Spring 2014 Newsletter A Home of Hope Annette Daniels feels like she has gone from rags to riches. She’s always wanted a home for her family, however, being on disability and her current income have made it difficult for her dream to become a reality. In a matter of two months, all of that changed. “My neighbor connected me to the Urban Hope rental program at the beginning of this year and we moved in March. Would you believe that our new home is bigger and cost less than what we were paying for a two-bedroom apartment?” She continues, “Urban Hope has been so good to us. They have worked with me on my budgeting and getting my credit report up to speed so I can be a home owner. I would love for this to turn into an option to buy!” For Annette and her family, this new home is much more than “a big beautiful kitchen” with three bed- rooms, a front porch and laundry room. “The best part is my backyard. Having it fenced in means a lot, especially with a four year-old running around.” Annette’s 14 year old daughter, Donnisha, agrees with her mom. “It’s nice because our house is so much bigger than what we used to have.” Donnisha is also quick to note that she is excited to have her own room and decorate it in One Direction posters. “Niall is my favorite!” In many ways, life has gotten easier for the Daniels family. Annette notes that Donnisha is doing “very well” as a freshman at Church Hill Academy — learning practical tools such as cooking and wood- working at CHAT. She even likes cooking for the family from time to time. Annette is hopeful for the future. “I’m so grateful to have this home. Through all the hardships, I never gave up, and I didn’t lose my hope. Urban Hope has reminded me that God answers prayers.” She continues, “My children love it and I love it. This is the best thing that’s happened to all of us.” You can help other families like Annette’s experience a home full of hope. A Home of HopeAnnette Daniels feels like she has gone from rags to riches.

I would love for this to turn into an option to buy!”

For Annette and her family, this new home is much more than “a big beautiful kitchen” with three bed-rooms, a front porch and laundry room. “The best part is my backyard. Having it fenced in means a lot, especially with a four year-old running around.”

In many ways, life has gotten easier for the Daniels family. Annette notes that Donnisha is doing “very well” as a freshman at Church Hill Academy — learning practical tools such as cooking and wood-working at CHAT. She even likes cooking for the family from time to time.

Volunteer Spotlight Swift Creek Presbyterian ChurchEven though Swift Creek Presbyterian Church is located in Midlothian, the congregation has been a faithful presence in Church Hill over the last few years. Dedicated to their mission of loving God and their neighbors as themselves, members have gotten involved with multiple organizations dedicated to serving Church Hill including Blue Sky Fund, CHAT, and Urban Hope.

Rev. Tuck Knupp has encouraged the Swift Creek community to use their gifts, talents, and skills to serve. From this seemingly simple act, their volunteer partnership has been a blessing for Urban Hope and its residents. Dozens of volunteers painted rooms and helped remodel a bathroom floor for one resident. Parents, youth, and retirees have spent weekends fixing locks, hanging mirrors and scraping old paint away. And a Swift Creek volunteer recently landscaped a yard with new shrubs and flowers for Annette Daniels (see front page story).

“I love seeing multi-generational teams serving together as a church body,” says Administrative Director, Ashley Hall. “That is the very essence of showing God’s love to Church Hill and the surrounding community.”

Urban Hope is looking for volunteers and will even provide lunch! To find out about Urban Hope’s financial needs and volunteer opportunities, contact Ashley Hall at [email protected].
