Upgrading the SST-PB3-CLX Profibus scanner firmwares

Summary: This document will explain you why there are 2 firmwares versions for the new BradCommunications SST Profibus module, how to check them and how to upgrade them if needed. We strongly recommend reading this document from start to the end in order to get enough information before upgrading.

1- Why there are 2 firmwares ?

The SST-PB3-CLX is a new architecture. It has been developed with better technology using 2 processors. This is why there are 2 firmwares:

- The pfbclx.ss3 file which manages the Profibus communication - The pfbclx.ss4 file which manages the communication between the backplane and the

module.

2- How to check the firmwares versions ?

=> The pfbclx.ss4 To know the Backplane firmware you need to look at the display of the module during the Boot phase, it will show the Firmware version (ex.: 7.33). => The pfbclx.ss3 To know the Profibus Firmware you can use the SST Configuration Tool or the HyperTerminal tool (which is also the upgrading utility). From the SST Configuration Tool: Click on Connect button then on Firmware version

From the HyperTerminal connection:

Create a connection with HyperTerminal as follows :

Cycle power on the CLX rack. (If you can't, INHIBIT the SST module from RSLogix and put it OFFLINE from SST configuration tool, then take it out and insert it again in the rack). While the SYS LED is red after powering up, hit several times the exclamation mark (!) from your keyboard until getting the following result:

To get the Profibus Firmware version, enter the command ver pfbclx.ss3 as shown in the next picture (Help command shows all the available options)

3- How to upgrade the firmwares versions with HyperTerminal ?

=> The pfbclx.ss3 Start a HyperTerminal connection as indicated above (Part 2 From the

HyperTerminal connection) To upgrade the firmware, use the command Ry pfbclx.ss3 to initiate a Ymodem send.

Once the series of C starts send the file using the Ymodem send.

Check it out with the command ver pfbclx.ss3.Then enters the command run

pfbclx.ss3 to exit System Configuration mode and start up. => The pfbclx.ss4

Start a HyperTerminal connection as indicated above (Part 2 From the HyperTerminal connection)

To upgrade the firmware, use the command Burn. Once the series of C starts, send

the file using the Ymodem send as indicated above (Part 3 Ymodem send), but this time you have to choose the file pfbclx.ss4
