This is a guest editorial, and it will be my last for Upper Hutt City Council. For those of you who have not yet heard, I am leaving after nearly ten years (and several different roles) for an exciting new challenge in Wellington.

In all the farewell speeches I have ever heard, the person leaving always mentions how much they are going to miss the people. In my case, not only will I miss the amazing teams we have working for this city, in library, community development,

community engagement and recreation services, I will also miss all the community groups that make up the social fabric of Upper Hutt. I hope you all realise that what you do gets noticed, it is appreciated and is valued. I cannot emphasise that enough. Our community groups, help this city be a great place to live.

So I leave you with a challenge - you, reading this right now - you

Welcome to the winter edition of Chatter - yes, winter! Almost half the year has gone!

I’m really proud to live and work in Upper Hutt. We have such a beautiful natural environment, but best of all we have a really strong community. Upper Hutt wouldn’t be the same without the many tireless volunteers who freely give their time to support those less fortunate. Without these amazing people, many of our service, cultural, social and arts organisations simply wouldn’t exist. This edition of Chatter has a number of features providing useful information and outlining opportunities to celebrate our volunteer sector - as always we value your feedback and welcome

any further ideas or suggestions you may have.

I’d like to take this opportunity to give a huge thanks to Andrea Curtis for her many years of work within the community. Andrea has been a passionate advocate for all things Upper Hutt and an inspiration to many of us. On behalf of the Community Services Division, I wish Andrea all the best in her new role and leave the final words to her...

WELCOME TO CHATTER

Page 4: Upper Hutt Community Chatter - Winter 2014

While our team are busy working with the community on various projects, a large focus for the Community Development team at the moment is reviewing our work and planning ahead. We’ll be analysing the results of the Community Services Survey which provides us with valuable information on what your group’s needs are and potential areas of improvement for us. I hope you all had a chance to complete it on behalf of your work place or community group.

We’re also thinking of our long term goals: where will Community Development be in Upper Hutt over the next few years and what will that look like? We want to ensure that not only are we well connected to the Council vision and direction but that

we are representing the people in our community well, by delivering needed actions with well thought out engagement.

As a Team Leader, my hot topics are our upcoming International Safe City reaccreditation with the World Health Organisation. I love that we have this accreditation and that we can own our ‘safe’ status based on all the hard work we do together. The other topic on my mind is that I’m off on maternity leave in November to have baby #3!

CAN make a difference. If you are already connected and making this community a better one - thank you, now go nominate your group for the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards! If you are not yet connected but want to make a difference - look through the Community Directory to see what group rings your own personal bells, one that fits your values, and help them achieve great things.

I have been lucky enough to work with hugely inspiring people, and I leave you in entirely capable, committed, creative, hardworking hands. As a resident, I feel lucky to know first-hand how hard those teams work on behalf of our city – and I am beyond proud of them.

National Volunteer Week is coming up on the 15 - 21 June. National Volunteer Week is New Zealand’s largest celebration of volunteering and civic participation, with events held across the country to recognise the invaluable contribution made by volunteers in Aotearoa. There will be guest speakers from Volunteer Hutt and Wellington Community Trust as well as music and complimentary food and drink.

FUNDING

Airport AwardsThe Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards are held as a partnership between Wellington International Airport, Wellington Community Trust and the five local Wellington councils. Each city will be holding an award ceremony for their nominated groups where the winners of five award categories will win a $1000 grant and the runner up of each category will receive a $250 grant. On top of this, our overall Upper Hutt Supreme Winner will recieve an extra $1000.

The five award categories include; Heritage and Environment, Arts and Culture, Sport and leisure, Health and Wellbeing and Education and Youth Development. Any not-for-profit group can be nominated, as long as they work using mostly volunteers. Group members are able to nominate any group that they are a part of, and you are also able to nominate as many groups as you wish.

Upper Hutt’s 2013 supreme award went to the Lighthouse Family Home for Girls. Spokesperson Paul Thompson said that the award has had many benefits for his organisation. “Winning the

Community Awards in 2013 has helped the Lighthouse Family Home for Girls to raise their profile in the community, which has enabled us to tap into other funding and support services that we previously had not known. The prize money was also a huge help, as it has helped to upgrade our TV sets for the digital switchover, which we would not have been able to afford to do otherwise.”

No one knows what our city’s community groups do better than the residents of Upper Hutt. The people of our city that volunteer for a group or interact with a group regularly are the ones that should be putting these groups forward. Therefore it would be best if Upper Hutt residents could take five minutes out of their day to go online and fill out a nomination form. Nomination forms can be found on the Upper Hutt City Council website at: www.upperhuttcity.com/wellington-airport-community-awards

Nominations close Monday 30 June.

Community GrantsThe Upper Hutt City Council Community Grants Funding Scheme is opening soon. The purpose of the Community Grants Funding Scheme is to support the development of a positive healthy city by contributing financially to local organisations, which strengthen the community support network in Upper Hutt.

