That meant I had a lot of preparation to do before I could get this carpet installed. The first thing I had to do is get everything out of the 2 rooms. That doesn’t seem like such a big deal until you start to look around and see what you have accumulated over the last 20 years. I started with boxing up all the knick knacks that I had on book shelves. You know the stuff that you have collected over the last 20 years. My cup and saucer collection, things the kids made in grade school, book that you use to read to the kids at night, souvenirs from our trip to Italy and Korea, and lots of other trinkets that we put out for different holidays. Then I started to go around the room to my china cabinet and wrap up the fine collector plates and glass ware that I have, because I don’t want any of it to get broke. Then I have to clean off the desk, because that and the dining room table are a great place to place stuff that needs to be done. So we through that in boxes too. Then we are down to the big stuff. The couch, desk, loveseat, table, chairs, piano, computer table, and china cabinet. After 3 days we are ready to take out the old carpet and replace it with the new. When they came on Monday morning we had all the furniture in the Kitchen. We were so crowded that we couldn’t get to the stove to cook, we couldn’t get in the cupboards to get any food, and we couldn’t even get to the refrigerator for anything I had placed all these things in my kitchen, but I had put them in front of what was really important. I need food! Sometimes we do the same thing with God. We put everything in front of what he wants us to do and we wonder why God is not meeting our needs. . This reminded me of the bible verse Matthew 6:33, But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. We need to be fed by God first! Well, I didn’t starve and neither did Larry. Later that night we were able to get the large pieces of furniture back so we could get to the refrigerator, stove and cupboards. But, before I put any of the boxes back on the shelves or in the room I went through it to see if I really needed it. This is what we need to do in our daily walk. We need to take some time and be cleansed from this clutter that is keeping you from God’s work. Hebrews 10:22 says: let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Is it time to do some house cleaning in your life today? When I got rid of the clutter, I was released from the burden that kept me from God. It was like being washed with “pure water”. FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT Dear CREDO Community,

We have been blessed with some new carpet in my living room and dining room this spring.

FROM THE SPIRITUAL DIRECTORS

May 6th 2014

But a Samaritan, while traveling, came near him, and

Was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds,

Having poured oil and wine on them. –Luke 10:34

Dear Friend –

Ever look down on an addicted person? Hear this.

There was a crowd gathering across from our parsonage there in Gary, Indiana, and police were there too. Our neighbor Charley had gotten drunk, had a gun, and was dangerous. Finally everyone backed off. I was alone with Charley. He handed me his gun. I told him we were going for a ride – to an inpatient alcohol treatment program.

When we got to the end of 13th Avenue my little Toyota got stuck in the snow. Charley hopped out, pushed with all his might, and got the car unstuck.

Wait – I was supposed to be the helper! But in an instant I needed help.

It was powerful – helper and helpee can change places in a moment.

So – help, appropriately. And open – to be helped. Noone’s up, and noone’s down – we are believers working together.

-God loves you and so do I –

Getting to know your BOARD of OFFICERS

And BOARD of DIRECTORS This month we are featuring one of the changes to the Board of Directors.

Our Treasurer, Edward Johnson, has stepped down from the Board of Officers after accepting the appointment to the position of Executive

Director.

Edward Johnson WHAT MAKES A SERVANT LIKE YOU?

Your name, church, city and family: Edward Johnson Street Corner Deliverance Church, Rockford IL. 2 Daughter’s

What was your first paying job, and what did you learn from it? My very first paying job was a dish washer in a small restaurant located on the south side of Chicago. What I learned from this job is attention to detail. There was a specific way to do everything done in the kitchen. Everything had a place and everything in it’s place.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I had a desire to be in the military, preferably a pilot.

How did that turn out for you? After 4 years of high school ROTC I thought that I was ready. Vietnam war was at it’s height. I tried to enlist, but my parents would not allow it. I ended getting married and started a family instead. At the age of 26 I enlisted in the Air Force.

Page 4: UPCOMING EVENTScredorecoveryil.org/wp-content/Documents/Newsletters/BrokenChains-201405.pdfIllinois CREDO Recovery . BROKEN CHAINS NEWSLETTER Breaking the chains of addiction one day

If you had $10,000 gift card for travel, where would you go and what would you do there? Zaragoza, Spain. My youngest daughter lives there and I would like to spend as much time as possible there.

What would be the dead-bang bottom of your list of places to travel? Travel back to my birthplace, Yazoo, Mississippi. Reason being is that there is very little family left there. What has surprised you lately? Advancing Technology. If you had one chance for a “do over,” what would it be? If I could do something over, it would be not leaving the Air Force after 10 years. I wish that I had done 20 years then retired. Prettiest place you’ve ever seen? Okinawa Japan. What was the best thing your parents taught you? Being the oldest of 4 boys, I was taught not only to be responsible for us all, but to also at times cook and ensure that all was safe when they were working. What one thing did they do that you have sworn to never do? (Amusing, not abusing). Get divorced. Name one item from your bucket list. Physically reunite with my step- sisters. Favorite genre of music. Jazz and Blues. Hidden talent? Guitar

Special Announcement GREETING FRIENDS OF CREDO:

Friday August 8th is our next Fundraiser Banquet. PLEASE SAVE THE DATE!

