January Monthly Meeting 2018
“Hostas – A Carefree Shade Perennial”
Saturday, January 20, 2018
Hostas are the perfect low maintenance perennial for shade beds that only require good soil, mulching, and adequate watering once a week from spring through fall. This presentation will cover basic information regarding leaf sizes and colors, stems and flowers, and cultivation and care with lots of photos. Hosts may be planted and easily transplanted under and near most trees in dappled to full shade or part-sun and do not necessarily need to be divided. In Douglas County, their only problems include slugs or cutworms, early freezes, hail damage, and severe droughts, as well as deer and voles in rural areas. Our own fellow Douglas County EMG, Jeanne Klein, will present Hostas: A Carefree Shade Perennial in which she will share her experience, photos, and enthusiasm for this varied and reliable plant.
This will be one hour of Advanced Education from 10-30 - 11:30 am following our General Business meeting and Activity fair beginning at 9 am in the Dreher 4H building north room. This program is open to the public. Kathy Bourgeois, Vice President

News from Sharon….
Horticulture Hotline
Greetings from your hotline coordinators Amanda Hall and Chris Sundstrom. We look
forward to working with you this spring, summer, and fall with the hotline opening on
April 1st. Master Gardeners who look working the hotline often talk about loving the
chance to do research on gardening issues and the importance of sharing the best
information with the broader public. Are we expected to know the answers to the questions
we get off the top of our heads? In a word, no. We take down information, make sure we
know what the caller's questions are and then gather information/do research and get back
to the caller by phone or e-mail.
Who works the hotline? New and experienced master gardeners. All new master gardeners
are required to attend a training session and then work at least two afternoons with an
experienced master gardener. New members, to help us make sure you have someone to
work with, please put an asterisk after your name when you sign up on the calendar. The
dates and locations for the two training sessions have been set. The first will be Tuesday,
March 13th from 5:00-6:30 in the Deal Six Auditorium. The second will be after the
business meeting and advanced education session on Saturday, Mar 17th. We will meet in
the North room of Dreher from 11:30-1:00. Returning members are welcome to attend a
training session.
Sharon will let you know when the calendar is available for signup; the plan is to have it up
by the February business meeting. Last year was my (Chris) first year working the
hotline. I enjoyed talking with others who are passionate
about their horticultural pursuits, doing the research, providing useful information
to our community, and working with other master gardeners.

The Monthly Update is your chance to make your committee or activity known. If you are having
organizational meetings, activities, or a call for volunteers, let the Update help you get the word out. Send
the write up to Sharon Ashworth at [email protected] or Bekki Heckman at [email protected] by the 5th
of the month to be included in the newsletter. To assure your place on the next regular meeting agenda send a request to Ginny Turvey at
[email protected] 3-5 days before the meeting. You will also get a chance to speak at the meeting but
this will reserve a space on the agenda. If you are planning to distribute handouts, papers, or publish advertisements on behalf of EMG’s, these need to be reviewed by
Marlin Bates, prior to distribution or publication, to make sure we are on track with Kansas State University requirements.
