Our mission: compassion and wholeness. Compassion means meeting immediate needs (food, shelter, transportation). Wholeness means meeting long-term community needs (education, health and wellness, neighborhood revitalization and economic development). Will you join us? Urban Ministry has provided programs of compassion and wholeness to inner-city Birmingham for 36 years, and we have served the West End Community for nearly 25 years. We still have a long way to go to address the great needs in our community: high rates of poverty, unemployment, poverty-related health problems, lack of resources, and a lack of opportunities for our children. To transform our surroundings - to interrupt the cycle of poverty - we need to work together. Find out how << you can make a difference here in Birmingham. Join us. The Joe Rush Center for Urban Mission connects volunteers to revitalize inner-city communities by painting houses for low-income homeowners. Our dorm facility, located at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church in nearby Midfield, hosts work groups and mission teams for week-long service camps.

The Community Kitchen serves a hot lunch daily from 12-1 p.m.Our homelessness prevention social worker connects visitors to the HMIS Continuum of Care system and other services.

Urban Kids offers after-school and summer learning programming for kids in grades 3 through 8. We provide academic assistance, arts and cultural enrichment, healthy living support and mentorship. Contact us at 781-0517 for details on enrolling your children free of charge.

Emergency Care includes utility, food and transportation assistance. Our social workers provide case management for low-income seniors (60+) and families at risk of homelessness. We also connect clients to Christmas assistance and other programs.

West End (WE) Community Gardens grows healthy food and healthy community by employing young people from the West End Community in green jobs and leadership training, hosting free community gardening classes and festivals, and making fresh affordable produce available in a food desert.

Growing together. It is our vision that when our programs create compassion and wholeness, those who serve and are served will continue our mission, growing our circle of compassion and creating a healthy, whole community.
