FITZROY COMPARES
Fitzroy Bowling Club merged 3 clubs (Fitzroy, East End, Waiwaka Women) into one back in 1998, and, one of the many merger tasks was “insurance” at the premises at the East End Reserve.
AND FIND TOWER
CLUB COVER IS BEST
WITHAPPLESAPPLES
After obtaining information from all 3
clubs executives and members, it was
pleasing to see that TOWER was the
preferred insurance company by all 3
clubs and indeed dozens of members,
however it was good business
practice to obtain quotes from other
insurance companies to compare
“apples with apples” as well as actual
premium costs.
In 1998 we found that TOWER
was not only the most competitive in
price, but was
also the most
comprehensive
cover for
Bowling Club
needs – plus
in those days
our members
cover was on
a commission
basis to our
club.
Over the
past 10 years
our club has
enjoyed a
good business relationship, none
more than a “break-in” 2 years ago
when extensive damage was done to
an exterior wall and windows. Our
Secretary/Manager spoke highly of
the prompt service from TOWER, their
assessor and building company who
completed the repairs.
Good business practice is to
ensure that our costs are checked
annually and this is no difference in
our club when it comes to insurance
– every 2 years we go out into the
market place for insurance quotes and
have found when we do TOWER is
still the best policy and best price for
our bowling club.
Further to our excellent
relationship
with TOWER
as our insurer
we have also
benefitted from
the Bowls NZ
TOWER Bowls
Development
Fund when
promoting
Have A Go

programme.
The Fitzroy
Bowling Club not only commends the
TOWER Bowls Club Cover but also
recommends it as one of the best
in the market place – tell your club
Treasurer to get a quote – you won’t
be disappointed.
There is a specialist available
at TOWER Insurance that you
can call to discuss this cover with:
Alan Hendersonon 0800 477 466

three regions include some widely
recognised and talented bowlers

thrilling event not to be missed.
The Black Jacks members that are
available, have all been slotted in to
a regional squad which will provide
some invaluable experience for the up
and coming bowlers and give them a
chance to play with and against the

COACHING IS THE KEY
This year we have taken a different
approach to training new coaches with
new resources and dedicated Coach
Trainers to deliver the courses. Those
Coach Trainers have done a great job
during the off season and since they
were trained in May, 74 new coaches
have attended training courses and 303
coaches have been updated.
Thank you Ann Muir, Howard
Sandler, Pat Bull, Dot Curry, Lorna Reeve,
Vickie McNamara, Sue Mairs, Kerry
Geertson, Josie Uren, Roger Munro and
Ruth Roberts for the work you have
done. The feedback from all the courses
has been extremely positive and it is
great to have so many new enthusiastic
coaches in our clubs.
Thanks also to Pauline in the office
for her reliable support and to all the
new and updating coaches for their keen
participation and willingness to help
other bowlers.
Last month we talked about ensuring
that bad technical habits are sorted early
in the season. The next stage is to work
on improving fundamental skills with
some repetitive drills such as those in
previous issues. Identify your weaknesses
and your strengths and practice them
both. Always use consistent, honest
measurement and keep a record of your
progress. Often players over estimate
the percentage of effective bowls they
actually play and when they first try
measuring and recording are shocked
by the real numbers and find all sorts of
excuses not to record a particular session
or even give up all together. Another
common trap is to stay in your comfort
zone and only practice or score those
drills that you do well.
Remember, for training to be really
effective it should be harder that the
game. Don’t be afraid to put yourself
under pressure by setting some tough
targets and measuring your progress
honestly.
IndividualPractice Firm Forcing Shot
The bowl speed for the first forcing shot is
less than the drive, giving greater control
during delivery.
Firm Forcing Drill:l Set up flapjacks or discs about 1 foot apart
on either side of the centre line.
l Place a mat on the centre line as an
obstacle 2-3m short of the target.
l The objective is to go close to but avoid
the obstacle mat and pass between the
target discs.
l Play at least 20 repititions on each hand.
l Count the bowls that pass between the
discs (and miss the mat).
l Record results each time and note
your progress.
l Over several sessions, practice all lengths
particularly the extremes.
Progression:l Bring guide discs closer together until they
are only a bowls width apart.
l Alter the position of the obstacle mat and
experiment with different bowl speeds.

