Sudlersville Elementary School Students are Ready for the New School Year! The students in grades one through four have returned to school and show enthusiasm about learning. "Children were excited and ready to start the new year," said Mrs. Annette DiMaggio, PTA President.

"Many have set goals for acquiring good grades and have gotten the opportunity to make new friends," said Mrs. Michele Hampton, principal. Teachers are getting to know their classes and are completing assessments in order to better understand their new students' strengths and needs. Teachers are also interested in how each child thinks and learns best."The SES staff is encouraging partnerships with parents as an effective strategy to build success for all students. If we can practice effective communication and value the time spent on this, then the outcomes for all children will improve. There are forty years of research to prove this," said Mrs. Michele Hampton, principal.

Children Who Feel EntitledBy:  Michele HamptonMany times parents ask me how to deal with their child's anger or temper tantrums. I wish I had all of the answers, but I have seen responses to temper tantrums that really do work. Children do have some entitlements such as adequate food and shelter, warmth, mental and emotional health, intellectual challenges, education, fun, play, reasonable choices, creative endeavors, emotional and physical protection, love, sufficient clothing, fair treatment, and good relationships. I am sure that parents would agree that children are not entitled to have all their wants indulged unconditionally. This should be appropriate to their age and maturity. Children don't usually fare well in the short or long term if all their wishes are magically granted. So when a child makes a request for something that she want, parents have four options:*Say "yes." Do so if you deem the activity or object to be appropriate and beyond the child's ability to acquire on his/her own.*Tell him/her that you will not provide whatever it is that he's wanting, but that he can find a way on his own to acquire it.*Teach him how to acquire it. Help the child save allowances by setting up a savings account at the bank. He/she can also do extra household chores.*Say "no." Explain why it's inappropriate. Or tell him/her that you will help him acquire it when he/she is older.Stay with her/him if she/he goes into a tirade. To deny a child something he/she feels entitled is painful, but in the long run the child learns to wait for gratification and to make plans to reach a goal.http://parentinvolvementmatters.org/articles/resisting

Art at Sudlersville Elementary SchoolSudlersville Elementary's first grade art students are learning about line, one of the most basic elements of art. Students are learning about line direction. By using their bodies to create lines, they are reinforcing the material learned in a new way. They used their bodies to make horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines. Mrs. Hosler, art teacher, is seen demonstrating line direction. These connections help students learn where lines and art can be found all around them every day.

PARENTS/GUARDIANS Rights Providing our children with an environment where students receive a quality education is more than just a goal for the Queen Anne‘s County Public School System; it is vital to the way we do business. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2002, gives parents the right to ask for and receive information about the professional qualifications of their child‘s teacher, including:•Any college or university degrees or certifications held by the teacher;•The subject area of the teacher‘s degree on certification;•Whether the teacher is certified by the State of Maryland to teach a particular grade level or subject area;•Whether the teacher holds a conditional certificate; and•Whether your child is served by paraprofessionals and, if so, the qualifications of the paraprofessional. If you would like to receive any such information about your child‘s classroom teacher, please make the request in writing to your school‘s principal. The principal will then provide the information to you in a timely manner; in most cases within 30 business days.

Wow! It is hard to believe that September is already over! The children are doing a wonderful job learning how to follow classroom rules and routines. We have been reading a lot of books about feelings, sharing and going to school. In addition, we have been learning about colors, shapes, and letters found in their name. Please help your child identify and understand that colors, numbers, and letters can be found anywhere. This month we will be learning about letters and nursery rhymes. Please have your child select a nursery rhyme and help them practice the rhyme each day. We will be celebrating Nursery Rhyme Day on Monday, October 28th. Pre-K will be taking a trip to Pizza Hut on Tuesday, October 29th. This trip is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about their community and community helpers. Parent Conferences for Pre-K are scheduled for Wednesday, October 30th, Thursday, October 31st, and Friday, November 1st. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet, and learn the progress your child is making in Pre-K. I look forward to meeting with all of you at conference time. If you have any questions please feel free to call me. Thanks again for your continued support! The Pre-K Team

Kindergarten will be going on a field trip to the Wicked R Ranch on Wednesday, October 30th. Permission slips are due by October 14. Remember that you must be an approved volunteer if you would like to help chaperone this trip. All information, including volunteer applications, was sent home on September 18. If you need another copy, please contact your child's teacher. If there is a fog delay or bad weather, the date of the trip will be re-scheduled. We are looking forward to a great experience at the Wicked R Ranch!Thank you, The Kindergarten Team

We are "fall"ing right into step in first grade. Literacy block has begun and the students seem very excited about it. We are working hard on phonics skills, vocabulary along with comprehension. Please make sure you are reading at home and completing the reading logs each week. The more your child reads, the better reader they will become. In math we are continuing to focus on addition. Our science unit on living things and their habitats has been very interesting to the children. We will continue learning about how living things change and grow. As you know our field trip to the Philadelphia zoo is fast approaching. We will travel on Tuesday, October 15. Any parent that plans to attend as a chaperone MUST have completed the volunteer forms and attended one of the training sessions. In the case of a fog delay, we will leave SES at 9:30 rather than 8:15. Volunteers in the classroom are always welcome. Please let us know if you can help out either at school or at home. Please make sure to return your forms regarding parent conferences. We are eager to meet with each of you to discuss your child's progress. Thank you for your continued support. First Grade Team

Outstanding October

Happy fall! The students have acclimated well to the routines of third grade! Please continue to remind your child to read, read, read as well as write a solid opinion paragraph for their weekly reading homework. This takes the place of the “literacy block” reading log that was assigned last year. There are plenty of books that can be purchased at the book fair which will occur the week of October 7th, 2013 in the Media center. We hope to see you at the “fall into Reading and Math” night on Thursday, October 15th, 2013! This will be a fun filled evening to celebrate the season as well as the two important academic areas of Reading and Math. Soon, you will receive a parent conference slip in your child’s folder. Please fill out and send back as soon as possible so all conferences can be scheduled promptly. Please feel free to contact us anytime and thank you for your continued support.

The Fall weather is upon us. It has been cool and comfortable at recess. As the weather starts getting colder please remember to send your child to school with a jacket. Literacy Block started Monday September 19th. Ask your child about what he/she is reading in class. They are working hard on improving reading and writing skills. We have begun Unit 3 and will be moving into our Multiplication Unit shortly. Fourth grade will spend a large portion of our Math time working on improving multiplication fluency. Please practice this skill with your child daily. NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.Sudlersville Elementary will be celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month with a special school wide celebration October 11th. Students will be exploring the history, culture and contributions of citizens who ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and South America. Our students will be given the opportunity to discover the contributions and rich cultures of Hispanics in the United States. Community members will be providing the staff with a taste of Hispanic cuisine. We are excited about the upcoming events and look forward to celebrating and learning about the Hispanic Culture.

Reading is Fun!It is very important to read with children from a very young age. Putting a few simple strategies into action will make a significant difference in helping children develop into good readers and writers. Through reading aloud, providing books, and promoting positive attitudes about reading and writing, you can have a powerful impact on children's literacy and learning. * Invite your child to read with you everyday. * When reading a book where the print is large, point word by word as you read. * Read a child's favorite book over and over again. * Read many stories with rhyming words and lines that repeat. Invite your child to join in on these parts. * Discuss new, unfamiliar words. * Stop and ask about the pictures and about what is happening in the story. * Read from a variety of children's books, including fairy tales, song books, poems, and informational books.Reading well is at the heart of all learning. Children who can't read well, have difficulty learning. You can help make a difference for your child. We appreciate your support!Have fun reading!!
