divided into system events and powerquality events. The event viewers help the user to get early

warnings and hence a better picture of the situation in thenetwork.

    Basic and advanced historical evaluations

The function for historical graphical evaluations is calledPowerProfile and is easy to run. Choose the measuringunit that shall be evaluated by clicking on the measureunit icon and then click on the PowerProfile icon. Thenchoose a time span and view the historical data.

There are several pre-set evaluation windows that eachhandle one power quality parameter. These windows aredesigned to help the user evaluate the most important sub-

parameters for each power quality phenomena. All data from the evaluation windows can easily be printedor exported to Microsoft compatible products.

    Custom evaluation window

If the user wishes to make a detailed evaluation there isa special window called Custom that can be used. Thisenables all pre-selected power quality parameters to bedisplayed in the same window.

PQ Secure, Custom evaluation windowPQ Secure, Global Event Viewer window

The global event viewer shows all events from allmeasuring units in one window and the local event viewer

sorts out data from one unit at a time, which means thatthe user can also evaluate the measured power qualityfor one specific meter.

Multiple sites in the same window

The PQ Secure program supports several UP-2210 units

on different sites in the same diagram window. This givesa transmission authority the unique ability to comparemeasured power quality parameters at the different voltagelevels in the same network. The evaluation diagram provideskey information on one diagram and shows the spread fromdifferent voltage levels through the electrical grid. The data centre manager can see the effectiveness of UPSsystems and filters using the same technique.

    Sag/swell evaluation

Sags and swells can be viewed as events in a time graph,in a duration graph or as a RMS graph. The former showsevents plotted on a time axis with the severity (depth) onthe y-axis. The different phases are colour and symbolcoded. The duration graph shows events plotted on aduration time axis with the severity (depth), on the y-axis. Here the severity distribution of events is displayedand can be compared to standards like the CBEMA orANSI.

By clicking on the symbol for the actual event aninformation window will appear with data for the

sag/swell along with the direction information. Does thesag/swell come from upstream or downstream? Thereis also a View button. Hit this button and the RMS trendgraph will appear as shown in the picture below.

    Sag/swell RMS trend graph

The trend graph shows a 1.3 - 2.5 second RMS-trendgraph for every sag/swell that has been recorded. Thediagram is based on RMS values that are calculated everyhalf-period. If one or more voltage channels captures asag/swell event, all channels are recorded. This givesthe ability to view both voltages and currents when asag/swell occurs.

    Transient evaluation

Every time a transient is captured on one or morechannels all channels are recorded. The evaluation canthen be done with both voltage and current waveformsto see where the disturbance was created. Waveformsare typically recorded with one cycle pre-trig and 4 cycles

    post-trig.

    PQ Secure Network

With the SQL database software installed it isstraightforward to make use of the local area networkto distribute PQ Secure in an organisation. The PQSecure client software can be installed on additionalclient computers and configured to collect informationfrom the central database server via the existing

computer network. This means that several engineerscan use PQ Secure in different offices at the same time.
