From Times PastA look back at some past IARC newsletters

By original editor Edwin Fensch W8SOU & current editor Jay Bookwalter KC8GNL

And now including highlights from past meeting minutes dating back to 1944!!

This month we look at the minutes of IRC meetings from February thru April 1949. I have to laugh at the comments the secretary makes about the coffee after the meetings!

The President during 1949 was Anton Miller W8WPF, - Vice Pres. John Armstrong W8YCV, and Sec/Treas. - Jack Barr W8VTP

Note: the spelling and wording are as they were written in the actual minutes thus the “” marks.

February 4, 1949

“The meeting was called to order by the President W8WPF. The minutes and treasurer's report of the last meeting were read and approved. Bulletons # 172-174-175 were read. A report on the progress of plans for the QSO party was given by the chairman and members of the committee. Part of a letter from OCARC was read and two delegates to attend the next meeting were appointed. The delegates are Egon Loeckel W8TAJ, and Jake Erndt W8PIH. The Secy. Was instructed to write to ARRL for enough copies of operating aids numbers five and six for the licensed members of the club. Now that we got them I hope you guys take them and use them.The door prizes were then awarded to the following, Bill Shurance, Ernie Hogue, Harley Hershner, Ed Harry, and Chas. Bookwalter.The meeting was then turned over to Jake Erndt who gave a very interesting talk on traffic nets and message handling. Al Biddle vollunteered to give a talk at the April meeting on 25 years in radio. The meeting was the then adjourned and a rag chew was enjoyed over coffee (varnish remover) and doughnuts.”Signed by Jack E Barr W8VTP

“The meeting was called to order after a slight delay due to late comers. There was a short business meeting, the reading of the ARRL bulletins # 176-177-178-179 and the roll call. There were quite a few strange faces in the gang. This was due to the QSO party. The meeting was turned over to Chas. Bookwalter, chairman of the committee for the party. He gave a welcome speech to the members and stranger. The meeting was then turned over to Egon Loeckel who introduced the two guest speakers, Doc Strickler SCM and D.E.Cartwright EC. Mr Cartwright gave a very interesting talk on ARRL and emergency work and equipment. Also he gave local set-up of emergency net works. Door prizes were then Drawen, the main prize a Micro-match was won by Bart Geib W8WE of Findley Ohio. There were twenty-eight prizes in all. Everyone then joined the chow-line and a rag chew was onjoyed by everybody over a very excellent lunch of weiners, baked beans (prepared by Mrs. Garns) potatoe salade, and ice cream and cake. The lunch was under the guidence of Adam Holtzmiller, who must have taken lessons in coffee making since the Feb. meeting. For the records I want to take this oppertunity to thank everyone who helped make this to make this party a success. This includes the committee members and those who donated prizes.”Signed by Jack E Barr W8VTP

