ISM-KC Members, Thank you for being a member of ISM-Kansas City. It is with great honor, excitement, and humility that I accept the position as your president for the 2008-2009 year. Congratulations and a sincere heartfelt “thank you” to John Libel, C.P.M. for his very successful year. We are already building upon the momentum that John created this past year in efforts of continuing to better serve our members. Within the next week you will receive a survey, via CVENT, requesting your input on Educational Meeting topics for this current business year so that we can better meet your area(s) of interest and career development needs. Your response is vital to successful Educational Meetings, so please take the few minutes required to complete and submit the survey. We are committed to continuing improvements with member communications, quality, validity and value of programs and education opportunities, growing our membership both new membership as well as participatory membership and marketing ISM-Kansas City, Inc. within our business communities, in addition to expanding our knowledge within supplier diversity. The May 2008 Educational Event was devoted to recognizing members who volunteered in a variety of ways to make the 2007-2008 year a successful one; we also recognized and expressed our gratitude to the past presidents for their leadership and help in getting ISM-KC to where we are today. As you notice all the photos captured from that event included in this newsletter…we had many volunteers…but don’t be mistaken – we can ALWAYS use more!! There is a multitude of volunteering opportunities available; ranging from helping out at the registration table for the Educational Meetings, assisting on a project, serving on a short term sub committee, serving on a permanent committee, or even serving on the board. Being a not-for-profit organization, we must tap into our internal resources for talent – and I am confident we have a lot of talent to pull from within our membership base. Therefore, I ask you…What is your talent? What are you passionate about? What are your strengths that can help achieve ISM-KC’s goals? What are your “opportunities” that ISM-KC can help you build upon? Are you getting what you need – what you expect from this organization…at the local level? I welcome your input on where our organization should move as we implement new changes and formats during this new business year. Your ideas and thoughts are important to providing programs and event which meet your needs. So, please contact me at [email protected] with your input. Congratulations to the 2008-2009 Officers and Directors, they were sworn into office at the May Educational Event. Please take a moment to review who your Board of Directors and Executive Officers are this year. If you are interested in helping make ISM-KC the best it can be…if you are interested in volunteering opportunities please feel free to contact myself – or any of us serving on the Board. I look forward to serving you as President of ISM-KC for the 2008-2009 year and continued volunteer opportunities thereafter. Through the hard work and dedication of the Scholarship Committee, the guidelines of the ISM-Kansas City Shannon Scholarship program were defined and presented to the Board last year upon which were voted on and approved by the Board. The Scholarship Committee then advertised the program, received and reviewed applications for the scholarship. Congratulations to the two ISM-Kansas City Shannon Scholarship recipients: Robert Lee Eddy who is a student member of ISM-KC and attends the Missouri University of Science & Technology; and Christine Salisbury, the niece of JoAnn Harper - a member and Past President of ISM-KC, Christine is attending Kansas State University. Both students were awarded $1,000.00 scholarships at the May Educational Event. A special thanks to the Scholarship Committee for getting this program active again.

ISM’s CPSM PILOT Exam Registration -- NAPM Kansas city

TESTING TIPS Has it been a while since you’ve had to study and take a test or are you one of those who feel you aren’t a good test taker? We hope to take the anxiety out of study and test taking by giving you some helpful hints and strategies you’ll be able to use not only on the CPSM but throughout your entire education. “Preparation is the key to Success”. STUDY TIPS

• Review all study material more than once • Study a little every day, don’t cram • Answer practice questions or sample test • If you have a study partner summarize orally what you have read or review out loud the key points • Predict possible questions • Focus on bolded or italicized words. These terms can be key points. • Focus on headings and subheadings. They can help you organize.

TEST TAKING TIPS

• Read the directions. Never assume you know what the directions say. • Review the test before starting. This will give you ideas on budgeting your time. • Answering the easiest questions first can be a time saver. It will allow you more time for the questions

that are more difficult. • Calculate how much time you should allow for each question and watch your time carefully. • Highlight key words in a question. This will help you focus on the central point. • Express difficult questions in your own words. • On multiple choice questions you should:

- Read over all the options - Start with a process of elimination. Cross out the answers that couldn’t be correct and then focus on correct choices. - Sometimes lengthy or very specific answers will be correct. - Be cautious about words like “always, “never”, “only”. These are extreme words and will more then likely be the wrong answer. Because the statement must be 100 percent correct. - Review questions that have negatives (“not”, or “least”) or double negatives, these should be read carefully.

Notes: CPSM specific tips:

• Know how to get to the testing site (have a Map quest map available before you leave home), planning to arrive 15 – 20 minutes early

• You are tested on the Study materials, not what you do every day at work. • There are far more lengthy application types questions that require more time and thought than

appeared on the CPM exam. Pace yourself, Mods I & 2 have 165 questions and you have 165 minutes (2 hrs, 45 minutes) to complete. Mod 3 and the Bridge exam have 180 questions and you have 180 minutes (3 hours) to complete these. Basically, you have 1 minute per question. Check how many questions you have answered after 30, 60, 120 minutes and adjust your pace as required if you are behind.

• There are 5 types of questions - Closed-Stem Type - Sentence Completion Item - EXCEPT Format - MOST/LEAST/BEST Format - Master List Format