We have seen a sharp decline of donations the last two years. So this year we are going to try some new things to generate the necessary income to support the Credo Ministry.

We will be holding a silent auction as we have in the past, but this year we are adding a second and completely separate online auction. Our hope is to gain financial support from people who may not live in the Rockford area, however everyone will be invited to check it out and bid as they feel moved. The online bidding will close on the day of the fundraiser at a “to be determined” time.

This year we also hope to have most of the silent auction pieces DONATED. For those who donate items, THANK YOU! Any items to be used for the online auction must be donated June first to allow time for web placement and advertising.

THE PURPOSE OF THE BANQUET IS TO RAISE FUNDS. Therefore we have made another change. The auction will be open for approximately two hours, but will close before the program begins. We feel that will help people to know if they have been successful bidders at the auction, that will help them to more clearly assess how much they feel they can place in the donation envelopes at their table.

Credo is deeply grateful for those of you who purchase tables and invite your friends to attend, but please inform your guests that the primary reason for the event is to support the ministry, not to enjoy a free meal. The donation envelope at each table is vital for the survival of the Ministry.

Finally, for our brothers and sisters who have gone through the Credo Weekend, please REMEMBER SOMEBODY PAID YOUR WEEKEND. NOW YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HELP PAY FOR SOMEONE ELSE. WHAT A BLESSING!

John Grotjohn, CEO

If you can’t help physically, please keep the fundraiser and its committee in your prayers. Thank you. Meetings are at Freedom Through The Word Church -2115 S. Alpine Road Rockford, IL. Call Tania for date and times at 815-566-0633 or [email protected] God bless, Tania Nicholson <)))><

ILLINOIS CREDO RECOVERY NEWS

**** Credo Recovery: What is it? Where did it come from? What does it do?*** This is a condensed version of “What Is Credo Recovery?” May this be of help when someone asks What is Credo recovery? Credo Recovery (CR) is a dynamic FOURTH DAY COMMUNITY established from the Cursillo and Kairos Model. It is designed to help men and women who desire recovery from addiction through the indwelling power of Jesus Christ. Credo is a highly structured community-building method centered upon a team approach beginning with a Three Day Weekend Retreat. The Weekend retreat is preceded by an intensive Pre Weekend Team Formation, and followed by weekly instruction and prayer and share accountability. Credo Recovery (CR) is delivered in camps, retreat centers, rescue missions, or Adult Rehabilitation Centers like those at the Salvation Army. Each Weekend Retreat begins by forming a team of lay-men or women and spiritual directors who meet together for approximately 30 hours of spiritual team formation before engaging the new participants in a 3 Day event, usually conducted on a weekend. The 3 day Weekend is followed with weekly instruction and accountability. Where Did Credo Recovery Come From? Credo Recovery has a rich history. Today there are currently 80 or more Fourth Day Movements that sprang from a small seed planted and nurtured in Spain by young men from Catholic Action. These men had a passion to bring spiritual renewal to their country after the devastation of the Spanish Civil War. During the decade of the 1940’s, the fruit of their prayer, planning and pilgrimage became evident in a movement, which came to be known as Cursillo de Cristiandad, (A Short Course in Christianity). From that beginning, the Cursillo and its offshoots began to grow taking its unique method for renewal to nearly every country in the world. Although it is impossible to know the number of people who have participated in this world wide movement, some estimate that during the past six decades as many as 45 million people have experienced some form of the Cursillo.

Today every mainline Protestant denomination has copied the content and structure of the Cursillo method. The first American Cursillo began in the 1950’s in Texas. Not long after that, the Methodist Church adopted the Cursillo Method and developed a worldwide movement called Walk to Emmaus. The Lutherans have done the same, under the name Via de Cristo. The Presbyterians call their movement The Great Banquet. Tres Dias is an ecumenical adaptation of the same movement. Kairos Prison Ministries International was established in the mid 1970’s designed for men and women who are incarcerated.

Today Kairos serves the residents in over 300 prisons in 33 states and nine countries. Alas, we come to Credo Recovery the newest of the Fourth Day Communities. Credo Recovery serves men and women who want to recover from the vice-grip of addiction. Credo began in New Jersey in the mid 1990’s and is currently established in Illinois and five east coast states, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

What Does Credo Recovery Do? Credo Recover, like the other flourishing Fourth Day Communities is based upon the teachings of Jesus from the New Testament. Credo focuses on seeking intimate friendship with God in order to break unhealthy attachments and addictions. Credo’s goals method and structure is adopted and adapted from the original Cursillo Method and works very much like all the other Fourth Day Communities which were formed from the Cursillo Method. Our goals are designed to offer redemption, teach spiritual disciplines, help establish personal devotion to God through Jesus Christ and encourage love of self and others through Christian Community.

