WHO ARE WE

w/purpose is a creative design studio curious about our built environment and its future. For us, this means neighborhoods and buildings; the experience of our streetscapes; or the spaces where people shop or spend their time.

We are a studio that explores the interrelationships between those elements, their meaning, and how to make them better. Our focus and capabilities lie in delivering urban and public design services. Our “bring people to design” portfolio includes urban development, city bus stops, affordable housing design, public park folly’s, art Installations, neighborhood branding, and private residence .

Our way of working has earned us a reputation for being collaborators and innovators in the areas of architecture and urban design. Our expertise with materials, advanced manufacturing processes, and project execution has given us an opportunity to deliver “newness” to our partners and clients. You would select our office in a design capacity because the deliverable will be site specific, one of a kind, and with purpose.

W/purpose has developed a unique product in architecture for clients who believe that good design can make a difference in both their lives and in the lives of others. The power to impact communities through design fuels its founder Wil Marquez and the projects his office commits to. This creative studio has established a reputation for not just thinking about design- but making it happen through the organizations and minds they lead. Their expertise lies in finding plausible, yet nontraditional solutions for developments, architecture, public art, and learning environments through a collaborative practice they define as “creative play”- a unique process of collaborative programming meets big picture thinking.

Since 2005, we have had the pleasure of providing design and related services to Borshoff, Cripe, YMCA Indianapolis, Bicycle Garage Indy, BWI Development, Future Farm Workers of America, City of Evansville, ECHO Housing Corporation, Urbanofile, People For Urban Progress, Indianapolis City Market, King Park Area Development Corporation, Engaging Solutions, Mid-Town Corporation and more.

Wil Marquez’s work uses innovative design principles to probe ideas of public space, architecture, and equity. He is enthusiastic about new ways design professionals can contribute to curious, meaningful, and stimulating environments. Marquez brings a wealth of experience in architecture and urban design to the table. He holds a Masters degree in architecture from the University of Michigan and has lead and collaborated on a number of focused installations, urban strategies, and architectural projects in Indianapolis Evansville, and beyond. Marquez was selected as an Emerging Voice of Design by the Design Arts Society of Indianapolis Museum of Art in 2010 and was listed as a Top 10 person to watch by Indy Star in 2013. Most recently, his studio work was highlighted in Actar Publishing, Total Latin American Architecture.

w/purpose has highlighted the positive and physical consequences of integrating art, architecture, community, and terrain into highly visual possibilities. Often this comes in the form of fabricated projects, development documents, creative processes, commissions, publications, or stories. Stakeholder engagement comes to the forefront through w/purpose’s "bring people to design" philosophy. Recognizing the importance of public buy-in for the decision making process, w/purpose fosters a “co-authored” position with professionals, developers, fabricators, directors, artists, & agencies.

w/purpose has proven track record of collaboration with clients such as YMCA Indianapolis, Borshoff, IndyGo, LISC Indianapolis, BWI Development, City of Evansville, Future Farm Workers of America, Indianapolis Art Council, ECHO Housing Corp. , Midtown Indianapolis, St. Vincent Center for Children & Families, and many other.

“WIl Marquez is an energetic designer, not only of built space but of relationships. He has a remarkable ability to connect people of like interests, allowing new projects to take root and flourish. In only a few years in Indianapolis he is already connected to a vast assortment of people from different fields and at varying levels of experience, and uses his great positive energy to pull those people together for creative pursuits. Wil’s architecture and design projects are at the front edge of technology, while maintaining the human element that makes people enjoy them. Exactly the kind of “designer” we need.”

Donna Sink, Architect, MW Harris Architecture Interiors Design

“Wil Marquez is a remarkably talented and resourceful design entrepreneur. I knew Wil as a student at the University of Michigan, where he excelled in an urban research and design studio I taught that focused on Detroit. I have stayed in touch with Wil since and have worked with him on a number of projects. He is a truly inspiring collaborator and colleague.”

Michael Speaks, Dean of the University of Kentucky, College of Art and Design

“You’ve got to love Wil Marquez. It’s that simple. His energies, talents, designs . . . please note, everything with Wil is plural . . . his friends, dreams, beliefs. Indianapolis is and will be a better place to live, work, and visit because of Wil’s constant urgings directed to the city’s elected, educational, and cultural leaders, sent through his blogs and voiced at meetings. He understands Indianapolis as a real place where he knows people and neighborhoods that many have left behind. Wil not only refuses to turn away, he’s all involved, mentoring students, young persons who dream of college, and his college students as well, constantly seeking out opportunities for the young people he inspires. His design work breaks ground, inspires, and provides a view into our shared tomorrows.”

“As a colleague at Ball State University, he always made time to talk with my students and they inevitably came away better informed, asking better questions, and wanting more of Wil’s time, energy, and intelligence.”