BOWLERS SUPPORT THE HALBERG TRUST
The Halberg Trust in conjunction with Westpac Bank, put on a sports event for people with a disability. As the Halberg Trust is the official charity of Bowls NZ, we and several bowling clubs have got in behind to support this by providing the opportunity to “Have A Go at Lawn Bowls”.
The third in the series of Halberg Trusts’ Sport Opportunity events was held in August at the Pukekohe Bowls Stadium. Stacey Roche, Halberg Trust Sport Opportunity Advisor for Counties Manukau Sport said, “14 disabled people attended the event and all of whom thoroughly enjoyed it. This event was created so disabled people could ‘have a go’ at bowls in an inclusive and supportive environment.”
Bowls NZ Community Development Officer for Region 2, Steve Beel was part of the initiative and commends the club volunteers the Westpac team, who were “awesome and did a magic job on the night”.
Some games were ‘modified’ to enable everyone to participate and enjoy themselves. The work and effort that club members and all involved is greatly appreciated. The following is an excerpt of a letter received from one of the player’s parents:
“What an amazing event you and your team of volunteers put together. The commitment and generosity from people who have never met Ngatuhi or I was overwhelming. The Westpac staff, who travelled down to Pukekohe
and got involved, the expertise,
skill and patience of the bowling
community, were incredible. I
was pleasingly surprised at how
comfortable people were around
my son as this is not always the
case. He was absolutely thrilled to
receive the player of the day prize.
He very rarely wins anything. His
comment when his name was called
out was “Finally at last I actually won
something”. He was very proud,
took his shirts, hat and drink bottle
to school the next day to show
everybody.
Roche also delivered a training
seminar called “Count Me In” to the
Westpac and Bowls volunteers, that
opened a few eyes about attitudes
and stereotyping.
Bowling clubs can take a lesson
from this event. It proved that
anyone can play bowls when you
apply common sense, have an open
mind to the possibilities, be prepared
to adapt rules to enable and just
be a good citizen to create the
opportunity for all people to enjoy
the great game of bowls.
There are huge opportunities
for clubs to engage their local
communities, including those
community members with a disability
to enjoy bowls and the bowling club.
If you want to know more contact
you CDO or Sports Opportunity
Office at your local Regional Sports
Trust.
You helped New Zealanders with
a disability participate in sport…
THANK YOU!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
MEMBERSHIPAllan Griffiths Bowls NZ Events [email protected] 021 966 024
PLURAL
One of the most common questions
revolves around Plural Membership.
There are quite a number of players
who for reasons of their own wish
to be members of more than one
club, sometimes in different Centre’s,
and this often creates confusion as
to what they can play in and what
they can’t play in. My advice is to
make yourself totally conversant
with Bowls New Zealand Regulation
5 before you become a member of
more than one club.
Clause 2 clearly states that
Individual Members of Bowls NZ can
be Members of more than one club in
a Centre or more than one club from
different Centre’s. Clause 2.3 also
states that such players shall only play
for one club in the National Interclub
Tournament and must notify their
clubs in writing which club it is they
are going to represent.
Where many players get confused
is they think ALL interclub is part of
the National Interclub competition
and this is of course not so. All
Centre’s run Interclub competitions
which are purely their own domestic
competitions and have their own
Conditions of Play.
Clause 3 refers to Club
Championships. If you have Plural
Membership in more than one club
in your Centre then you cannot play
in the same disciplines in each of
those clubs but you can play different
disciplines in each club.eg: You cannot
play singles, pairs, triples or fours in
both clubs but you can play singles
in one club and pairs in another club
and so on.
If however you are a member
of two clubs from different Centre’s
then you can play all disciplines in
both clubs. HOWEVER if the Centre
Champion-of-Champion events in
the Centre’s are being played at the
same time in both Centre’s and you
have won the same discipline in both
Centre’s then you must represent the
Centre in which you first won the said
discipline.
Clause 4 states that a Playing
Member can only represent one
club in any season in the Bowls NZ
National Interclub.
Clause 5 refers to Inter-centre
selection. A playing member shall only
be selected to represent and play for
a Centre in the Bowls New Zealand
National Inter-centre if they are a
playing member of a club within that
Centre BUT in the case of a Playing
Member being a member of clubs
in different Centre’s then they shall
only play for the Centre in which they
have played in the Bowls NZ National
Interclub.

