PROJECT OVERVIEW The Upper Tanana Airport Planning Study (UTAPS) will examine several road system airports in the Upper Tanana region to determine an appropriate site or sites for a regional hub airport. This study evolved from the 2003 Copper Basin and Upper Tanana Valley Regional Airport Plan, which explored current and forecasted aviation needs in the region. Based on recommendations made in the 2003 study, the airports in Tok, Tanacross, Northway, and Gulkana are now under consideration to become a regional hub. Currently, each airport serves a different role in its community; the study will consider a variety of factors such as location, size, and stakeholder needs to determine how one of the airports could be expanded or transformed into the regional hub airport. The goal of this project is to investigate conditions and solicit stakeholder feedback in each location to determine the most logical place for a regional airport that can meet the needs of all or most users.
