Wow! Lake Munmorah Public School, what a superb effort yesterday with all your donations of stationery items for the children of Nepal.
Your generosity means we could fill 10 suitcases with all the items donated.
Be very proud of yourselves! Your donations will make hundreds of children very happy and provide them with resources that they would not ordinarily have.
Term 1, Week 8- Thursday, 16th March 2017
Thank you for being responsible and responsive global citizens. Your kindness will make a difference!

Thursday 16th March 2017 Principals Report Nepal Appeal Great school communities have enormous capacity to unselfishly think beyond themselves and to consider and respond to other communities that are not as well off or have been detrimentally impacted by a disaster. Yesterday, our great school did just this by showing enormous benevolence and generosity in donating a huge amount of stationery items to the children in schools in Nepal. (See photo on first page). It has been almost two years since this small nation experienced wholesale destruction when hit by a series of massive earthquakes, devastating homes, villages, towns, buildings and schools and by all reports many areas and communities are still just a pile of rubble, as if the earthquakes just happened yesterday. The reconstruction efforts continue but it will take years to rebuild the homes and key infrastructure of this proud country.
It is often said that the quality of a community is often measured by how we treat those less fortunate. With the amazing and impressive amount of stationery items donated yesterday it is easy to conclude that our community is one of the highest quality and one that does take the plight of others very seriously and genuinely wants to help others less fortunate. Over 100 pencil cases, packed full of pens and pencils and dozens of books and other items were donated by our students and families to give to the children of Nepal. These children have experienced considerable trauma with their lives being devastated by this disaster and their schools have largely been destroyed. Temporary learning centres have been erected and safe learning spaces are being provided where they are receiving tuition and the necessary psychosocial counselling to deal with the trauma. The stationery resources our community donated yesterday is much needed to allow students to continue their education and support the recovery process. We thank Ms Newman for her thoughtfulness and efforts in running this campaign and so to the student leaders and Ms Caban who managed much of the donated material. We look forward to seeing the Skype calls from Nepal as Ms Newman hands over the supplies to those children who will truly think it is Christmas to receive these wonderful treasures. We should be very proud that our great school has such a rich and enormous spirit
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) This great school takes every opportunity to promote a safe and secure school environment and
ensure that the behaviours of our students are underpinned by respectful relationships. In recent
weeks we have embarked on the introduction of a new comprehensive, integrated whole school
approach to student wellbeing and behaviour, Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). PBL is a
process that supports the creation and consolidation of positive learning environments that
enable student learning and wellbeing. It does not replace Program Achieve, it will work
complementary to this program, strengthening the core principles that we impart to the students
each day. PBL will increasingly feature in our school and you will come to hear more about it
over this year. Soon we will be asking you to consider and tell us about 3-5 ‘core values’ that you
believe to be most important for our school community. These values would be those that would
become the central component of our PBL program and drive the development of desired
virtuous behaviours in our students. At this time, I just ask you to think about these but soon we
will be surveying you to find out what you think to be most important. We are very excited about
the introduction of PBL and the positive influence it will have on our students. I will keep you well
informed on our progress with the key initiative
Day of Action against Bullying and Violence and Harmony Day – 21 March 2017 This year we will be combining these days to take the opportunity to promote the key messages
that bullying and violence in never OK and, as the most multi-cultural country on the planet we
will celebrate the diverse cultures that make up the Australian nation. Next Tuesday we will be
holding a morning assembly and families are more than welcome to join us. For parents, this day
also provides an opportunity to discuss these matters with your child and to reinforce the key

