T-AGS(X) Oceanographic Survey Ship
Program Overview
• T-AGS(X) will be the next-generation class of ships to
recapitalize the existing T-AGS 60 PATHFINDER class
oceanographic surveying ships.
– There are 7 ships in the T-AGS 60 class, and a one-
for-one recapitalization of T-AGS(X) is envisioned
for the future
• The primary mission systems are the deep and shallow
water bottom mapping sonars, which have historically
been procured as a COTS contract separate from the
ship
• The Moonpool Launch and Retrieval System (MLARS)
with improved efficiency, reliability, and safety
• T-AGS are operated by civilian crews from Military
Sealift Command (MSC), while civilian surveyors from
the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO) perform
specific survey missions

T-AGS(X) Oceanographic Survey Ship
Operations
• T-AGS Oceanographic Surveying Ships execute a
wide range of multi-mission surveys around the
world. Each survey requires that a T-AGS be
outfitted to support the particular type(s) of
mission(s) it will perform
– Survey mission planning for the ship includes:
• Location and access requirements for the
mission equipment brought aboard by the
surveyors
• Launch and recovery sequencing
• Composition of the surveying team
T-AGS 66 (USNS Maury)
• A single T-AGS may utilize a particular outfitting of surveyors and equipment to perform
a variety of surveying and collection missions
• There may be opportunities for surveys in areas (i.e. high latitudes) where the existing
T-AGS fleet does not normally operate