At the center of the Midtown area is Maple Crossing and an 84-year-old building named The Concord. Situated at the northwest corner of 38th and Illinois streets, the 10,000 square-foot building has been the talk of the neighborhood for years.

In its past, The Concord was home to a cigar shop, drug store, ice cream shop, restaurant, and “a place to buy Cherry Cokes for 10 cents,” says a long-time resident. The building was once a destination that residents loved and and patronized. Until Midtown Indy purchased the building in 2016, it had been largely vacant for more than two decades leaving the two-story space neglected and in need of restoration.

Midtown Indy acquired the building to return it back to the people it used to serve — its neighbors. A series of listening sessions open to the public were organized to find out what the community needed and wanted to see happen in the space.

Since the building has been under renovation, passersby have come in and shared what they want to see next. The priorities identified by the community include the provision of basic groceries through a winter farmers market and/or the establishment of a concept grocer. Additionally, it was suggested to host a series of community-based supportive events such as a neighborhood museum or a competition-style program that supports local entrepreneurship.

Midtown Indy’s revitalization intent is in line with community’s requests and the building’s name — to bring concord and harmony back to an historic building and the communities it serves. The collaborative effort to restore the building is catalytic to the collective vision for the heart of Midtown at Maple Crossing.

Aspire House, is an 1897 landmark five miles from downtown Indianapolis. In danger of demolition; the building is being repurposed as a community space with a goal of moving this area from blight to revitalization.

The population in the area is primarily African American and mostly single. Thirty-one is the median age of residents. Nearly half of the residents have lived in their homes for at least five years. While the neighborhood surrounding the fire house has suffered business divestiture, is a food desert, with no access to basic neighborhood services; The 46208 zip code that it shares is home to notable employers/real estate. Butler University, Indianapolis Children’s Museum, Riverside Park, Ivy Tech Community College, Chritian Theological Seminary, Coffin Golf Course, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art, are its impressive neighbors.

Revitalizing this structure will serve at the catalyst for others to invest in this neighborhood. The Aspire House will unite the building’s owners, residents, local college art students and others to create a functunal building. The building’s abandoned contents will be artistically re-purposed into functional pieces. The first floor of the building will provide a creative space for arts and culture. The space will showcase art creations and installations that reflects the history of the Firehouse. The second and third floor of the buidling wil be residential units. This project encourages others interested in living in this revitalized neighborhood, to partner on projects that further develop the community; like using materials from renovated homes, up-cycling them into artistic pieces – with Aspire House leading the way to such collaborative works.

W/Purpose, LLC, was invited to work on the facade design and urban design for the $8.4 million senior housing project on the city’s North-East side. The “First Devington” development will replace the former Arlington Palms Apartments with a 48-unit complex for seniors 55 and older. The property features rain gardens, a walking trail, outdoor pavilion, media center and aquatic excercise pool.

The project, which was completed in the summer of 2013, was made possible by state and (LISC) Local Housing Redevelopment Incentives.

We listened and worked along side a communiity’s concerns on affordable housing, vibrancy, transit, crime and quickly came to the realization that certain kinds of affordable housing products require a team to become co-authors, not consultants, to a story that openly embrace design as a “turnaround” strategy.

This project is the visual and physical interplay for the type of divergent thinking w/purpose believes will shift the current affortable development ideology.

in 2015, w/purpose was invited as the facade design team for a new $13 Million dollar “retro” rehab intends to transform into the former Williamson Candy Factory into a 4-floor, mixed-use game changer for this N.E. Corridor Gateway.

The updated structure includes 49 affordable and market rate one and two bedroom apartments, an 1,800 square foot green roof, a furnished space for public events, an onsite fitness facility, and a job training center. The project was funded using QAP tax credits and is anticipated to inject new life into the surrounding neighborhood.

Early in the design of Overlook at the Fairgrounds, an important goal of the team was the careful preservation of the existing Homer J Williamson Candy Factory, all while introducing a bold, relevant, and compatible adaptive reuse and new construction project. As a theme, Overlook at the Fairgrounds new design needed to advance the rhythm and spirit of the existing Art Moderne factory. Early massings focused on long horizontal lines, unique roof lines, and forms that met the demands of an today’s urban living. In this way, the challenges of integration with the original 38th Street facade needed to do more than inspire a community, but instead, ensure a new development ideology would be established around historic preservation, public art, and community stabilization.

Early studies of the Williamson Factory, its transformation, and community advocacy was carried out by Indianapolis design studio w/purpose. Their adventurous and playful process teased out a number of new tastes and possible flavours for the former candy factory. It was clear listening to residents that the new Overlook at the Fairgrounds needed both a youthful kick and strong connection to infrastructure and quality of life elements. Its design had to speak to multiple contextual forces, urban elements, and speeds. The thrill of combining a new residential program with gateway status and historic preservation is what prompted the multiple iterations, roof forms, massings, and color studies before settling on a final design in January 2015.
