• TLEDs: T8 and T12 LED replacement lamps where the fixture is retrofitted to accept these lamps

• Troffer: a rectangular light fixture that fits into a modular drop ceiling and accepts T8 and T12 linear fluorescent lamps.

Why Starco TLED over LFLs - Efficiency

EfficiencyThe total efficiency gains observed byStarco TLEDs over fluorescent lightingis due to many attributes includingLED efficacy, directionality of light, andthe lack of ballast losses. Theseefficiencies all add up and enableStarco TLEDs to provide much betterperformance!

Why Starco TLED over LFLs - Longevity

LongevityStarco TLEDs last multiple times overfluorescent technology. This includesfailure rate, lumen depreciation, colormaintenance and warranty. Thedifference is so substantial, that newmetrics for LED needed to be developed. This includes lifetime ratings based onlumens instead of failure rate.

Why Starco TLED over LFLs – Cost Analysis

Page 13

Cost AnalysisThis matrix shows a simple payback on materialcosts considering different operating hours andelectrical costs. Due to the cost effectiveness ofStarco TLEDs, the majority of the applicationsmeet a 2 year simple payback on materials.

This enables no more than a 5 year turnkey(including installation and overhead) payback formost applications when the Starco Fast-Fuse™Wiring Kit is used.

This chart does not assume any utility rebates, maintenance savings or disposal savings. Thepayback only improves when the abovementioned items are added to the calculation.Because of the efficiency of fluorescenttechnology, a TLED upgrade is the only solutionthat meets most companies’ internal hurdle rate.

Why Starco TLED over LED Troffers – Cost/ROI

Cost of TechnologyEnd-users already have the infrastructureand the fixtures. It’s nice to get newfixtures but when payback is important, why pay for the fixture material cost whenyou can pay 30% of the cost and takeadvantage of 90% of the technologybenefits (including improving yourlighting and reducing energy usage, which is the bottom line.)

For comparison reasons, the Starco 18WTLEDs are being used. The fixture lumenoutput for both the integrated fixture andthe Starco retro-fit solution are 4000lumens. For most office applications,Starco’s 13W and 15W TLEDs improveupon existing lighting conditions andprovide ample savings.

Why Starco TLED over LED Troffers - Standardization

Page 18

Future-proofGiven the persistent advancement of LEDtechnology, there is no plateau in sight. At the end oflife, Starco customers can take advantage of thetechnology curve as they deem financially beneficial.Future benefits include: improved interoperabilitywith controls systems, LED functional improvement, increased efficacy, and even possible adoption oforganic LED and laser diode technologies in severalyears.

Vendor-AgnosticEven for serviceable LED luminaires, the lack ofstandardized components leads to issues relating tocomponent availability. Will the next components bebackwards compatible? Starco TLEDs work off anopen and proven platform. Since Starco’s solutionmodifies the fixture to add fuse protection andreplaces the sockets with more robust G13 sockets, the customer has the freedom to competitively andsafely upgrade the LED tubes later without restriction.

Why Starco TLED over LED Troffers - Serviceability

ServiceabilityThe majority of integrated LEDluminaires are not serviceable. Thefixture must be removed andreplaced as a whole. This is a newcost introduced with LEDs thattraditional lighting did not consider.

The commodity has turned from thelamps and ballasts to the wholeluminaire. On the other hand, Starcocustomers can cost effectivelyupgrade their aged TLEDs to thebest technology at that time as theydeem appropriate.

Why Starco TLED over Other TLEDs – UL Types

Page 21

UL A-Type TLED: Ballast Compatible/ Direct Fit Internal driver allows the TLED to operate directly from the existing fixture ballast. No modification to the fixture is required; lamps are directly replaced with TLED.

UL B-Type TLED: Ballast By-Pass/ Direct Line Voltage Internal driver allows the TLED to operate on line voltage without a ballast. Ballast must be removed or bypassed and the sockets wired to line voltage.

UL C-Type TLED: Remote Driver/ DC Voltage Output Remote or external driver powers the TLED rather than an integrated driver. Ballast must be removed and is replaced by an external driver. Sockets are wired

to the DC output of the LED driver.

Why Starco TLED over Other TLEDs – UL Type A

Page 22

UL Type A: Ballast Compatible/Direct Fit Ballast dependent. Weak Link. Spot

replacement afterwards Energy losses in ballast Electrical and safety issues. Arcing Humming/buzzing noise Can shorten life of LED tube Incompatibility issues. Troubleshooting issues. Still need diagnose if

tube or ballast Sockets still need to be replaced for incentive Warranty Issues Can replace with fluorescent and lose savings

Many plug-and-play TLEDs claim to operate on most ballast. To date, this claim is often misleading as almost all UL Type A TLEDs have some limitation and are not truly universal. The lifetime of the lighting system is dependent on the lifetime of not only the TLED, but the ballast as well. Almost all retro-fit solutions are done with an aged ballast and so this further increase the issue of lifetime. To ascertain the true efficiency of a lighting fixture replaced with TLED UL A Type, one needs to take into account the efficiency of the ballast. This varies widely from ballast to ballast.

Why Starco TLED over Other TLEDs – UL Type B

Page 23

UL Type B: Starco SolutionBallast Bypass/ Direct Line Voltage Original issues with line voltage to old sockets Starco Lighting has elegantly solved these

issues Comes with a fused wiring socket kit While others without our patent pending kit

still inherit the potential electrical safety issues, Starco TLED wiring kit mitigates all these issues

Follows incentive guideline by replacing the old sockets.

Why Starco TLED over Other TLEDs – UL Type C

Page 24

UL Type C: Remote Driver/ DC Voltage Output Driver dependent Probability is that the driver fails, need to

replace whole system Not that much more efficient than UL Type B More costly Locked into that manufacturer for replacement

parts Tubes need to be compatible with driver and

there is uncertainty that the new tubes be backwards compatible.

Can take advantage of dimmability but the marginal gains over the incremental cost make it prohibitive in most applications. Retrofits are the cost-effective solutions.

Industry Issues – Electronic Ballast Issue

Page 25

• UL and NEMA documents make it clear that there is an issue with electronic ballasts and T8 lamps. UL has identified the culprit as being poor connections. This increase in resistivity causes the electronic ballasts to compensate by increasing the output voltage assuming a start or restart condition and as a result causes arcing.

• UL tested industry standard ballasts to observe the effects when a poor connection was simulated on the ballast output. 80% of the samples exhibited ignition within 2 minutes and the arcing lasted from a couple minutes to even several hours.

• The UL report stated that despite the simulations being extreme, the displayed arcing may be produced by vibration, loose contacts, jarring or corrosion.

General Lighting’s largest product recalls

While the Cree recall had issues with poor connections internal to the tube, all thelinear fixture (LED and fluorescent) recalls listed here had issues with poor connectionsand as a result the ballast increased the voltage to compensate and caused arcing.

The Starco TLED Solution – Wiring Kits

Page 28

Fast-Fuse Socket Kit Mitigates almost all electrical issues Robust rotary locking G13 sockets. Fast-Fuse Protection

– Disengages circuit if any short or significant arcing is present.

– Disengages circuit if a traditional T8 tube is replaced. Interrupts power before enough current is developed to blow T8 tube.

No ballast– No unnecessary loss in energy– No arcing, over-voltage present when vibration,

loose contacts, jarring or corrosion is present– No compatibility concerns
