UPTIME BULLETIN A Newsletter from SPE, a Division of Dell EMC For Unity//SC/VNX/VNXe Q2

VOLUME 29 June, 2019

Windows 10 or Windows Server version 1903 may cause loss of access to SMB shares on Unity Dell EMC has recently become aware of an incompatibility between Unity software 4.2 (and lat-er) and Windows 10/Windows Server version 1903 such that users may encounter the error below when trying to access an SMB share:

Windows cannot access “\\servername” check the spelling… Error code 0x80004005 Unspeci-fied Error.

A change in Windows 10/Windows Server version 1903 is causing an SMB communication is-sue with Unity systems running a SMB dialect of SMB 3.1.1. See DTA 534173 or KB article 533696 for the latest information about this incompatibility, along with the work-around instruc-tions and the latest fix information.

Dell EMC Unity OE versions 4.2.x.x through 4.5.1.x are affected. VNX and VNXe are not im-pacted, as SMB 3.1.1 is not yet supported on these platforms.

A work-around is provided in the DTA and KB article which explains how to modify the Dell EMC Unity dialect to SMB version 3.0.2. This modification does require that all SMB server shares be disconnected/reconnected in order to renegotiate the appropriate new dialect based upon the parameter value. Alternatively, if max dialect 3.1.1 is required, customers can either back-rev their Windows 10 installations to the previous GA version (1803) or contact Dell EMC sup-port to request the hotfix.

Unity OE 5.0.x will prevent some extraneous end-of-life errors which may be erroneously reported for certain SSDs Inappropriate end-of-life (EOL) Alerts may be seen by customers for certain SSDs.

Alerts, dial homes, and SRs get created with an associated KB depending on the error message seen. Unity OE 5.0.x (expected GA date of 6/27) will help eliminate these inappropriate warning messages which result in unnecessary drive replacements.

Did you know?

On May 14, 2019, Intel shared information about a new group of vulnerabilities collectively called Microarchitectural Data Sam-pling (MDS). Dell is working closely with Intel to release securi-ty updates to address any vulnera-bilities and help customers ensure

the security of the data and sys-tems. Dell EMC urge customers to review this KB article 533910 for impact on Dell EMC products.

The SC40 reached its final End of Tech Support life worldwide on May 31, 2019. This triggered the end of development for all SCOS 6.x versions. Starting June 1,

2019, SC Engineering will no long-er provide software updates for any SCOS 6.x version. Engineer-ing support for any systems run-ning SCOS 6.x versions will be limited and the recommendation will be to upgrade to the latest SCOS version available.

Saving your controller serial cable for your SC system may greatly improve your time to resolution for serious issues In an effort to expedite the diagnosis and resolution of issues you may encounter on your SC system it is recommended you locate and keep your controller serial cable in a easily accessible location. This may include tie wrapping the cable to the backside of your rack. If you cannot locate the cable that shipped with your system please contact Dell support.

Specific cable part numbers and cable/system compatibilities are identified below.

New drive firmware improves drive reliability for certain SSDs under low IO conditions The current Unity_Drive_Firmware_Package detailed in KB 490700 contains new drive firmware QC4F for certain SSDs, part numbers: 005052379, 005052380, 005052377, and 005052378. This QC4F firmware addresses a very corner case condition where, under very low IO conditions, an SSD would not run periodic drive wear algorithms. It is recom-mended to update your drive firmware and Unity OE to 5.0.x as mentioned above to prevent misleading, false failures.

Dell EMC Unity/VNX/VNXe target versions DELL EMC has established target revisions for each product to ensure stable and reliable environments. As a best practice, DELL EMC recommends that you operate at target code levels or above to benefit from the latest enhancements and fixes available. Connectrix Integration CloudIQ now includes details about Connectrix systems. This provides administrators and trust-ed advisers better visibility into their SAN infrastructure and offers users more insight about overall SAN health, configuration, perfor-mance and capacity information for Connectrix B-Series products (running FOS 8.2.1a or above) and Connectrix MDS Series products (running NX-OS 8.3(2) or above). To enable Connectrix data collec-tion, you must first deploy and con-figure the CloudIQ Collector vApp which is accessed directly from CloudIQ.

Redesigned Overview Page for Ease of Use and Greater Productivity We’ve redesigned the Overview tiles to allow more detailed access to information without needing to navigate away from the Overview page. In addition to adding more detail within the tiles, we have made many of the tiles interactive to support viewing detailed infor-mation in context, to streamline access to pertinent information by reducing the number of clicks re-quired.

Updated Performance Anomaly Design: We've updated the way that performance anomalies are dis-played. The color scheme has been changed to make anomalies easier to distinguish from performance im-pacts. Additionally, we have increased the marker size on the most extreme point in an anomaly so that slight anomalies are easier to identify.

Unity System Port and Cache Metrics Added to the Metrics Browser: We’ve added system port and cache metrics for Unity systems to the Metrics Browser. This allows you to view all of the Unity system performance metrics in one place.

Pools View Updated to include PowerMax Storage Resource Pools: We've added PowerMax and VMAX storage resource pools to the global Pools View in CloudIQ.

Are you interested in CloudIQ? You can get access if you have an active support contract and your Unity array is connected via Dell EMC Secure Remote Services. Please see KB 481102 for information on CloudIQ and how to connect with Dell EMC Secure Remote Services.
