Report on Puccinia striiformis race analyses 2010, Global Rust Reference Center, Aarhus University, Flakkebjerg, DK- 4200 Slagelse, Denmark. Mogens Støvring Hovmøller, Manager of GRRC, November 15th, 2010. Email: mogens@[email protected] This is a preliminary report based on an agreement between Aarhus University, CIMMYT and ICARDA to facilitate race analyses of samples of Puccinia striiformis, causing yellow rust on wheat. In 2010, CIMMYT and ICARDA have each supported the research by a contribution of USD 20,000, whereas Aarhus University has contributed with facilities, consumables and substantial scientific and technical expertise. A summary of the results can be ....... Sample submission and preparation Sample sites in 2010 were selected by staff at ICARDA, CIMMYT and NARCs in Africa and Asia, with a focus on high risk epidemic areas. The sampling procedure was ..........

GRRC perspectives

• Serve as global hub for network of regional rust reference laboratories (methodology, protocols, common sets of DNA markers, differentials, analyses, exploit current strengths)

• Undertake race analyses for areas with insufficient facilities• Facilitate R-gene postulation for rust resistance in wheat• Assist in training in wheat rust pathology• House a gold-mine of isolate ressources for research in

pathogen genomics, evolution and dispersal pathways at global scales (diversity in both time and space)

• Host ’wheat rust toolbox’ – database and web-based dissemination of results for disease surveillance and pathogen diversity

The European and Mediterranean Cereal Rusts Foundation

1. to organize international conferences on problems related to the rust diseases of cereals, with

special reference to Europe and the Mediterranean area; 2. to promote international co-operation on the study of cereal rusts in particular, and where necessary

of cereal diseases and pests in general; 3. to promote scientific research on cereal rusts in particular, and where necessary, of cereal diseases

and pests in general, and further the practical application the scientific results; 4. to edit or to promote the editing of an information bulletin on pests and diseases of cereals, with

special reference to cereal rusts.
