Welcometo Upton Junior School

Our aim is, at all times, to ensure that every child makes the most ofhis or her abilities. Success is a great motivator and all children havethe right to enjoy success.

All children have strengths. These can readily be seen in academicachievement or in artistic, musical, dramatic and sporting success.Equal to these are the abilities which help us to excel as people. Weaim to create a calm yet highly stimulating environment, within whichevery child can feel secure and grow in self-confidence, gaining thenecessary personal, social and academic life-skills to succeed in arapidly changing world - whilst never forgetting the vital importanceof such "traditional values" as courtesy and thought for others.

We hope that Upton Junior School stands at the centre of thecommunity. The school is well-known in the community for its heatedindoor swimming pool, which is used by many other local schools andorganisations. The school playing fields are used by our children, and many sports groups. The partnership between home, school andthe wider community is integral to the success of Upton and wewholeheartedly believe in working together for the benefit ofour children.

We are a place of LearningThe ten subjects making up the primary curriculum are either taught separately ifappropriate or are integral to the cross-curricular themes. Most work is planned termlygiving each year group a broad basis for incorporating national requirements and allowingappropriate topic work to develop in individual classes. Outlines of the work planned andrelevant information are circulated to parents each term.

All children receive tuition in the National Curriculum subjects. The core subjects of English,Mathematics and Science take up about 75% of the National Curriculum time available.

To ensure the curriculum stimulates and engages pupils, learning is brought to life beyondthe four walls of the classroom. Outside speakers, theatre companies and trips out ofschool all play their part to fulfil our aim to make sure the curriculum is relevant andinspiring for all our pupils.

We're a highly successful junior school in the South East of England;we combine a broad, challenging and high-quality education withexcellent pastoral care and extra-curricular opportunity. As aresult, we take great pride in our young people and what we helpthem to achieve, and they develop into confident, well-manneredand responsible individuals who respect others, the school andtheir environment.

We measure the success ofwhat we do not just in academicachievement - although results inthe national tests at 11 areconsistently well above nationalaverages - but in the atmosphere we foster, the care we take of each child and theopportunities we extend to all. Our aim is to educate thepupil in the broadest sense, offering a firm foundation forlife, a challenging but safe environment and a strongcommunity spirit.

We run our own Breakfast Club from 7:50am each day and offer a variety of After SchoolChildcare options.

Being Healthyat Upton

All the children learn about healthy food in a number of ways, for example through growing vegetables in theschool vegetable garden, making sandwiches and bread or learning about how a balanced diet makes us healthy. We also run a fruit shop at morning break supplying healthy snacks. Lunchtime is part of the whole schoolexperience and children are taught to behave with consideration and good manners at all times.

We hold a Healthy Schools Award and certainly a key and integral part of our success in achieving this awardis because of our quality school meals that we produce in-house. We provide pupils with a home cooked twocourse meal with a vegetarian option always available. For those pupils wishing to have a packed lunch weencourage parents to provide a lunch that is healthy and sensible. Our in-house catering team also offer apacked lunch service.

So, for those of you those don’t feel like making up your child’s packed lunch at home why not let us do it for you.

Parents, Carers and StaffWorking TogetherAtUpton, we know that the key factor in determining a child’s success in school life is to forge a longstanding and strong partnership withparents. We expect our parents to share in their child’s learning journey.

We regularly invite parent, carers, even grandparents into our school be it to watch an assembly, join us for lunch, attend a parental consultationevening, a ‘meet and greet’ session or just an informal viewing of your child’s work. Parents/carers are welcome to assist the teaching staff on avoluntary basis. We have several volunteers who give a few hours every week to help in this way with activities such as listening to reading, anextra pair of hands in practical lessons or talking with a small group of pupils.

We have a thriving Parent, Teachers and Friends Association which has two aims:-• to foster more extended relationships between staff, parents andothers associated with the school, and

• to engage in activities which support theschool and advance the educationof the pupils attending it.

Regular events are organised to raisefunds for the school as well as toprovide opportunities for socialising.Planning and helping at theseevents provides parents, staff andothers with a good way of gettingto know each other better.

“The school always informs you of activities and achievements and there is always something to get involved with.”Parents feedback to Ofsted July 2010
