Fraunhofer is making a central contribution toward securing the future of German

industry and commerce by continuing to develop effi ciency technologies for a wide

and diverse range of sectors. IT applications are the linchpin of almost all business

processes and products and, in this age of the information society, it is hard to imagine

how we would live and work without them. I am pleased to say that many of these

products are based around Fraunhofer know-how. The most prominent examples are

the mp3 compression technique developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated

Circuits IIS and the H.264/MPEG-4-AVC compression standard for video applications

created by the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut, HHI,

these being what lend our smartphones the intelligence and user-friendliness we’ve

come to expect as standard these days. How do we go about protecting our data and

processes, some of which are very sensitive? And how can we analyze unstructured

amounts of data quickly? This major topic is also one that Fraunhofer is busy addres-

sing, under the caption “Big data”, thus ensuring cloud technology users won’t get

left out in the cold. Come and visit us in the CeBIT lab in Hall 9. Our scientists from

14 different Fraunhofer units will be happy to show you our latest solutions at the

world’s most important trade fair for information and communication technology.

Sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Reimund Neugebauer

President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

Every spring for more than 25 years, the information and communication technology

sector has gathered in Hannover for the CeBIT trade fair, making this fi ve-day event

the world’s most important stage for presenting digital solutions. The central topics

featured at CeBIT 2013 will be Big Data and networking. The heartbeat of the inter-

national fair is loudest in the CeBIT lab in Hall 9, which concentrates all relevant sub-

ject areas and in 2012 attracted over 100,000 visitors. The CeBIT lab is also home to

the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft booth, which this year will feature 31 exhibits. These

exhibits are divided up into the different subject zones of Data district, Community

interface, Media world, Health park, and Training zone. Fraunhofer will offer a glimpse

behind the scenes of its research and present the innovations of tomorrow and visions

for life in the future.

DATA DISTrIcT

Cloud computing, the social web and the growing spread of information technology

are offering companies a host of valuable information, but are not necessarily offering

effective ways of using it. Quick analysis of large amounts of unstructured data

(Big Data) is understandably a hot topic at this year’s CeBIT. Big Data solutions provide

companies with a whole range of possibilities. Evaluating customer reviews posted

on Internet forums is a key area, as such insights allow companies to improve their

products considerably more quickly than before.Another important aspect of proces-

sing large amounts of data is visualizing the data. Visualization can help companies

pick up on trends ahead of the competition and to use available information to better

determine which course of action to take. The American information technology

research and advisory company Gartner expects that this year in this area, Big Data

will account for 28 billion euros of worldwide IT expenditures. As a response,

Gartner expects to see 4.4 million new jobs created in this area by 2014.

Companies and public administrations are attaching increasing importance to mobile

applications and concepts such as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). Employees that are

able to use their own personal devices – mostly smartphones – at work are often more

motivated. But BYOD runs smoothly only when clear security standards are established.

Fraunhofer IAIS is offering the right concepts to do just that.

In the future, mobile devices will also be the most important interfaces for cloud ser-

vices. BITKOM, the German Association for IT, Telecommunications and New Media,

expects revenues from cloud services to rise to 17.1 billion euros by 2016.

This represents an increase of 222 percent over 2012.

Today, more than half of the world’s population is already living in cities. The

Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has responded quickly to make the city of tomorrow a priority,

leading to the development of the »Morgenstadt« initiative. Within »Morgenstadt«,

numerous Fraunhofer Institutes share their visions and expertise, forming a network of

innovation capable of creating dynamic support for public and private industry inves-

tors. The goal is to develop sustainable solutions that create effi ciency in the face of

challenges posed by climate change, the scarcity of resources, or the demographic

shift.

Overcoming these challenges starts with urban planning. As new technologies seem

to emerge almost on top of each other, there is less time to spend on each individual

planning stage. Traffi c planners can counter this by utilizing 3D visualization systems

that make situations accessible more quickly. Additional information can be incorpo-

rated, step by step, into projections of these situations. For instance, it is possible to

simulate the build-up of dust particles under various conditions, or to determine the

noise level of a new airport runway.

