Robert V. Colarossi President of USA

What an incredibly busy and productive summer it has been preparing our athletes to qualify to the Olympic Games next summer in Artistic, Rhythmic and Trampoline.

The 100th Anniversary of the World Gymnastics Championships concluded August 24 at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim in California, and proved to be a major success for USA Gymnastics at every level. The American gymnasts won seven medals including five gold and two silver. The USA Women earned the first team gold medal in a World Championships competition. The USA Men earned the team si lver medal, making it the second consecutive team silver medal at a World Championships. Paul Hamm won the World Championships All-Around title, becoming the first American male gymnast to ever accomplish this feat. He also won gold on Floor Exercise. Carly Patterson won the allaround silver medal in only her third competition as a senior gymnast. Hollie Vise and Chellsie Memmel tied for the gold medal on Uneven Bars making it a double gold for the U.s.

Gymnastics The women's team lost three World Medalists, Courtney Kupets, Ashley Postell and Annia Hatch to illness or injury. The alternates stepped in to the lineup and stepped up to the challenge, winning

the first team gold at a World Championships. We wish Courtney and Annia a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing all three of them back on the competition floor as soon as possible.

The Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim was a fantastic partner in promoting and organizing the event. Total World Championships attendance was 85,872. USA Gymnastics and NBC partnered together to present five hours of coverage from the 2003 World Championships, including a prime time show on Aug. 24. An additional 2 1/ 2 hours of programming is being developed with ESPN and ESPN2 that will air later this Fall. The USA Gymnastics National Congress was held in conjunction with the World Championships with over 1600 professional members participating. Congratulations to the 2003 Hall of Fame Inductees: Bonnie Davidson, Harold Holmes, Jr., Scott Keswick, Charles Lakes, Shannon Miller, Jaycie Phelps and Chris Waller.

The most memorable "Longines Perfect 10 Moments in Time" was awarded during the World Championships to Nadia Comaneci's Perfect 10 at the 1976 American Cup by more than 316,000 votes. Nadia's Perfect 10 moment narrowly edged 1984 Olympic Champion Mary Lou Retton for the winning moment by less that 1%.

T.J. Maxx, the nation's largest off-price retailer, announced plans to partner with USA Gymnastics in 2003 and 2004 to sponsor the T.J . Maxx Tour of Gymnastics Champions. Competitive gymnastics routines will be combined with acrobatic performances to dazzle and delight fans of all ages. The tour will deliver gymnastics in a creative and entertaining format to nine cities Oct. 3-19, 2003. For city and ticket information, check out the ad in this issue of the magazine on page 48.

The U.S. also experienced a great deal of success at the Pan American Games held just prior to the World Championships. The U.s. won 21 medals in men's, women's and rhythmic gymnastics, including 11 gold. These results show the tremendous depth in our program that we're able to field two successful teams internationally in men's and women's gymnastics.

The Sports Acrobatics and Trampoline and Tumbling programs also had a busy summer with the Freedom Cup, Sports Acrobatic JO and National Championships, and the Trampoline and Tumbling JO and National Championships. See coverage of these events in this issue or log on to www. usa· gymnastics.org for more details.

The World Gymnaestrada, which took place July 20-26 in Lisbon, Portugal, included 25,000 particifants from 52 countries. The U.s. delegation included 250 participants from the ages of 3-77. It was a spectacular event and planning has already begun for the next Gymnaestrada in Dornbin, Austria in 2007.

Good luck to Mary Sanders, Olga Karmansky, and Lisa Wang who will be competing at the World Rhythmic Championships, September 24-28 in Budapest, Hungary, and all of the athletes who will compete October 13-19 at the World Trampoline Championships in Hannover, Germany.

Congratulations to all of the clubs, coaches, gymnasts, officials and parents for the extraordinary success that was achieved this summer. Also, thank you to all of the individuals who made these events a success. Good luck in training and in competitions this fall!

Team USA was dealt a severe blow in warm-ups prior to the team

competition at the Pan American Garnes when their most internationally experienced athlete, Sho Nakamori of the USOTC in Colorado, fractured his left femur while vaulting. The team of David Durante, Dan Gill, Jonathon Horton, David Sender and Clay Strother pulled together and finished the competition with four medals; bronze in the team competition, Durante with silver in the all-around, and Strother with the silver on floor and bronze on pommel horse.

Cuba successfully defended its title from the 1999 Games and captured the gold with a score of 221.475. Brazil

earned silver with a 216.375 and the Americans were just a fraction away at 215.925.

There was little doubt that the loss of Nakamori impacted the U.S. squad. "We had a chance of challenging Cuba," USA Head Coach Thorn Glielmi admitted, pointing out that the injured athlete is a seasoned competitor. While Team USA is a combination of junior and senior athletes, both Cuba and Brazil were represented by their World Championships teams.

In the all-around competition, Team GatticaPalo Alto's Durante won the silver medal and was joined by outstanding performances from teammates Horton, from Cypress, who finished tied for fourth and Dan Gill, from Stanford, who finished sixth. Defending Champion from Cuba. Eric Lopez, won the title.

"I'm very excited," said Durante. "This is the most fun that I've ever had at a

competition. To see the Americans place three in the top six is

awesome. Our 17-year old ijonathan Horton) wasn't

even supposed to compete today and he pushed through and went six for six. It was unbelievable. I'm so happy right now."