will celebrate the diverse cultures that make up the Australian nation. Next Tuesday we will be holding a morning assembly and families are more than welcome to join us. For parents, this day also provides an opportunity to discuss these significant days with your child and to reinforce the key messages of diversity, tolerance, acceptance and respect. The assembly will commence at 9:30 in the school hall.
P&C AGM The P&C AGM will be held next Tuesday 21 March in the teacher’s staff room. This is a very important AGM as all executive positions of the P&C will be declared vacant and the current office holders will not be standing again. This is an opportunity for a brand new P&C executive to be formed and to work with the school in our endeavours to provide our students the very best opportunities here at the school. We really encourage as many parents to attend this meeting even if you do not intend putting your hand up for an executive role. Hopefully we will have a full staff room on the night. Commences at 6:30pm. PAT Program – Developing Strong Writing Skills in Children- Next Monday Writing — it’s an important form of communication and a key part of education. But in today’s
technology-driven world, kids aren’t given many opportunities to practise and improve their ability
to write. This leaves many parents wondering how to improve their child’s writing skills. It takes
time to develop strong writing skills, and it can be a tough task to accomplish. Thankfully, there
are many things that parents can do at home to help improve children’s writing skills. At our next
PAT session, we will be offering some great advice and tips on activities parents can do at home
to help children develop sound writing ability. From fun activities to daily reading and writing
sessions, tips on how to improve kids’ writing skills will help your child build his or her skills in no
time. It will be held in the Hub and the Library on Monday 20 March at 9:30am and 6:00pm
respectively. Hope to see many of you there.
School Photos 17 March A reminder that our annual photo shoot will take place tomorrow. All students are to wear the full regulation uniform (including black shoes) and be well-groomed and presentable. These photos are valuable memories of a child’s school days and will likely be shown to other important people in their lives throughout their lifetime. It is important that they look good. Great Website to Help Your Child/ren at Home You want to help your child develop their literacy and numeracy skills, but working out how can be tricky. How do you find activities that reinforce and build on the concepts and skills your child will encounter in the classroom? The answer: this website. http://www.learningpotential.edu.au/ Everything here supports the Australian Curriculum for primary school, and is child (and parent) friendly. Browse by your child’s year level, or search for a topic, and the website will suggest ideas, activities, games and videos you can use to support your child’s learning. Instrument Donation Request Our school band continues to flourish and we have increased numbers for 2017, but we are well aware that some children are not able to be involved because of the costs of hiring or purchasing an instrument. To assist with this, we are looking for donations of any instruments that are in reasonable condition that families no longer use or require. Primarily brass and woodwind instruments are needed but any percussion instruments would be appreciated. If you think you can help I ask you to please approach the front office. YOU CAN DO IT
Persistence
Here are some of the “Persistence” lessons that our students have been learning about this week:
•Stating the meaning of persistence and interpreting what it means. •Stating the relationship between the “Giving Effort” way of thinking and persis-
tence. •Understanding the difference between “helpful thoughts” that lead to persis-
tence and “unhelpful thoughts” that lead to giving up.
One of the most important values of life is persistence. The ability to “not give up, when the going gets tough” can be the difference between succeeding and failing. Whether that be in sport, in your job or even in relationships. Now life isn’t about winning, but it is about achieving and reaching your potential. If you give up without having tried your best, you may look back with regrets. At Lake Munmorah Public School we want our kids to go through life developing an attitude that will see them reach their potential.
Developing persistence can be supported at home saying this to your children:
• Listen to your teacher and try your best. • Don’t worry about making mistakes. Make sure you are giving it your best
shot. • Some things are boring but they are important to practice and master (times
tables/ spelling etc). • It’s not always about winning. It is about giving 100% effort. • It is important to work hard because it will help you in life.
Congratulations to these students who have received Gotcha awards for demonstrating the values of YCDI this week:
•Ava K/1J •Daniel 3/4V •Ciara 5/6W •Keira 1C
Kind regards, Mr McSweeny

‘Tell Them From Me’ Student Feedback Survey I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will partici-pate in a Department of Education initiative. The Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback
on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways
that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell
Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will
typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours
between 13 March and 7 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey was sent home with Year 4,5 & 6
students this week. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form
to school by Friday 17th. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://
