In 1862 congress passed the Homestead

Act. This gave the head of the household the opportunity to get 160 acres of land out west. Many African Americans took this

offer post war.

Exoduster, name given to African Americans that took congresses

Oliver Kelley started the Patrons of

Husbandry. The organization fought

Grange, this was a name given to oliver

organization that wanted reform for education for farm

families.

1866 cowboys would transport large

Hicklok began. After 1880 he began to travel around and performing with

Buffalo Bills Wild West.

Settlement Houses was a social reform that tried to get the rich and poor more

closely related.

Republicans were given the name Mugwumps for supporting the

Democratic candidate.

In 1887, the Dawes Act was passed. The goal of the act was to try and Americanize

the Native Americans.

The Soddy Houses. These houses where

build out of blocks and turf. They were small fireproof houses that were build out west where no trees were

around to use.

In 1886, Samuel Grover lead the Cigar Makers Union. They

fought for better hours, pay, and

conditions.

Collective Bargaining, used to negotiate

better work conditions, pay, and

hours.

In 1886 the colored farmers alliance was started to help each other with the rising

cost of farming.

Haymarket Affairs, refers to the bombings

in chicago.

native Americans and murdered over 300

women and children.

In 1890, Sherman Antitrust Act, the act made it legal to make trust that interfered

with the free trade act.

would do a dance that they believed would

resurrect dead warriors.

that would combine unskilled and skilled

works.

1892 Scabs, people hired to keep the

factories that were dealing with union

running. They would protect the factory.

Ellis Island opens. The island runs immigrant through a test to get in

the cross of gold convention.
