Not really. There are days that I barely even think about God. I do think about God when I’m called on to pray or when I offer a prayer for someone. But I have noticed that if I’m not intentional about focusing on God, a day and even a week will go by and God is pushed to the margins and is far from being a priority in my life. I have even prepared sermons and focused too much on the content and delivery and not enough on who I am talking about and spent too little time talking to the one I’m going to talk about. It would help, don’t you think, if I spent more time focusing on God? I visited with one of our members who is at Self Nursing Home this last week. As he talked, I felt like I was in the presence of God. I asked him what was the best thing that happened to him in his life. He said, making Jesus the leader of his life. Then he talked about some of the ways that God has been with him during his 87 years. He apologized for boring me when I started to leave but no apology was necessary. I left for my next visit feeling like he had helped his pastor and preacher focus on God. When was the last time I did that for someone, I thought? Perhaps you think I’m being too hard on myself. I think this series about spiritual disciplines may be more for me than you. I need to place my life before God, so he may do His work within me. I need to focus Upward, Inward, and Outward. I feel hollow inside and superficial and I desire to have a deeper life. I know I need to change and be changed and I just haven’t been able to do it. So, I’m starting to long for God/ “As the deer pants for steams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42:1-2) How about right now and right here?