WEEKLY MEDITATIONS National Association for Christian Recovery

By Dale and Juanita Ryan If you wish to read daily recovery meditations copy and paste this address in your browser. Please let CREDO Information Director know if this was beneficial to you.

hhtp://www.nacr.org/nacr-daily-meditation

The following is an excerpt from a daily devotion By our past Executive Director

John Grotjohn One of the more popular songs among Christians is the song Amazing Grace. What is grace. Grace is the unmerited

favor of God for all of us. Paul tells us in Romans 6 that "the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in

Christ Jesus our Lord." That is His grace. We don't deserve it but God gives it to us anyway. It is God's free gift for us. We can't buy it, we can't work for it, we can't do anything to acquire grace. All we can do is receive it.

Grace covers a pretty broad spectrum of how God interacts with His people. It could cover forgiveness issues so that we can put our past behind us. God's grace is showing His compassion for people who have special needs or are in trouble in need of assistance. Grace covers repentance and restoration so that lives can be changed. Repentance is turning away from sin and restoration is the result of it to be able to wipe out the past and start all over again. We serve a God of second chances. People in recovery understand this very well. Many times even though our intentions are good, the temptation will always be there so honest restoration and reliance on God is absolutely crucial in the life of a Christian addict. And of course there is the biggest show of grace and mercy of all. It is our salvation and Jesus' work on the cross. Paul teaches us in Ephesians 2:8, "For by grace are you saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves." The object of grace is to take what Jesus gave to us and pass it on to others. We are called to reach out to others in need of salvation and follow Jesus' example of ministering to the downtrodden.

Permit me to give you an example of that calling, it's a grace story. I was serving on a Tres Dias weekend in April, 2014 in the chapel. For those of you who don't know what Tres Dias is, it is a three day Christian retreat that takes Christians through a short course in Christianity and send them back to their churches as Christian leaders. Working in the chapel's responsibilities are to set up and tear down the chapel for various activities. Also it is our job to pray for the team and participants for any necessary needs requested by anyone participating. One day right in the middle of the Grace talk, a man walks into our chapel who was not part of the retreat asking for prayer. I don't know how he found us because the retreat center is hidden pretty well and can not be seen from the highway. He was asking for prayer because he was a long way from home and was having trouble with his car. He then asked if we could give him enough money to get his car fixed. We were prepared for the request and told him that we could not give him money but we would do what we could to help fix his car. As it was we had a last minute replacement in the chapel with a person who was a auto mechanic. He looked at the car and found out that the man was driving on brakes that was metal to metal. If he would have gone out on the highway with that car, chances are pretty good that he could hurt himself or somebody else. So one of the utility persons called a auto parts store to find out what it would cost for rotors and brakes for that vehicle and went out and purchased it. We fixed his brakes and sent him on his way with the message that it was our hope that one day that he would pay it forward when he had the resources to help out somebody else in need. But there is more. At our team meeting that night, we passed the hat to see if we could generate the money for the parts that our utility person spent for that car. Now nobody knew what the parts cost. When we collected the money for the parts, it came to $130.00. When we saw the receipt, it read $129.58. And as Paul Harvey would say, that is the rest of the story. Or is it? In Matthew 25:45, Jesus said “Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me." If we had turned this man away, on judgment day we may have to ask Jesus when did we see you and did not help you? And He might say, remember that day when I stopped by at the retreat center with car trouble? We were able to pass the grace on and we all felt blessed for it. When a stranger shows up out of the blue looking for help, you may never know who he is or if it is a test from the Lord. God doesn't grade tests on a curve. It's either pass/fail. Think about it and pass it on.

PRAYER

Father, we want to give you praise for the grace that you bestow on us on an everyday basis. Father we know that even though we do not deserve it, we also know that through Your gracious love for us that you do provide for our needs and it is only through Your mercy that we can depend on You for all of eternity. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Prayers – Palanca – Agape Hi everyone! Hope you are having a great “Mayday!” S.A.S!!! Save all sinners Lord! What are you doing, right now, to help save a lost sinner? Prayer is always a great weapon against the enemy! Please keep praying, as the Holy Spirit leads you, (pray for the things that are breaking the Lord’s heart and your heart) for this great nation and her leaders. Lord, we pray for world peace, especially in the Middle East and in the Ukraine, and protection for Israel. Tom S. Do you have a prayer concern? You can voice that prayer to the credo community and at the same time reach other communities with that prayer concern.