There are two funding amounts available for allocation. There is $34,500 available for allocation under the Community Grants Scheme which is specifically for groups that operate within Upper Hutt. Alternatively, the Regional Grants are for groups that help service Upper Hutt residents but are not situated specifically in the Upper Hutt community. This grant has $37,000 available for allocation.

Most not-for-profit community groups that need financial support are eligible to apply. However the community grants are a contestable fund, which means that the applications that comply the most with our priority ranking will be more likely to get funded. The Upper Hutt City Council has three main priorities

for the funds:

1. Operation or administration costs for organisations involved in community support work (i.e. salary, rent, power, and phone).

2. Projects which enhance existing community support programmes where additional resources are required

3. Community driven initiatives for events or programmes which promote a sense of community or contribute to community well-being.

The types of things funded through the Community Grants Funding Scheme is quite general. The main restrictions that Council follows include: • Arts based projects that can

be funded under the Creative Communities Funding Scheme.

• Projects or groups that are already funded by central Government.

• Schools. • Equipment that is not

fundamental to the provision of your group’s service.

For an application form and more information on the Community Grants Funding Scheme,

Hey I’m Tara! I’m a Hutt Valley girl and before coming to work alongside the Community Development team, I attended the Hutt Valley Teen Parent Unit for two years.

As a cadet, I am able to assist the team with any projects that they are doing which is a great opportunity to learn of all the amazing things going on in our community. One of the main things I have been doing is getting mural designs painted on Chorus Cabinets around Upper Hutt to prevent graffiti. We’ve had to make decisions on what artists and designs are most suited to the cabinet

locations, so keep your eye out for them toward the end of June. There will be lovely new murals to admire in Upper Hutt!

From June, I will be taking on a new role as an Employment Development Assistant, supporting Mel as she works with job seekers through the Employment Development programme.

I have an exciting couple of months ahead, with an extended contract for our Em-Dev programme meaning I am able to introduce Tara, our new Employment Development Assistant. Having Tara will allow us to offer you a more efficient and valuable service for all your employment needs.

The second six week women’s Breakfast Club has been successfully completed by eight women. In today’s highly competitive job market Breakfast Club offers participants tools and skills such as tailored CV and cover letter writing, interview styles and tips and presentation to enhance employment opportunities.

Due to the success of the women’s Breakfast Club, the programme has been further developed to facilitate men. This six week programme for men is currently underway and takes a more in-depth focus on job searching and provides a one-on-one approach to help men progress their employment opportunities.

Kia Ora! The last few months have been full of exciting events for the community of Upper Hutt.

One event was the launch of the How Can You Help? digital tool on the 10th and 12th April at Expressions and Upper Hutt City Library. This tool provides everyday citizens with the skills to be effective helpers to victims and perpetrators of family violence. The launch events were attended by over 100 people and enabled a wide range of community members to learn about using the free digital tool and to take away CD copies to show to their families, workmates and community groups. There were also other resources available to take away on how to support

those experiencing unhealthy relationships and what citizens can do to create strong communities together. The public heard from national speakers Frankie Stevens, Mayor Wayne Guppy and Lesley Elliott, mother of victim Sophie Elliott, as well as experts from the It’s not OK campaign. To access the How Can You Help? tool go to www.upperhuttcity.com/Its-not-ok or email [email protected] to receive your free copy.

Congratulations Young Achievers Awards winners! The Young Achievers Awards were celebrated on May 19 with a Civic Awards ceremony at Expressions Genesis Energy Theatre. The evening was an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of young people in Upper Hutt under the categories of Social Hero, Leadership, Cultural, as well as ‘Be the Change’ which was the theme for this year’s Youth Week. His Worship the Mayor Wayne Guppy presented both his Mayoral Award and the Supreme Award.

The night was also a chance to showcase some local talent with the Maoribank School kapahaka group performing, as well as the Worship Centre Church Youth

Group. They performed alongside local star Renee Maurice, winner of NZ’s Got Talent and heard from guest speaker Guy Ryan, CEO of Inspiring Stories.

Neighbours Day AotearoaNeighbours Day Aotearoa was well celebrated in Upper Hutt with various community events happening over the weekend of 29-30 March. Two community gardens - Clyma Park and Tawai Park - held events along

with the Mangaroa/Whitemans Valley Community Resilience Network holding a large event at Mangaroa School. Timberlea was thriving with over 250 people participating in street BBQs, as part of a TOP Timberlea initiative.

X-ROADS Youth Alcohol ExpoEach year young drivers cause nearly half of all alcohol-related road crashes. In the Hutt Valley from 2008 - 2012 there were 167 injury related road crashes involving young people where alcohol and/or drugs were detected. These statistics have driven the Upper Hutt City Council and Police to work closely together to create an event that provides education for young drivers about alcohol and drugs.

