Updating an Older Virtual Machine to VMware Fusion 2VMware Fusion 2.0

VMware Fusion™ 2 introduces new virtual hardware that extends the capabilities of your virtual machine, including improved 3D performance and hot plug support for virtual sound, network, USB, and storage controllers. This technical note guides you through the steps to update your existing Windows virtual machines from VMware Fusion 1 to take advantage of the powerful new features in VMware Fusion 2.

VMware Fusion 2 is a free downloadable upgrade for all VMware Fusion 1 users.

Upgrading Your Virtual HardwareVMware recommends using VMware Fusion 1 to shut down your virtual machine, but if you already installed VMware Fusion 2 on your Mac, you can still resume and then shut down your virtual machine in VMware Fusion 2.

To upgrade your existing Windows virtual machines to VMware Fusion 2 virtual hardware

1 Launch VMware Fusion 1.

2 Make sure your virtual machine is shut down cleanly. If in doubt, assume your virtual machine is not shut down and use the following steps to shut it down cleanly

a In the Virtual Machine Library, select the virtual machine and click Run to resume it.

b Click the Windows start menu in the virtual machine, and select Turn Off Computer.

c In the Turn off computer dialog box, select Turn Off.

3 Quit VMware Fusion 1.

4 In Finder, navigate to the folder where the virtual machine file is saved, and make a backup copy of your virtual machine by selecting the file in Finder and select Duplicate from the Finder toolbar menu.

5 Download and install VMware Fusion 2. Go to http://www.vmware.com/download/fusion/ and follow the instructions.

6 Start VMware Fusion 2. When the Virtual Machine Library window appears, single‐click the virtual machine you want to upgrade to highlight it.

7 In the Virtual Machine menu, select Upgrade Virtual Machine. Click Upgrade in the dialog that follows.

8 Power on the virtual machine by clicking the power on button next to the virtual machine in the Virtual Machine Library window.

9 After the virtual machine is running, a number of things will happen as Windows notices the updated hardware, and dialog box boxes from each will likely overlap each other.

a Windows notices a number of new hardware components, which is expected as part of this virtual hardware upgrade. VMware Fusion 2 handles some driver installation automatically. Depending on your hardware, you might also see the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard. Click Cancel and finish the VMware Tools upgrade and reboot first.

b VMware Tools automatically starts the upgrade to the latest version. If it does not, go to the Virtual Machine menu and select Install (or Upgrade) VMware Tools. Make sure you upgrade VMware Tools and accept the reboot option when prompted by the VMware Tools installer upon its completion.

c After completion of the VMware Tools install, VMware Fusion presents you the option to install a complementary 12‐month subscription to McAfee VirusScan Plus, a new feature included with VMware Fusion 2 to keep your Windows‐on‐Mac experience as safe as possible and protect your Windows XP and Vista investment.

Select Remind Later and let the VMware Tools get installed first.

After the reboot, your virtual machine is now upgraded to the latest capabilities, such as DirectX 9.0c with Shader Model 2 3D support.



Turning on Useful New Features in VMware Fusion 2After you upgrade the virtual hardware, it is time to turn on the new useful features in VMware Fusion 2, because some of them are not enabled by default.

Before you can change the settings for the new features, you must power off the virtual machine.

To power off the virtual machine and go to the Settings window

1 In your virtual machine, go to the Windows start menu and select Turn Off Computer.

2 Select Turn Off in the dialog box to shut down the virtual machine.

3 After the virtual machine is shut down, click Settings on the virtual machine toolbar to display the Virtual Machine Settings window.

3D Graphics AccelerationVMware Fusion 2 supports DirectX 9.0c with Shader Model 2 and greatly improves 3D performance.

To set up 3D graphics acceleration

1 Click Display to check the Display settings. Select Accelerate 3D Graphics if it is not selected by default.

2 Click Show All to go back to the main Settings window.

Driverless PrintingVMware Fusion 2 adds the option to automatically add all the printers installed on your Mac to the virtual machine, without you having to install printer drivers for them in Windows.

To set up driverless printing

1 Click Printers, and select Enabled.

2 Click Show All to go back to the main Settings window.



Mirrored FoldersMirrored folders is a new feature in VMware Fusion 2 that allows you to easily map special folders on your Mac to their counterparts in your virtual machine. With Mirrored Folders, the contents of your Mac Pictures, Documents, Music, and Desktop folders automatically show up in your Windows virtual machine as the Windows My Pictures, My Documents, My Music, and Desktop folders.

