Our professional development has proven impact and it is affordable. Funding by the Department for Education (DfE) means generous financial bursaries are available for your school.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) provided by the National Science Learning Network is well established; through needs analysis and DfE priorities, it focuses on an evidence base of what works and makes a difference in schools and classrooms. Our professional development is proven to make a real difference to individual teachers, schools and ultimately to children’s learning. In fact, 88% of participants reported an impact on their practice and 76% of participants reported a positive impact on their pupils. Our CPD is delivered face-to-face at venues across England; we can also offer CPD that is tailored to meet the specific needs of individuals or clusters of schools and is delivered at a time and place to suit you. The benefit of this approach is that it enables you to involve multiple teachers and make CPD more effective; this can be tailored to the specific challenges your school or region faces.

Why choose us for CPD?

92%of participants reported an impact on staff’s knowledge and skills

This academic year we will be celebrating ten years of the National Science Learning Network. Since the launch of Impact Awards in 2008, over 33,000 teachers and support staff have benefited from these bursaries. Impact Awards are available to all maintained schools; this financial support gives you access to high-quality professional development that is affordable and available locally. We aim to support teaching staff to develop teaching approaches, pedagogy and subject knowledge, and provide the best science education

available, enabling all children to achieve their full potential. Through this

approach we will all contribute towards

inspiring and developing the next generation of scientists, engineers and technicians, and ensuring we have a well informed and scientifically capable society.

As the UK’s largest provider of subject-specific CPD, the National Science Learning Network (formerly the national network of Science Learning Centres) comprises of the National Science Learning Centre in York, and a wider network of 50 Science Learning Partnerships across England. This network continues to grow and provides a range and depth of support that is unique, with proven impacts on teaching and learning, young people’s engagement and staff retention.

The National Science Learning Centre in York provides participants with residential CPD experiences and offers an extensive range of professional development. ENTHUSE Award bursaries are available to teachers and teaching assistants at state funded schools and academies. To find out more please visit: www.slcs.ac.uk/national

Through the wider network we are able to offer a flexible approach to CPD. Our venues are strategically located throughout England and provide the highest standards in CPD and tailored local support. Our professional development programme reflects current issues in science education and can be mapped to national standards. Our courses are grouped into four themes:

Subject and curriculum knowledge

Leadership and management

Effective teaching and learning in science

Accurate and effective use of assessment

The CPD in each theme uses appropriate teaching and learning strategies, modelling good practice such as innovative technologies and inspiring contemporary science contexts. A range of delivery models are available including face-to-face sessions of varying

length alongside online support. In addition all our courses can be requested as a bespoke offer for your school or network. More information on individual courses, including scheduled dates and venues, can be found on our website: www.slcs.ac.uk/CPD

We welcome the opportunity to discuss your individual requirements. For details of your local network please visit: www.slcs.ac.uk/net/network

Science Teacher and Support Staff Recognition Scheme

This free scheme is designed to help you demonstrate your commitment to professional learning and the impact this has on children, colleagues and the wider profession. It will also support teachers in England in providing evidence against the Teacher Professional Standards. Entries can be made at any time of year by teachers and science support staff working in any UK school, teaching children aged 4 to 19.

To enter simply complete an entry form and supply evidence to support your entry. For more information, an entry form and to see who has already been successful, visit: www.slcs.ac.uk/recognise

Supporting you in the South West region

The South West region covers the South West and southern parts of England, covering Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in the West, across to Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and up to Oxfordshire and across to Gloucestershire.

Within this region we operate a network of Science Learning Partnerships with each region allocated a lead partner. A map detailing the lead partners and the region they lead is on page 04.

Last academic year (13/14) the Science Learning Partnerships in the South West delivered over 1,000 days of CPD for teachers and technicians, and many of these participants were supported by funding from the Department for Education by successfully claiming their impact award to recover 50% of the costs of the course fees.

Our aim for the 14/15 year is to increase the number of teachers and technicians accessing these courses, by making them more local, and to continue to offer support funding.

We have undertaken a number of projects that support schools and help them address a range of issues. Here is what they have to say about our support.

Helping you implement the latest science curriculum (RP104)

“Taking part in this school-wide project has been an incredibly positive experience for all involved. The focus on science has been re-established and the staff re-invigorated and excited about delivering their science next year. All staff feel significantly more confident in planning and teaching the working scientifically element of the curriculum since taking part in the project.”

How we have supported schools in the South West

“I have learnt that the children love science and that I can teach it in a fun and exciting way to improve attainment.” “I will always now think about the best starter or way to approach every learning experience, so as to hook the children but also maximise their independent child-led learning.”

Been inspired? Apply for a Rolls-Royce Science Prize

This annual awards programme helps teachers implement science teaching ideas in their school. The Prize recognises and rewards excellence in science teaching across the full spectrum of teaching, from special education needs to high ability pupils. It also promotes innovative and sustainable strategies for teaching science which addresses a specific need and at the same time contributes to teachers’ professional development.

There is a total of £120,000 in prizes to be won each year and by taking part in our CPD you are eligible to apply. For more details please visit: www.rolls-royce.com/scienceprize

This award is given to schools that have shown significant use of the context of space in STEM subjects, have worked with other organisations, shared resources and used space to enrich the curriculum.

The benefits of taking part:

wgain recognition for your achievements

wraise the profile of quality science teaching within the school

winspire children to take STEM subjects

wencourage further engagement with parents, other schools and the wider community

waccess to professional development
