U P L A N D T E R R A C E 1 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Upland Terrace Family, As the 2012-13 school draws to a close, there are a few things that I would like to remind parents about. First, May is a very important month at Upland Terrace as students in grades 3-6 will be participating in end-of-year CRT testing. 3 rd through 6 th grade students will be taking computer-based tests for language arts, math, and science. It is crucial that all students are at school on time every day, receive plenty of rest at night, and eat a nutritious breakfast before coming to school. It would be wonderful if every student could remain at school for the entire school day, every day. Thank you for all of your cooperation to ensure that your student is able to do their very best to show how truly brilliant they are. Secondly, any lunch money remaining in your child's account will be transferred over to next year. If they are moving on to junior high school and remaining in Granite School District, their money will be transferred to an account at the junior high. Please notify the school office to request a refund. If your student(s) will be eating hot lunch during these last few weeks of school, please make sure your student’s lunch account is current. Next, students who participated in Advanced Learner Testing will receive test results this month. We will be convening our school’s Advanced Learner Committee, and letters will be sent in the mail to inform parents of test results and placement information for the coming 2013-2014 school year. Upland Terrace will be changing to a new website during the month of May. The new site will have many more capabilities than the old one, and all schools will be moving to this new format to provide more consistency district wide. There is also a smart phone application available for iphones and android phones that will be directly linked to Granite School District websites and an abundance of other district information. Please watch for further information regarding this change. On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students at Upland Terrace I would like to express thanks and appreciation to Sue Parker, PTA President, and the PTA board for their hard work and dedication to our school. The PTA is a huge reason that our school is so amazing! I wish you all a happy spring and a long, restful summer! C o m m u n i t y C o u n c i lParents,

1. Fine Arts Program(s):   On September 24th 2013, the Granite School District communicated to all Elementary school principals what their final budgeted decision was regarding a Fine Arts Specialist resource for each Elementary school. We’ve been given an extremely short time frame (10-days) to give our schools “choice” for utilization of this resource for the 2013-2014 school year. Watch your email accounts for a survey to help us gather data that will influence our recommendation. If you are NOT already on the Principals mailing list (email), please sign-up here: http://uplandterraceelementary.weebly.com/ The sign-up is titled “PARENT / GUARDIAN EMAIL!” 2. School Community Council Elections:  We have two (2) parent positions expiring September 30th, 2013. We’d like for every parent to ponder the question: “Would I like to be on the SCC (School Community Council) for the next two years?” Maybe you know someone who’d like to be involved and needs that gentle nudge to get involved? The good news is that you’ll have ALL summer to think about this and research the

possibilities. It’s simple to throw your name in the hat. All you’ll need to do is fill out a “Declaration of Candidacy” and return it to Mr. Carbaugh ([email protected]). The forms will be available on-line and in the office at the starting of the next school year.

Elections will be held the week of September 23rd to coincide with SEP’s. Once we have all the candidates, voting will be held on-line.

Feel free to contact any member on the council below for more information, time commitments, qualifications, and training requirements.

SMITHS, DANS, FRESH MARKET& BOX TOPS

HELP OUR SCHOOLWe handed in our Fresh Market/Dan's receipts this past week. Thank you to everyone who helped in this program.  Please continue to save your receipts as well as your Box Tops.  Also, Smiths is still accruing money for our school.  If you haven't linked your card, please do so.  All of these efforts help.

UPLAND IS AWARDED PTA ART GRANT

We are proud to report that Upland Terrace is the recipient of the Utah PTA Arts Grant for $500. This money will go toward supplies for Art Attack,  Art Night and our for our Art Specialist. Way to go Upland!

I am very honored to have the opportunity to be a part of Upland Terrace Elementary.  We have amazing parents, teachers, staff, and most importantly students. A year ago I had no idea how much I would enjoy my role not just in the PTA, but at the school.  I have gotten to know many wonderful people and have been humbled with the support from so many ( and you know who you are).  We all should be proud of our school.  Our families and staff make Upland Terrace the great school it is.  With continued support, I have no doubt that Upland will continue to be a wonderful environment for our children to learn and explore.  Please welcome Brad Poelman, next years PTA president.  Brad, you will do a fantastic job!!!

-Susan ParkerPTA President

the carnival is comingMark your calendars for Friday, May 17th for the annual Upland Terrace PTA Carnival. The Carnival is the only PTA fundraiser for the year. All proceeds go towards the funding of programs that support Upland Terrace such as: Art, Art Specialist, Vision Screening, Field Trips, Teacher Grants, International Week, Safety and Welfare, Red Ribbon Week, Community Events, Great Music and much more. We are currently collecting in-kind donations for our traditional class baskets for the auction. Look for information that was sent home with your student that tells what their class theme is. We appreciate your support! Thank you in advance for making this a successful event!

W h a t ’ s U p U p l a n d ? On April 10, these 5th graders (pictured) and just as many 6th graders went to the Granite District Debate Tournament. (So 24 of our great Upland students) Our school got the top three slots for affirmative teams earning them invitations to the State Tournament. http://www.graniteschools.org/depart/teachinglearning/curriculuminstruction/gifted/Pages/DebateTournamentResults.aspx

Two of the negative teams also went on to State. At the State level Henry Poelman and Truman Pugsley received the 4th place affirmative team award, while Rex Tippetts and Jack Engel took the 6th place affirmative honors. Mr. Hood’s 6th grade team of Emma Ferguson and Emma Beaird walked away with the 6th place negative team award. Jack Engel, Amelia Olds, Katelyn Howe and Emma Ferguson received speaker awards.

They all did a great job. The competition was fierce. If you see these students this weekend, please congratulate them.

If you'd like more information just ask Kim Gardner.

2nd Grade Students Participate in the WAX MUSEUM

6th Graders Step Back in Time With Medieval Festivities.

A hands-on science demonstration came to Upland Terrace. Students rotated through six learning centers. This hands-on lesson was about geology. Students were able to get up close and personal with fossils, rocks, and other materials which helped them learn about science in a different and fun way.