Because you have existing data in your My Pictures, My Documents, My Music, and Desktop folders in your virtual machine, you must copy this data out of these folders into their Mac equivalents using drag and drop. This step is required because enabling mirrored folders hides any data that exists in those Windows special folders.

After you have copied the data in your special folders over to the Mac, you can delete it in your Windows virtual machine. For example, copy folders from your My Documents folder in the virtual machine into your Documents folder on the Mac, and then delete the contents of the My Documents folder in Windows.

After moving your data from Windows to your Mac, you can enable Mirrored Folders

To copy the existing data in the virtual machine to the Mac

1 Start up the virtual machine by clicking the Play button in your virtual machine window.

2 Go to your My Pictures, My Documents, My Music, and Desktop folders in your virtual machine, and drag and drop all your data in these folders to their corresponding folders on your Mac.

NOTE When you enable Mirrored Folders, any data present in your Windows special folders (My Documents, and so on) will be hidden from view because your corresponding Mac folders are mirrored into those folders, and this existing data is not accessible by way of the Windows user interface. The data is not deleted, and is still present in the virtual machine, just hidden. To see it again, disable mirrored folders.



3 Delete the contents of the My Pictures, My Documents, My Music, and Desktop folders in your virtual machine.

To turn on mirrored folders

1 Click Settings in the virtual machine toolbar to bring up the Settings window. Click Sharing to display the Sharing settings.

2 Select Share folder on your Mac to turn on shared folders and mirrored folders.

3 If you have existing shared folders that you configured in your virtual machine, they show up in the table under Share folders. Some of these might prevent you from turning on mirrored folders because enabling both would create nested folders—which is potentially dangerous. If that happens, you see a warning message in the top of the Sharing Settings window, and some of the mirrored folders are un‐selectable. Deselect some shared folders to enable the mirrored folders.

4 Check some or all four of Desktop, Documents, Music, and Pictures to turn on mirrored folders in your virtual machine.

5 VMware Tools prompts you to log out to enable the sharing. Click OK to log out.

6 Log in your virtual machine again.

7 You now see all your data that you copied in “To copy the existing data in the virtual machine to the Mac” are available in the virtual machine again through mirrored folders.

AutoProtectVMware Fusion 2 can take snapshots of your virtual machine automatically, at set, configurable intervals, a feature that nicely complements Apple’s Time Machine. The AutoProtect feature helps keep a recent, working state of your virtual machine consistently available, so that you can revert to this known good state in case something goes wrong.

To turn on AutoProtect

1 Click Settings in the virtual machine toolbar, and click AutoProtect to enter the AutoProtect Settings.

2 Select Enable AutoProtect. Set the frequency of snapshots and the number of which to store. VMware Fusion prepares the virtual machine for AutoProtect snapshot by taking an initial snapshot.

3 Click Settings in the virtual machine toolbar to bring up the AutoProtect Settings again, and confirm that AutoProtect has been enabled in your virtual machine.

Link HandlingVMware Fusion 2 can open web links in a default browser, whether Windows or Mac. You can set web links in your Windows applications to open in Safari, for example.

To enable URL handling through Default Applications

1 Go to the VMware Fusion menu and select Preferences to bring up the Preferences window.

2 Select Default Applications in the toolbar. Confirm that Open Web Pages with is selected. Use the pop‐up menu to choose your preferred browser.

NOTE If you are sharing your home folder in the virtual machine, you can also copy your data in these four folders directly to the Mac folders using the shared folder.

3 Click the add (+) button to show all the protocols that VMware Fusion default application handling supports, and select the ones you want to enable.

You can now open web links from the Windows virtual machine in your Safari browser or any other default browser you chose. The settings you chose in Preferences apply to all your virtual machines.

Shared Applications VMware Fusion 2 lets you set Windows applications to launch specific file types in your Mac’s shared folders, or directly launch Mac applications from inside your virtual machine.

To enable Shared Applications

1 Click Settings in the virtual machine toolbar, and click Sharing to enter Sharing Settings.

2 Under Shared Applications, make sure both options are selected.
