A GRATEFUL NATION REMEMBERS With ceremonial shovels in hand, Ocean County officials joined with vet-erans and members of the Ocean County Shade Tree Commission and the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II with a living remembrance – the planting of a Tulip Poplar tree. “With the planting of this Tulip Poplar Tree in front of the historic Ocean County Courthouse in downtown Toms River we are preserving the history of the war, we are providing a living remembrance for all those who fought and survived and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting and preserving our democracy,” said Ocean County Freeholder Virginia E. Haines, liaison to the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the Shade Tree Commission. The recent planting of the Tulip Poplar Tree and also a concert at Wells Mills County Park featuring The Power House Big Band were all part of Ocean County’s commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War II. The newly planted tree mirrors one planted in 2018 during World War I com-memorations. Ocean County is home to one of the largest veteran populations in the state with close to 40,000 veterans calling the County home.Ocean County Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari noted that more than 500,000 New Jersey citizens served in the armed forces during World War II, more than 10 per-cent of the New Jersey popula-tion at that time. “This tree, with its strength and beauty, will stand in dedication to those who served our nation,” Vicari said. “With such a large senior citizen population calling Ocean County home, we have been privileged to be home to so many World War II veterans. Un-fortunately the number of World War II veterans are beginning to decrease and we must take the time to com-memorate the milestones of this war and remember those who served.” Ocean County had its share of heroes in the War. “We all recall the men and women that make up the Greatest Generation,” Haines said. She recollected the service of Leonard G. Bud Lomell, who called Ocean County home and served as the Army Ranger on D-Day, June 6, 1944, who found and rendered inoperable the five big guns of Pointe du Hoc while Ser-geant Jack Kuhn covered him. All before 9 a.m., Lomell and the U.S. Rangers became the first allied unit to complete their mission making Lomell one of the few who are recognized as most responsible for the Allied success on D-Day. In his book The Greatest Generation, Tom Brokaw wrote the following about the Veterans of World War II - They stayed true to their values of personal re-sponsibility, duty, honor, and faith. Freeholder Haines, during the courthouse ceremony, captured what was happening at the end of the war.“When the war ended in 1945, Time Magazine named Harry S. Truman, Man of the Year, the most popular toy was the Slinky and Abbott and Costello’s film, “The Naughty Nines” was released featuring the longest version of their Who’s On First routine,” she said. “Coming several months after the surrender of Nazi Germany, on September 2 aboard the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan formally surrendered, ending the Second World War. “Now, 75 years later, we gather to honor and remember those who served on this, the anniversary of the end of World War II,” Haines concluded.

The 16.8 - acre Tuckerton Creek acquisition is located at 376 South Green St in Tuck-erton Boro. The preserve contains about 1,900 feet of frontage on the eastern banks of the Tuckerton Creek. The lands are partially forested with trails and clearings to access the waterfront. The creekside portion of the property is partially bulkheaded with docks and the remainder is in its natural state. Before acquisition, the site was primarily used for fishing and boating. A 3,000 sq. ft. structure was planned for on the site but construction was never completed. The site is preserved and open to the public for passive recreation. The property can be accessed via entrance dirt driveway on South Green Street. The property can also easily be accessed by boat. A car top launch area for kayaks and ca-noes is available. This is the second acquisition in the Boro of Tuckerton since the start of the Natural Lands Trust Fund in Ocean County. The Tuckerton Creek preserve was acquired by the Natural Lands Trust Fund Program in July of 2020.

Hunting on Natural Lands Trust Properties Ocean County Natural Lands Trust provides hunting opportunities in various forms on approximately 22,715 acres or almost 88% of all owned properties. OCNLT are open to some form of hunting including bow and arrow, shotgun and muzzleloader. Properties are evaluated for hunting on an annual basis. This review includes newly purchased prop-erties as well as existing properties in which neighboring property uses have changed. The review also considers property-specific complaints or issues identified during the year. Evaluation criteria include property acreage, proximity to neighboring development, safety zones, local regulations, site accessibility, and non-compatible uses including trails or paddling corridors. Hunting is allowed consistent with state and local regulations. The County maintains a prohibition on hunting on Sundays. Deer driving is only allowed during the 6-day firearm season and is limited to properties identified as safe and compatible to this use. Property visitors should refer to the most currently adopted version of the Ocean County Parks and Natural Lands Trust Rules for more information.

Ocean County Parks and Recreation COVID-19 Statement As you browse our Ocean County Parks and Recreation 2021 Winter Program guide, you’ll notice many changes from past guides. In this time of COVID-19 we have altered or postoned many of our regular offerings with the best interest of the health of our visi-tors and staff in mind. We have reduced class sizes to ensure that we can maintain proper social distancing while still trying to offer you the best possible Parks and Recreation experience. Many of our classes will require you to wear a mask. We have postponed all of our van trips and any hikes, jaunts or other programs that require transportation by park staff in a county van. Many of our yoga and exercise classes will be offered outside depending on the class, masks may be mandatory. In addition many of our Pre-K and kids classes will be offered outdoors, weather per-mitting, and in the event we must move them indoors, we will have covered tables and offer individual bags of items used for arts and crafts so there will be no sharing. Our program rooms are cleaned and sanitized before and after each session. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during these challenging and ever-changing times.

Naturalist NightsWhat is a naturalist? The term is rarely used in our modern world. Teddy Roosevelt, John Muir, Gifford Pinchot and Rachel Carson were naturalists. A naturalist takes a holis-tic view of nature and eschews the supernatural. Naturalists are inherently curious, and that curiosity is encouraged during these short-subject programs. Enos Pond Winter Tree & Shrub ID WalkIt’s certainly easier to identify woody plants using their leaves or flowers. Novices are often intimidated by winter identification, when these more familiar features are absent. Many species have distinct characteristics that make them easy to identify in winter how-ever. 5. It is the participant’s or guardian’s responsibility to inform staff members of any medical problems that may inhibit your participation in a program. Please consult your doctor if you are not sure.

6. Please be advised that all return times are approximate. The actual times depends on the ability of the participants, prevailing weather, field conditions, and unforeseen circumstances.
