Weeping at the State of the World!
Philippians 3:17 - 4:1 is our scripture lesson for thisweek's message. This passage benefits from yourreading it several times and from various translations. There is one of several points from the passage that I liftup for your consideration now. It is found in verse18. Paul's heart is full of disappointment and sadnessdue to his observation that "many people live asenemies of the cross of Christ." There are multipleways their rebellion is so obvious. The fact that Paul hasrepeatedly made the fact known to many followers ofJesus Christ weighs heavy on his heart. That they seemso indifferent that Paul weeps about the state of theworld. If we slow down just for a few minutes to survey the stateof affairs in "our" world it would make our hearts sad, too. There are certainly signs of people pursuing agodly life to see and celebrate. However, there aremany hotspots in the world that point to a sad state ofspiritual affairs. You can summarize a description for the world'scondition in many ways. I choose to use an acronym:"MESS." This abbreviation comes from the late DickMurray and is short for, "Misery and Evil Side-by-
Side." Misery and evil are companions, which team upto create a MESS for individuals and for thisworld. Tears flow quite easily where misery and evilteam up. Paul's tears remind me of a similar occasion in Jesus'ministry when he sat overlooking the people coming andgoing into the city of Jerusalem. Jesus knows the effortsto which he has gone to reach these wayward souls, butthey refused (Matthew 23:37, Luke 23:37). Thescripture doesn't state it this way, but I have always seentears in Jesus' eyes as he laments over the MESS hissees. So, I invite you to reflect on the spiritual state of theworld. Consider God's continual desire that misery andevil be pushed aside by the Holy Spirit at work in us,through us and around us. May we let the tears flowfreely as signs of our prayers that God's deepestlongings for us and this world become a reality. May webegin by ceasing our rebellion, embrace God'stransforming grace and return to God with all our heart.