BOWLS NZ EVENTS CALENDAR

NZ Disabled Bowls Inc
In October, New Zealand Disabled
Bowls recently had the pleasure of
hosting the Korean Disabled Bowls
team in a Friendly International Test
Series in Christchurch. The event was
held at the Canterbury Bowling Club
over three days with nine players in
each team competing in a mixture of
triples, pairs and singles matches.
Disabled bowls players disabilities
always vary greatly, Amputees,
Wheelchair Users, Brain Injury, Polio
and many others, all competing on a
level playing field to a high standard.
At the end of the first day’s play
New Zealand had taken a lead of 4
wins to Korea’s 3 and 1 was match
drawn. Day two followed in much
the same vein with some hard fought
close matches ending in; New Zealand
5 Wins, Korea 5 Wins and 1 match
drawn.
Unfortunately, the Canterbury
weather got the better of us and
washed out the final day’s play but
not the players spirits. At the farewell
dinner presentation New Zealand
was declared the overall winner with
9 wins and 2 draws to Korea’s 8 wins
and 2 draws.
NZ Disabled Bowls fielded a
relatively inexperienced international
team as we are building towards
the IWAS (international wheelchair
and amputee sports) Championships
in 2010 and the IBD (International
Bowls for the Disabled) World
Championships in South Africa 2011.
We are absolutely delighted
with the performances of our fresh
new faces and are confident of
continued growth and improvement.

We would also like to take
this opportunity to thank Maurice

President and the Club Members for
their fantastic support and assistance
in the organising and running of the
event.

There is not a great deal that can
be said about defaults, they are not
governed by the Controlling Body nor
the appointed Controller or Umpire
of an event. They are the sole domain
of a team or player not meeting
their commitments on the day for
whatever reason that is important to
them. A default is valid only for that
game which the player or the team
have advised the Controller of the
day, or in a team’s absence by the
Controller of the day.
Usually tournaments or events
are a series of games, if a team or
a player advises they will default
the first game or any other game in
that event they may resume playing
without penalty in the next (not
a subsequent) round. Controlling
Bodies must not introduce another
team into the event to cover for a
defaulting team or player unless they
have advised the Controlling Body
of their withdrawal from the event
prior to the draw being completed.
If the Controlling Body decides to
introduce a replacement team or
player into the event thus avoiding a
bye they are required to do another
draw. This action can be the subject of
dissatisfaction from players who were
placed in the original published draw.
The outcome of a late withdrawal/
default after the draw published is
that the Controlling Body is required
to award the opposition team or
player a win or even two, if there
is more than one default correctly
notified to the Controlling Body.
However in Side games there is
provision to be found in Law 46.2.2
for the game to continue minus the
absent player with the adjustment
(deduction of one quarter of the
defaulting teams score) made to the
final score to allow for team members
playing a next bowl each.
With the adoption of the New
Laws, the liberal introduction of the
changed Practice Law (13) allows a
team to Practice (as many ends as they
like) if they have a bye, which goes a
considerable way to negate the lack
of a competition game in that round.
The only references to defaults in
the Laws are Law 1.3,3. Which reads-
Defaulting, Player, Team or Side:
the player, team or side that does not
meet the requirements of any specific
Law or Laws.
And Law 46 which focuses on
lateness and eligible players like in a
graded team playing a graded three
as lead.
In Regulation Three App 1–Draws
and Byes it is to be noted that in a
two life draw allowance is made for a
defaulting player or team.