Well-known youth worker and Good Morning presenter Darryl Gardiner will host the event, along with presentations by musician Rio Hemopo (former Fat Freddy’s Drop and Trinity Roots member) and Tori

Morrison, the mother of a drink-driving victim.

The students will get to experience first-hand the procedures that Police, Fire and Wellington Free Ambulance use in real situations. There will be a large number of interactive activities, as well as education about how to get your graduated driver’s license and to raise awareness of creating a party plan, avoiding risky behaviour and looking after each other.

X-ROADS – Good mates. Good choices.

16

It’s been a really exciting and busy time for the Community Development team. Hutt Valley Police and Community Development are coordinating a big event for our young people in the Hutt Valley. The X-ROADS event targets young drivers and young people and aims to provide them with education and engagement from our local emergency services and keynote speakers.

X-ROADS will be held at Lane Park in Upper Hutt and we anticipate around 2400 students will attend from colleges throughout the area. You can read more about X-ROADS below.

Hi everyone. Those working alongside me with the TOP Timberlea project have been very busy. Over the month of April we were focusing on safety in and around the home. So many injuries occur at home and most can easily be avoided. I’ve been going to people’s homes and completing Home Safety Checks: looking at fire safety, hazards that can cause trips and falls and other matters such as dampness and ventilation. As we approach winter, these are all really important aspects to keeping healthy and being safe.

For the month of June, we are focusing on our little animal members of the whanau – dogs! Being a responsible dog owner is really important and we’re going to

focus on education, dog safety and the requirements for dog ownership. I’m working alongside our Council dog rangers and Housing New Zealand to inform the community about financial options when registering your dog and what’s involved in dog ownership and responsibilities.

Some interactive activities are in the pipeline to promote safety around our lovely furry pets and looking after their health and wellbeing.

It’ll be an exciting month!

WELLINGTON AIRPORT REGIONAL COMMUNITY AWARDS 2014www.upperhuttcity.com/wellington-airport-community-awards | Nominations close 30 June

Kia Ora! The Community Engagement team has been organising the Funding Presentations in June in collaboration with Community Development. Before I started my job here at the Council I worked in the funding sector, so I was able to draw on my insider knowledge and invited some of the best experts in the field to share their knowledge with our community. We will look into offering other training sessions and seminars in the future that meet the needs of the Upper Hutt community.

One of the next big projects for our team is the update of the Upper Hutt City Community Directory. All community organisations listed in the directory will receive an email and a letter prompting them to let us know whether the listed information is correct, or to provide us with more up-to-date details. Please take the time to respond so we can capture

all the current services based, and provided for, in Upper Hutt.

Have you been to one of the Community Network Forums yet? I facilitated the first two forums, but from now on the forums will be led by members of the community. They’re a great place to share your knowledge and skills with other organisations in the sector. We don’t always need to bring experts in to run workshops or provide training, as there is so much knowledge in the community sector that we can all draw on. The Community Network Forum is every third Wednesday of each month, 12.30-1.30pm in the Library’s Rotary Lounge. See you there!

Big changes ahead for Settlement SupportKia ora koutou!

2014 continues to be an exciting year for Settlement Support. After taking local newcomers to Orongomai Marae in February and hosting a meeting at Parliament with MP Chris Hipkins in March, we have finally launched a Newcomers Network, Global Friends, in the Hutt Valley.

Global Friends is a social group for migrants who want to meet other newcomers and explore their new country together. The group meets several times every month, organising different kinds of social get-togethers and trips around the region. Starting with nine founding members, the group currently totals 25 keen newcomers and keeps growing!

As some of you may already know, last year’s review of the Settlement Support initiative has led to a major restructure of the delivery

system that will be effective from July 2014. Migrants will continue to receive face-to-face support, though the provider of this service is yet to be determined. Essential information will be available through Immigration New Zealand’s phone contact centre and the NZNow website (www.newzealandnow.govt.nz) which has been refurbished to cater to migrant needs and concerns.

Upper Hutt City Library offers a wide variety of programmes for adults ranging from Tai Chi to writing and book groups. In June we will be celebrating World Wide Knit in Public Day where you are invited to come to the Library (bring your own wool) and knit a beanie. These beanies will be donated to Trentham Community House, who will distribute them to those in need within our community.

Driving Miss DaisyDriving Miss Daisy Upper Hutt is very proud to announce the arrival of the newest vehicle in our fleet: a lovely VW Caddy modified at factory to take wheelchairs.

This is the second mobility vehicle in my fleet of five cars. We have a mobility vehicle available seven days a week and we accept Total Mobility cards. We must be pre-booked.

We can assist our clients around the supermarket and to run errands, great for our all of our elderly and disabled clients who still wish to remain independent.

We are also available for airport transfers for all age groups, we are not just for the elderly.
