Thursday 27th October 2016 Principals Report Term 4 Up and Running Well the term is in full swing with the memory of the last holiday disappearing very quickly for all. We are again very busy with the usual hectic pace of school life. Last night our school disco was extremely successful with the children appearing to thoroughly enjoy themselves and they are to be congratulated for their behaviour and positive way in which they conducted themselves. I sincerely thank the staff for their organisation and supervision of this very successful event. Tomorrow we have Day for Daniel and over the next few weeks we have Grandparent’s Day, Swim Scheme, Stage 3 camp and so on. It will continue to be busy. Our school App, Facebook Page, Notes and the School website will continue to provide you with accurate and up to date information about all upcoming events. Day for Daniel – Red Mufti – Friday 28 October Day for Daniel is about keeping kids safe through children safety and protection initiatives. It aims to help empower our children to Recognise, React and Report if they feel something is not right. Students are being asked to wear Red Mufti.

The objectives of Day for Daniel are:

To raise awareness about child safety and protection and to promote a safer community for

children.

To educate children regarding their personal safety and empower them to Recognise,

React and Report.

To honour the memory of Daniel Morcombe.

To have over 1 million people Australia Wide to participate in Day for Daniel.

Day for Daniel is also an opportunity for Australians to make a statement that crimes against

children are not acceptable in modern Australia. Grandparents Day NSW Grandparents Day celebrates the role grandparents and older people play in our society – both the things they have done, and the things they keep doing. The campaign recognises the diversity of grandparent relationships across age groups, cultural backgrounds, and geographical locations. It's a day to spend time with an older loved one and connect across the generations. NSW Grandparents Day is held every year on the last Sunday in October. This year it will be celebrated on Sunday 30 October. Our school community highly values the role grandparents play in the lives of modern day families and in particular the input they have into the development of children and young people. We consistently have grandparents in our school supporting the children’s activities. They come in as classroom volunteers or they are here in large numbers at any one of our community events. Quite a few of our grandparents have a primary carer’s role of some of the students at the school or are providing child care for pre-school children when both parents are in the workforce. This week our students have been busily reading and preparing stories, completing art work and decorating their room as they get ready for our school’s grandparent’s day next Thursday 3 November. We would like all grandparents to join us as we celebrate and show our appreciation of them. We commence at 12:00pm with a school assembly, followed by classroom visits and then lunch. Please join us.

Community meeting - Annual report As stated in the newsletter last week I am holding two community meetings on 10 November to provide to our school community a report on the work and progress of the school over the last year. This will also include information about plans for 2017. To accommodate all families we will be holding one meeting at 9:15am and then an evening meeting at 5:30pm. Identical content will be covered. I do hope that you can make one of these meetings and see what wonderful work is happening at your child’s school. Please claim the date now in your diary . 2017 Enrolment Numbers Again I please ask that if you have intentions of leaving the school at the end of the year that you contact and inform the office as soon as possible? Similarly if you know of any families who are intending commencing with us in 2017 that you encourage them to contact the school immediately. Kindergarten 2017 LINKS Program Remember that valuable information for all families about starting school and how to support children in the transition process can found on the Department website at: http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/

Mr Graham Holmes

The Latest Camp Australia OOSH News At Camp Australia OOSH we learnt about butterflies, a decision made by the staff and children to make this an outdoor activity being part of the program. The children had a unique experience when finding butterflies as they were nestled in a tree. Many comments were made on the different colours. Expanding the butterfly program the children used their creative abilities by designing and making their own butterfly using craft material. One afternoon during a cooking lesson the children made a Hummus dip with chickpea and oil which they mashed together. The food was enjoyed by all. The girls decided to make a paper chain, during the making each had to write a reflective thought on the chain. This was well received by some parents when collecting their children. During the day handball was a great success, games were formed along with friendships. Welcome to the new families who have recently joined Lake Munmorah camp Australia OOSH. Beverly North

Apples for Art Fundraiser

Did you know that whatever goes in our drains at school eventually ends up in the local lakes?

2J have found that there is rubbish going into our drains and have decided to bring attention to this

problem by having the area around the drains painted with an aquatic scene by a local artist.

To raise money to employ a local artist, we will be

running an Apples for Art stall on Friday.

For $1 you can buy a juicy fresh slinky apple.

Please support this wonderful initiative from our

students in 2J.

Library News

Scholastic Book Club Issue #7 Orders are due to the office or library by Wednesday 2nd November. Overdue Books Please have a good look around for books that are overdue and need to be returned to the library. Every week in library lessons, all students are reminded of their responsibilities as borrowers—to care for their books and return them on the due date or ask for an extension of their loan. Too many books are being returned in poor condition, or not being returned at all. In these cases, students will be asked to pay for a replacement copy. However, this is not really an acceptable compromise, as many of the books are hard to source and are usually more expensive than when they were originally purchased. Ideally, the return of the book is the most valuable option for our library. Rules for using the library and borrowing centre around the core values of: Care, Responsibility and Respect. Thank you. Julie Treharne

Bicycle, Scooter & Skateboard Safety When riding a bicycle you are required by law to wear an approved helmet securely fitted and fastened. In NSW there are no exemptions from wearing an approved bicycle helmet.

Research shows that helmets reduce head injuries by up to 74 per cent in crashes with motor vehicles. A bicycle helmet that is not correctly fitted and fastened does not provide enough protection in a crash.

Safe riding tips: •Always wear an approved bicycle helmet, properly fitted and fastened •Always obey the road rules, including traffic lights, stop signs and give way signs •Allow pedestrians a metre of space on shared paths, where possible. •Ride in a predictable manner so that other road users do not have to react suddenly to your movements •Give hand signals when changing lanes or turning left or right •Make yourself visible by wearing bright, light or reflective clothing •Plan your route using quieter streets, bicycle paths or shared paths •Always be in control of your bike. It is an offence to ride with both hands off the handlebars, feet off the pedals or to carry anything that prevents you from having control.

Foot scooters, Skateboards and Rollerblades •Foot scooters, skateboards and rollerblades may be ridden on footpaths unless signs specifically prohibit them, however, riders must keep to the left and give way to other pedestrians •Powered foot scooters cannot be registered and can only be used on private land •On separated bicycle and pedestrian paths, foot scooter, skateboard and rollerblade riders must use the section designated for bicycles, but must keep out of the path of any bicycle •Foot scooters, skateboards and rollerblades can only be used on the road during daylight hours •They cannot be used on roads with a dividing line or median strip or a speed limit greater than 50km/h, or a one-way road with more than one marked lane

Safety advice •On the footpath, riders of foot scooters, skateboards or rollerblades should not threaten pedestrians, especially the elderly – they may need to slow down or dismount in busy areas •To improve safety and enjoyment, foot scooters, skateboards and rollerblades are best ridden in recreational areas designated for their use •Foot scooter, skateboard and rollerblade riders should wear helmets and protective gear such as knee and elbow pads •The use of foot scooters, skateboards and rollerblades on the road is not recommended for

school-aged or younger children