The city of the future dynamic is one of fast administrative processes, and many of

these processes and data have to be particularly well protected. Fraunhofer FOKUS

offers effi cient solutions and in helping found the Cybersecurity Demonstration Center

(CDC) has succeeded in creating an environment capable of simulating internal and

external attacks on IT networks. This allows researchers to fi nd gaps in security and

create the conditions necessary to close these gaps once and for all.

Digital media are having an ever-stronger impact on our daily lives. We put our favorite

tunes on our smartphones and can even enjoy them in 5.1 surround sound, thanks to

High Effi ciency Audio Coding. We are experiencing growing opportunities to search

vast media archives, and compare and edit what we fi nd, just as we can also use our

facial expressions to interact with our devices.

At the moment in our multimedia society, video transmission is proving particularly im-

portant. The H.264/MPEG-4-AVC compression standard, developed by Fraunhofer HHI,

is now found on every iPhone and is available on a total of more than a billion devices.

And people are using it, too. In November 2012, market research institute GfK deter-

mined that 52 percent of Germans watch videos online at least once a week and that

13 percent even do this every day to keep themselves up to date. The next step in this

process is the HEVC Real-Time Decoder designed for streaming videos in high defi nition.

HEVC compression cuts the amount of data required in half compared to the H.264

standard, offering a noticeable improvement in transmission for video conferences

and chats.

Fraunhofer IIS researchers transformed the music world in the mid-90s by developing

mp3. Today, mobile devices are showing movies in high defi nition to the delight of the

digital society. This means that Fraunhofer‘s renown in the world of media is greater

now than ever before.

Mix-ups in hospitals are every patient’s nightmare. Many hospitals implement checklists

in an attempt to minimize the risk of mistakes, but the division of preoperative tasks

remains complex and time per patient is always tight. The right software could save

staff from bulky patient fi les and making critical errors.

Optimized communication between ambulances and hospitals is leading to more com-

prehensive care for at-risk patients. Within hospitals themselves, there are programs

contributing to better analysis of lab reports and improved doctors’ response times.

A “smart hospital” also benefi ts those in their controlling departments. Operation and

treatment times, as well as details of how long medical devices are used, can all be

logged using RFID, making bookkeeping easier and more precise.

But electronic health technology is proving popular outside hospitals, too; especially

among the elderly who now make up over 20 percent of the German population.

Domestic emergency call systems are a simple and cost-effective way of giving older

people a greater sense of safety in their own homes.

Fraunhofer IIS developed the GEWOS mobility chair especially to help older people

keep fi t and mobile. Instead of looking like it belongs in the gym, this chair is designed

to look like a normal piece of living-room furniture. It is equipped with health and fi t-

ness functions, allowing, for example, vitals such as pulse rate or blood pressure to be

read and displayed at any time.

For natural scientists particularly interested in practical applications, there is no better

destination than the 60 Fraunhofer Institutes. This is where young scientists learn

the fundamental principles of industry while maintaining their expert connections.

HR services company Randstad named Fraunhofer as Germany’s most attractive em-

ployer in 2012; in deciding who would win the top spot, 7800 employees evaluated

Germany’s 150 largest employers. They gave their marks in ten categories, ranging

from job security to the atmosphere at work.

Personnel development is important in ensuring such praise. The Fraunhofer Academy

offers a comprehensive program of further education comprising part-time courses of

study, certifi cate courses, and seminars, thereby stimulating innovative ideas across a

broad spectrum of topics ranging from energy to IT to management.

Companies that favor further training opportunities tailored to their particular needs

fi nd what they are looking for at the Fraunhofer Academy. And for anyone wanting to

study while on the move, the iAcademy learning platform – available from the App

Store – provides an introduction into a contemporary further education program.
