We have a celebrity visitor, who obviously likes our club:Sheriff Robert P. Peryam

Joe Miklas does the news and does not let people get away withanything

- not even with the Bougainvillea Ball - which took place ages ago...

Talking about "ages ago"Who do you think that is:

Bette Brown brings in Dominga Leroy

Dominga is a metal artist, who does wonderful sculpturesand a 16 year Key Largo Resident.

Dominga was born to a Haitian mom and a Dominican Republicdad.

That's why she says she's from the whole island. She now feels the strong bond and a call to help the country she

was born in.

Dominga reports on her impression from Haiti:Port-au-Prince is completely destroyed.

People now live in camps made of non-durable materials which will not

be able to withstand the elements, with the rainy season coming up.

Diseases like tb are spreading fast and with most of the corpses, still buried under the rubble

the contamination of the water supply is a ticking time bomb. There are about 8,000 amputees, who have to get around with

walkers, built from pvc pipes.Haiti once was one of the richest nations in the Caribbean.

Haitian leader enriched only themselves over the past decades. The land was robbed from natural resources

and life stock over the years. Now everything is imported fromthe US

and even the food and medical supplies is being taxed.

Dominga goes back to Haiti to teach the people how to survive and help themselves.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Bette Brown spearheads a Haiti initiative. She needs all thehelp she can get. The latest news from Laura Hagen and Marilyn Needam is really uplifting. They continue to help peopleeverywhere they go. Last Sunday morning I received a call from Laura and she told me they spentSaturday helping 80-100 people at a makeshift clinic up the road. I spoke with her again today, andevidently she was about to deliver a baby. Lot’s of pregnant women – thank God Laura and Marilyn arethere. The clinic/orphanage is progressing nicely, with a lease pending, repairs under way, and locks changing.Laura will return to the states on March 6th for a few days with her family, and then she, Dominga and Iare flying back to Port-au-Prince on March 11th. I am taking my video camera, and hope to bring backsome video coverage of the location that Laura and Marilyn have found for their clinic. Namingopportunities are available!!!!Got an e-mail blast from the past last week for an old high school buddy, world famous print artist DavidJansheski. He is donating one of his prints to the cause –more on that as it progresses. Thanks David! The kids at Kelly Astins Montessori collected their parking money from the Rotary Nautical Flea marketlast weekend and donated it to Laura’s clinic. How great is that! And Dominga Leroy sat at the NauticalFlea Market on both days, proceeds of which will also go to the cause.Donations continue to come in and I thank you all.. WHAT IS THE ROTARY FOUNDATION “SHARE SYSTEM”? The SHARE system is the mechanism through which The Rotary Foundation Program awards aredistributed worldwide. In the SHARE system, Annual Programs Fund contributions to The RotaryFoundation are transformed into Ambassadorial Scholarships, Matching Grants, Group StudyExchanges, and more. At the end of every contribution year, (ending 30 June) each Rotary district’s contributions to theAnnual Programs Fund are divided into two funds:

50% to World Fund50% to the District Designated Fund (“DDF”)

The 50 percent to the World Fund pays for worldwide programs available to all Rotary districts andclubs, regardless of their specific contributions. The district uses the remaining 50 percent or “DDF”to fund the Foundation programs it chooses to participate in, such as Ambassadorial Scholarships, credit toward the sponsor portion of a Matching Grant, an additional Group Study Exchange orsimplified grants. THE THREE YEAR CYCLEAn additional facet of the SHARE system is its unique funding cycle wherein Annual Programs Fundcontributions are invested for three years and used for programs three years after they are received. The three year cycle gives districts time for program planning and participant selection and allows theFoundation to pay for administration and fund development costs from the earnings from thoseinvestments. The access earnings can also be used to support programs funding, thereby NO donation has been used for administration cost, but is spent in THE ROTARY FOUNDATIONPROGRAMS! To continue this process your donations are important for the future. It is time to givenow and leave our legacy for Rotary year 2012-2013. YOUR DISTRICT 6990 FOUNDATION COMMITTEE STANDS READY TO ASSIST YOU INACCESSING THESE FUNDS! OUR ROTARY FOUNDATION COMMITTEE CHAIR IS PDG JACK MARTIN, H/PHONE; 305-865-0747; E-MAIL: [email protected] HE WOULD BEHAPPY TO CONECT YOU WITH THE PROPER PERSON TO ASSIST YOU.

The Club's website is up and running. Go to:http://keysrotary.orgFrank Derfler put a lot of work into this project. He needs your help to keep the site alive and attractive. You can email himpictures and all bits and pieces of information you want on theClub's site at [email protected] e-newsletter is for all our members who have e-mail and for all members who attended the lastmeeting, but can’t remember, and for all members who missed the meeting, but want to know whatthey missed.Simply ignore typos and grammatical errors. I'm good at proof reading other peoples stuff, thoughI'm generous with my own writing. Some of your computers can read html (formatted) e-mails, some of you can’t - yet. I’m curious howthis endeavor works out, because some of you might receive the pictures as attachments (not good)and some of you will find the pictures embedded – as they are supposed to be in a newsletter. I scalethe pictures down to increase your download speed, because I don't know how many of you are stillon a dial-up connection. So let’s try to get this working. E-mail your feedback, error or omissions report, or the special

message, you want to communicate to your Fellow Rotarians and I will be happy to include it in our(almost) weekly Newsletter. Though, I will not be able to assist you if you want to promote yourbusiness or if you are running for any office.Michael A. Mayer
