‘Let’s Go Out’
February 2017
25th Edition
‘Let’s Go Out’ is a regular newsletter to inform people
with sight loss about accessible activities and events
happening around London.Acknowledgement: We are grateful to service users, the Vocaleyes website www.vocaleyes.co.uk and Metroblindsport.org for their postings and related text.
Welcome…..
1
To the February issue of the newsletter which highlights
cultural events and activities available this month –
some are designed particularly to enable access for
people with sight loss – while all of them will be
accessible with a volunteer guide.
This is just a selection of what is available in and around
London.
Please note that Let’s Go Out is for information only and
we have no control over the sale and allocation of
tickets. All ticketing enquiries should be made to the
venue concerned.
Please remember that you can also arrange Link Ups
with volunteers for other events that take your fancy.
Simply call 07805 807181 and someone will get back to
you. (We have to reserve the right to decide if events
are unsuitable for a Link Up volunteer, but this is very
rare).

Update on the Link Up ServiceThe Link Up Service has been designed to enable
people with sight loss to attend social and leisure
activities with the support of a volunteer. We appreciate
that there were many inconsistencies with this service in
2016 and we apologise for any confusion or disruption
you may have experienced.
2017 brings new and exciting times for our volunteering
programmes with a strong focus on developing
volunteering programmes to better meet the needs of
people with sight loss. We need your input to help us
shape the services we offer and ensure we are
recruiting the most appropriate volunteers to support
you. We shall be inviting you to attend a focus group so
that you can inform the future of the volunteering
services we offer.
3
Staff UpdateWe are pleased to welcome a new member of staff to
the Volunteering Team.
Leila Pearce (Volunteer Development Coordinator) will
be looking after the Link Up Service from the 1st
February 2017. Leila will be happy to receive your Link
Up requests and work with you to develop the service.
You can contact Leila on 07805 807181 or at:

In a Chester pub, a ragtag group of singers is the unlikely first company to perform Handel’s Messiah to a crowd of unappreciative drinkers. So begins the journey of the world’s most popular and acclaimed choral work – a journey full of seemingly insurmountable challenges facing the composer at every turn.

The Pirates of Penzance
Audio introduction Opera
Date: Thursday 9 February 2017
Time: 7:30 pm
An audio introduction is available 15 minutes before the start of each performance. More information on the ENO venue page.
Let’s get this straight. The pirates, who take pity on orphans, are really peers of the realm. The 21-year-old, who has sworn to put them behind bars, is really only five. And the policemen, whose lot is not a happy one, are really, really hopeless at foiling felons…
A swashbuckling farce of brilliant humour and razor-sharp wit, Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of
12
Penzance makes for the perfect night out. Chock-full of memorable melodies, it includes the famous tongue-twisting patter song from the Major-General and the cowardly Police Sergeant’s ‘When a felon’s not engaged in his employment’.
For the first revival of this smash-hit production from renowned filmmaker Mike Leigh, ENO favourite Andrew Shore returns to sing the role of the army general alongside John Tomlinson as the Sergeant of Police. ENO Harewood Artists David Webb and Soraya Mafi sing the roles of the young lovers, Frederic and Mabel, and Gareth Jones conducts.