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~There is a wealth of history to review for quite some time which leads me to once again put out that our club needs a historian to help keep track of the old minutes, newsletters, & photos.Not a hard job but one that needs to put things in order. Such as the photo following this article. It was found in a box of old paperwork that was almost tossed out from the Red Cross
ARRL SECTION MANAGER ELECTION RESULTS
Incumbent Ohio Section Manager Frank Piper, KI8GW, of Pickerington, was re-elected to a new full two-year term of office with 978 votes. His opponent, Thomas Sly, WB8LCD, of Kent, garnered 887 votes. Piper was appointed by ARRL in July 2009, to fulfill the term of office left vacant after then-Section Manager Joe Phillips, K8QOE, passed away.
From the Section Manager's Desk
Well, the Section Manager election is over, and I’m sitting here thinking about what I should say. This is the first election I have ever run for. To say it takes a lot out of you is an understatement.
The ballots, which had to be mailed in and received prior to 4:00pm on Friday, August 20, were counted on Tuesday, August 24. I received the call from ARRL HQ in Newington, Ct. courtesy of Steve Ewald, WV1X. I was told the total was 978 votes for me, and 887 votes for my opponent, Mr. Tom Sly WB8LCD of Kent, OH.
I am a person who always looks at “The Big Picture”, and deeper into statements than most people do (this is a trait that drove my Parents mad, and sometimes has me sleeping on the couch…) While I am happy that the 978 votes for me were cast, and let me thank those whodid vote for me, I cannot look away from the 887 votes that went to Tom. This means something. With a spread of only 91 votes (something that is considered a “dead heat” in many realms), it sends to me a clear picture that maybe the Ohio Section does not want the status quo. With only 30 percent of the Ohio Section Membership voting, there are 70 percent of the members which neither Tom nor I heard what you want. I would like to know this.
In July of 2009, I was appointed to finish Joe Phillips’ (K8QOE,SK) term. As you heard me say at many Hamfests, I considered myself as the “Gerald Ford” of the Section. I had 3 goals, “Keep the Section Running, Keep the Section Smooth, and Keep the Section Quiet”. Themajority of the votes allow for me to continue on as the Section Manager for Ohio, but this has to be Frank Piper’s turn at the Section. Please, let me know what you would like to see happen in the Section. Send me and e-mail, stop me at Hamfests, contact me by phone,or send a radiogram. Tell me what’s on your mind. As Mayor of New York City, Ed Koch’s
trademark was going around and asking people “How am I doing?” I want you to feel open enough to let me know that. I’m at your service for the benefit of Amateur Radio in Ohio.
To Tom, I want to say “Thank You” for a well run campaign. I’ve gotten to know you through the phone calls and e-mails we exchanged over the last several months, and I’m glad to have you as a friend. With that said, let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work….
ARES® is 75 years old!
Most of you that belong to the ARRL have probably heard that the ARES® program is now 75 years old! Just a bit younger than our club. hihi. The ARRL plans to celebrate the ARES® anniversary thru December 2010. There will be numerous items available thru the ARRL such as the “Anniversry Challenge Coin” which will look like the above emblem. The following is from the ARRL:
09/07/2010
This month, the ARRL and the Amateur Radio community celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service®, or ARES®. To help commemorate this milestone, the ARRL has introduced an anniversary Challenge Coin. The die-struck, 1.5 inch brass coin depicts the ARES 75th anniversary logo in gold with red, white and blue color fill, while the reverse shows the ARRL diamond logo against a hemisphere of the world.
Around the perimeter of the ARES® logo are the words Ready, Resilient and Responsive. “These words represent the critical need that ARES® activities have provided, and will continue to provide into the future,” said ARRL Emergency Preparedness and Response Manager Mike Corey, W5MPC. “The Challenge Coin honors the service of ARES® volunteers and all Amateur Radio operators who respond to the call of public service. We hope ARES® volunteers will enjoy the honor of having the first Challenge Coin issued by the ARRL.”
While there are many stories about the origin and history of challenge coins, these medals have been popular with organizations and leagues for decades. “Challenge Coins are probably most common among the military and civil service organizations,” explained ARRL Marketing Manager Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R. “These mementos are often used to commemorate a special occasion or to show loyalty among individuals that share pride and affinity for a particular service or agency. The coins are even popular among police, fire and EMS officials.”
The new ARRL Challenge Coin is struck with the year-of-issue, which in this case is 2010. Five diamond shapes on the coin’s head signify the five ARRL pillars: Public Service, Advocacy, Education, Technology and Membership. “We hope this is the first of a series of Challenge Coins for the ARRL,” said Inderbitzen. The ARES® 75th Anniversary Challenge Coin -- as well as commemorative T shirts
and mugs -- are available directly from ARRL.
The Scout Regen Project
by Harry Frietchen K8HFHi Gang,
I finally got the Scout Regen Kit built that I bought at Dayton Hamvention 2009. I was missing the earphone jack and a 1 Meg resistor. I called Qrpkits twice, emailed twice and finally saw the owner, Doug Hendricks KI6DS at the Dayton Hamvention 2010. He gave me the missing parts on the spot and said next time just send an SASE..
I messed up the decals, so I mailed a SASE and he returned a new set in less than two weeks. The kit is $50 now at www.qrpkits.com but was $40 last year at Dayton. Doug Hendricks KI6DS said it was their most popular kit. http://qrpkits.com/scoutregen.html You can download the PDF manual on their website. I attached the Schematic.
I had trouble with two digital meters measuring the current after it was finally assembled. While looking around in the radio shack I found a brand new IARC door prize that was a Harbor Freight Digital meter. I took it out of the packaging, hooked it up, and found the current was about correct.
Tonight at 8:30 pm tonight I put a 12 foot long wire on it laying across the family room floor and my first SWL station I heard was WYFR. I went to their website and found they were on 6.985 Mhz. Next I listened up the band on CW and heard KF2VM sign with K0TC on 40 meter CW. So it is working. It has two bands, 3.5 Mhz to 5+ Mhz and 5 Mhz to 10+ Mhz.The 47 page color manual you download is better than a Heathkit manual. Color photos, intermediate voltage and current tests as it is being constructed.
This might be a good club project for the new hams. I started ham radio in 1957 with an Allied Radio's three tube 'Ocean Hopper' kit, and 53 years later I built a solid state version!
So if you are inclined to build something, this was a fun project.73, Harry K8HF
Photos of Harry's project begin on next page. This brings up something that might be a fun item for our club. How about a “home-Brew” contest as the club had in past years. They had rules which forbid kits but in these times I think kits could be allowed. Anyways think about this and let Danny or myself know what you think of the idea. Might be a lot of fun which is what the club is supposed to be.
ARES® update
District 6 DEC reappointed
Jack Sovik KB8WPZ SEC has made it official that I, Jay Bookwalter KC8GNL will return as the ARES® District 6 District Emergency Coordinator. I had resigned a little over a year ago to concentrate on my business which with the economy was struggling. That seems to be in control for now. Anyways my replacement had been Lee Haefer KC8PFC from Bucyrus. Lee resigned on September 1st due to his jobs and health. I wish him well and hope to keep working with him when possible. I also want all to know that I currently have one Assitant DEC, being Phil Ackerman N8PA. Most of the IARC members will remember Phil as one of our past Presidents of many terms in office and as the EC for Richland County before Danny Bailey. He brings a wealth of good ideas and leadership in emergency service.I will be looking for one more ADEC from one of the western counties of which include Knox, Morrow, Marion, Wyandot, or Crawford which are part of the “COTS” hospital group. This way I will have a person to help with not only that hospital program but also to be of help to western counties as needed.Both Phil and myself also plan to begin more training for the ARES® groups of which will be discussed with the ECs then the members as we get back into the swing of things. The ARRL and the Section leadership also has improvements in the works so again as these are released I will let you all know.Till then if there are concerns for ARES® please contact me at the following: [email protected] or [email protected] or Phil at [email protected] 73Jay Bookwalter kc8gnl DEC Ohio District 6 ARES®
