UPSI AFR Trial Wales v Italy, 11/03/2018

Martin Innes and Bethan Davies

Aims

• Run a replication of the Euston Trial (on a budget)

• Systematically test the ‘hit rate’ of the technology

• Explore which factors impact the technology • E.g. props, walking speed, walking direction,

‘custody’ images

Methods

• 7 volunteers • Multiple ‘walk-throughs’ under

various conditions (90+)• Different walking speeds, different

directions • Props

• Scarf • Glasses• Winter hat • Cap• Headscarf (women) / Moustache (men)

• Recorded times and compared against csv file post-event

Hit rate & images

•76% (including 1st ‘stroll’ column which seemed to have unusually high number of misses – not sure why)

•81% (not including 1st column)

Gaps

• We have not tested:• Ethnicity • Low light • Weather • Controlled environment

• We suspect seasonal variation• Changing watchlist size and composition

Conclusions

• Very high hit rate 76%+ • Bad ‘custody’ images are a problem – they impact the ability to

pick people up • Our props impacted the scores we saw

• Generally, lower scores when wearing the props• Pulling the cap down could obscure the face enough to be missed• Glasses that obscured the eyes didn’t work – e.g. sunglasses • These could be problematic in the summer
