The UMI DIRECTORY brings you the currentstatus of the Congregation: addresses, telephonenumbers and E-mail IDs of our communities and a fewother details about our Congregation. Indeed theDIRECTORY is a source of immediate reference fornecessary information about our Congregation.
Our Institute, “Ursulines of Mary Immaculate ofPiacenza”, was founded by Brigida Morello of Jesus,beatified by His Holiness Pope John Paul II on 15th
March, 1998.
Brigida, with five companions, made her ReligiousProfession on 17th February 1649, which, in that year,was Ash Wednesday. Guided by the Jesuits, she gavea solid formation to her Daughters. Her Cristo-Centricspirituality is, to this day, the basis of her teaching.Blessed Brigida represented with a Crucifix in her hand,points to Christ as the only way to holiness.
With filial devotion, we dedicate this Directory to ourFoundress, Blessed Brigida of Jesus.

1882 10th November - Foundation of the House of Fidenza. The first houseopened after 233 years.Closed in November 1957
1910 27th December - Foundation of the House at Rapallo.
1919 15th October - Foundation of the House at Busseto. Closed in 1926.
1929 12th May - Foundation of the House for Retreats at Rezzanello (PC). Closedon 12th March 1991.
1930 24th July - Foundation of the House of Rome, dedicated to St. Joseph.School Community closed on 26th August 1998. Transformed into theGeneralate om 23rd September 1998
1934 12th November - Birth of the Indian mission. The first 5 Missionaries(Pioneers) - Mother Annunciata Rossetti, Mother Xavier Sabbadini,Mother Margaret Benocci, Mother Elena Valsecchi and Sr. AssuntaLusardi landed at Calicut, Kerala by the ship ‘Victoria.’

They settled in a temporary house at Calicut. They started working in aDispensary and visited the houses of the poor and needy. MotherAnnunciata Rossetti was the Superior of the Indian Mission.
1936 The Pioneers moved to Cannanore. They lived in a rented house and carriedon their apostolate in the neighbouring areas.
1938 Mother Margaret succeeded Mother Annunciata as Superior of the Mission.
1938 23rd November - Arrival of the 2nd group of Missionaries: Mother AgataBompard and Mother Adelaide Giuliani.
1939 19th March - Feast of St. Joseph, the first house was blessed at Payyambalam,Cannanore. It was well equipped for the future growth of the mission.
1939 With the gracious permission of His Holiness Pope Pius XI, the Novitiatewas opened at the Mother House at Cannanore. Mother Maria FrancescaXaveria Sabbadini was the first Novice Mistress.
The First two novices were Thresiamma Joseph [Sr. Felix] and MaryGonsalves [Sr. Josephine] who pronounced their vows on 8th December1942 at Cannanore.
The next Candidate was Gladys Vaz [Sr. Aloysia Vaz] who dedicated herlife to God on 16th July 1943 at Punchakad, Payyanur.
1943-1945 Internment of the Italian Sisters at Payyannur due to the 2nd WorldWar.
1943 Opening of the first mission home at Punchakkad, Payyanur under theguidance of Mother Margaret.
1948 4th November - Arrival of the 3rd group of Missionaries in India:Mother Stefania Murelli, Mother Luciana Perotti, Sr. Tomasina Pecci andMother Giovanna Saveria Alberoni.
1949 June - General Chapter in Italy. Mother Claudia Margherita Scarani waselected Superior General
1952 13th May - Mother Stephania Murelli took charge as the first Delegate ofthe Indian Mission succeeding of Mother Margaret Benocci who had beenSuperior of the mission till then.
1953 28th June - Birth of the Northern Indian Mission with the arrival ofMothers Stefania, Giovanna, Raffaella Scolletta and Srs. Thomasina andRosa at Kanpur. 8th August - Opening of the first house: St. Patrick’sConvent at Cantonment, Kanpur.
1953 20th October - Mother Claudia Scarani, the Superior General, visited theIndian Mission, the fist General to do so after 19 years of its existence.

1957 13th June - Foundation of the House at Cologna Veneta. In a few months,on 11th Nov., also the House of Alte Ceccato was opened. The latter wasclosed on 15th July 1978. Both Houses are in the Diocese of Vicenza.
1957 25th July - Sr.Celine Kananaikal, died 25 days after her first Profession.She was the first Indian Sister to be called by the Lord to her heavenlyreward.
1957 11th November Opening of the House at Alte Ceccato. Closed on 15th July1978
1960 1st May - the Convent at St. Andrea was opened, in the Diocese of Vicenza.The crèche is still functioning, directed by a Sister from the Cologna VenetaCommunity, though the convent was closed on 30th June 1997
1960 31st July - Foundation of the House at Alghero (Sardegna), in the Dioceseof Alghero - Bossa.
1961 August - General Chapter in Italy. Mother Stefania Murelli and MotherAloysia Vaz attended the Chapter.
1965 Purchase of the House at Borno (Brescia). Summer holidays House
1967 August - General Chapter in Italy. Mother Stephania Murelli, MotherMargaret Benocci and Sr. Emmanuela Saldanha represented the IndianDelegation. Mother Anna Margherita Bianchi was elected Superior General.She officially introduced the cause of Beatification of our Foundress.
1970 1st - 29th August - a special Chapter convened at Rezzanello to updatethe Constitutions demanded by the Motu Proprio “Ecclesiae Sanctae.”
1971 April - Mother Aloysia Vaz succeeded Mother Stefania Murelli as DelegateSuperior. She is the first Indian Delegate Superior.
1973 August - General Chapter in Italy. Indian Delegation was representedby Mother Aloysia Vaz, Mother Giovanna, Sr. Anna Margharita, Sr. Letiziaand Sr. Alphonsa, who substituted Mother Stefania who was ill at thetime.
1979 August - General Chapter in Italy. There were seven delegates fromIndia to participate in the Chapter. Mother Stefania Murelli was electedSuperior General. It was decided at this Chapter to have two Regions inIndia, South and North and to appoint the Regional Superiors: Sr. MonicaManikunnel and Sr. Alphonsa Thaiparambil respectively.
1980 January - the implementation of the new administrative structure underthe direction of the Delegate Superior.

1984 12th November - Golden Jubilee of our Indian Mission.
1985 August -60th General Chapter at Rezzanello, Italy. Mother Angela MarinaMagalini was elected Superior General and Mother Aloysia Vaz Asst.General. At this Chapter India was declared a Province. Mother GiovannaAlberoni was appointed the first Provincial Superior of the Indian Province.
1985. 13th March - Birth of the Brazil mission at Ponta Grossa, Paranà - Sr.Paula Tiramani, Sr. Carmela Sotgiu and Sr. Marisa Mundackal were thePioneers of this mission.
1988 15th August - the Indian Mission was organized into three Provinces:Southern, Central and Northern with Srs. Liliana Kandamkulathy, GiovannaAlberoni and Francesca Edattel as Provincial Superiors respectively.
1989 May - Italy was declared a Province with Mother Stefania Murelli as theProvincial Superior.
1990. 17th February - The Novitiate, which had started at Cannanore, 50 yearsago, was transferred to “NIVEDITA”, T.C. Palaya, Bangalore.
1991 1st – 25th August - 61st General Chapter at Piacenza, Italy. Sr. Angela
Marina Magalini was re-elected Superior General and Sr. BernardinaPoonthottam the Asst. General. At this Chapter, it was decided to have anEnlarged General Council Meeting in the middle of the Sessenium.
1991 A first House opened in a Syrian Diocese, Thrissur by the Northern Province,followed by 3 more Houses: In 1992 Palakad by the Southern Province; in1993, Aluva by the Central Province; and in 2006 Kanhiradukam, by theSouthern Province.
1993 11th February - Transfer of the Generalate from Piacenza to Rome, ViaMonte Senario 57. A temporary Residence of the General Council. Closedon 27th July 1999.
1993 9 - 13th July - the first Enlarged General Council Meeting held at Piacenza
1997 3rd –28th August - The 62nd General Chapter held at Nivedita, Bangalore.This was the first time a General Chapter was held in INDIA. MotherGiovanna Alberoni was elected Superior General and Sr. BernardinaPoonthottam Asst. General.
1998 15th March - The BEATIFICATION of our Blessed Foundress BrigidaMorello of Jesus, in Rome by His Holiness Pope John Paul II.

2003 13th January - Birth of the Kenya mission at Matiri with Sr. Priya, Sr.Bennet and Sr. Rani Jose as Pioneers from the Northern Province.
2003 31st May -the Birth of Libya mission at El-Beida, Diocese of Benghazi atthe request of Propaganta Fides, with Srs. Prema, Sumya and Sheril asPioneers from the Southern Province.
2003 8th Aug - 3rd Sept. - Celebration of the 63rd General Chapter at theGeneralate, Rome and the election of Sr. Bernardina Poonthottam as thefirst Indian Superior General and Sr. Angela Marina Magalini as the Asst.General.
2004 12th November - 70th Anniversary (Sapthathi) celebrations of the U.M.IMission in India.
2004 3rd December - Erection of a VICE- PROVINCE carved out of the NorthernProvince with Sr. Carol Thundathil as its first Superior.
2006 8th September - Brazil mission declared a Delegation with Sr. YvonneFernandes as its first Superior.
2007 “Nivedita”, Bangalore, was opened in 1990, as a common Novitiate Housefor the three Indian Provinces.
Now it has been registered as a Trust, on 27th February, 2007 and isplaced under the direct jurisdiction of the Generalate. It is to be a Renewaland Spirituality Centre for our UMI Congregation.
2007 29th July - Sr. Celine Kananaikal was recognised by the Church asServant of God at the 50th year of her death at Kannur, Kerala. The processfor her Beatification has been initiated.