Horton had one of the fastest warmups of his life. Forty-five minutes prior to the start of the competition, he was informed that he would be competing in the place of Strother who had become ill.

"My teammate (Strother) got sick and coach was like 'hurry up, get ready'," Horton. "I've never warmed up that fast my life. I just got what I needed to get and went out there and did my job."

Gill rounded out the American field with sixth place performance. He commented about how the support of the crowd spurred him and his teammates on.

UWe got complete support from our competitors and the crowd. We weren't expectinf{ it. Anytime the crowd is that loud it just builds your energy."

Glielmi said, "This event says a lot about the depth of the men's gymnastics program in the U.S. This is a very inexperienced team. They are very young and the athlete with the most international experience is Sho (Nakamori) and he is out of the competition, so for three to finish in the top six is just great."

During event finals, University of Minnesota's Strother, made up for lost time by winning two medals-tied for silver on floor and bronze on pommel horse.

u.s. Rhythmic Gymnastics

--.... j®~&~~~ R003 at Pan American Games By Mary Beth Vorwerk

Coming into the Pan Am Games, the United States' Mary Sanders from Ritmika Rhythmic Club was the highest ranked rhythmic gymnast

competing in the event. After finishing in the top spot during prelims, Sanders said the pressure was no different from other competitions.

"There's always pressure to do the best for yourself and your team no matter what place you're in," said Sanders. "I hope to perform to the best of my ability today, and 1 feel just as confident with the ribbon and dubs as 1 did with the hoop and ball."

Sanders confidence paid off and she took home the all-around gold medal after finishing the day with a score of 100.450.

"I'm so happy about my performance," said Sanders,

who turns 18 on Aug. 26. "It's a huge relief and I couldn't be happier. I just wanted to go out there and make my coach (Mimi Masleva) proud and do the best I could."

Seventeen-year-old Olga Karmansky of Isadora Rhythmics in Brooklyn, N.Y. finished in second behind Sanders with a final

score of 88.325 to take home the silver.

"Winning a silver medal feels really good and it was unexpected with all of the talented girls here," said Karmansky. "This was a great experience for me right before worlds and 1 think I'm really ready for it now."

The World Championships for Rhythmic Gymnastics will be held in Budapest, Sept. 19-29.

Once again, Sanders performed outstanding during event finals and walked away with the gold medal in all four events.

'This feels amazing," Sanders said. '1t's a dream come true and 1 think my father would be very proud."

Sanders father, Fred, was her first coach and the 1%3 NCAA

Champion in Trampoline. He passed. away nearly 10 years ago.

Karmansky won the silver medal in ball. She said, "I had a great time here and 1 fed off the energy of the crowd today. I had so much fun and felt so confident with the crowd

behind us."

Over 520 gymnasts traveled to Jacksonville, Fla., the week of Aug 3-7 for the Sports Aerobatics National Championships being held at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. The Elite athletes' performance in this competition along with Team Trials held in June was used to determine the 2003-2004 National Team, making competition especially intense. The JO athletes, Levels 5-10, also came to Florida with something to prove. They were on a mission to show off their hard work over the last year and win the title of National Champion. Jeff Smith, event directo~ once again did an amazing job with the event. Because of his tireless efforts in coordinating National Championships and his dedication to the betterment of the sport, Jeff was awarded the 2003 Star Service Award.

Mixed Pair Arthur Davis and Shenea Booth, 2002 World Championships gold medalists, added three more gold medals to their collection as they finished in the top spot in all events in the Elite Mixed Pair competition. Each year their routines get more complex as they continue competing at a higher and higher level. This pair received additional honors including high score of the meet and Athletes of the Year. They also shared the Glen Sundby Award for Outstanding Pair / Group Performance with CAT mixed pair Kris Duncan and Megan Vaughan. Kris and Megan swept the silver medals for each mixed pair event. Michael Rodrigues and Laura Fitzsimmons captured the bronze medal in each category. ... __ ... __ .... iiI

Women's Trio The Empire trio of Danielle Heider, Jennifer daSilva, and Samantha Shabow won the gold medal for their tempo routine and their all-around performance. outstanding competition. They swept the gold medals for event finals and all-around categories in the junior elite trio competition.

The No Fear Revolution A New Way of Looking at An Old Beast. Alison Arnold PhD.

It's your biggest nightmare. One day you can do the skill, the next day you can't. Or, you do it perfectly with spot, in the pit, or onto mats. But when you attempt to do it by yourse!£, all you get is BALKING!

Fear. You hate it. It can be paralyzing. It can make even the most patient coach and gymnast want to check him or herse!£ into the psych ward. This article will help you look at fear in a totally new way. A way so different, so revolutionary, you may just want to write me a thank you note. So . ..

ARE YOU READY TO REVOLUTIONIZE THE WAY YOU ARE LOOKING AT FEAR?

You work all day in the gym on body positions. You do drill after drill to be sure that your body is in perfect alignment. Your coaches talk at length to you about the importance of keeping a tight body. You know full well that gymnastics without alignment is like trying to thread a piece of spaghetti through the eye of a needle. Not easy and not very effective.

But what about the mind? The mind is a thought factory, creating thought after thought after thought. A mind out of control is the same as a body out of control; all over the place, and mostly in places where it doesn't belong. Loose mind creates fear, frustration, doubt, and negativity. The opposite is also true. TIght mind creates fearlessness, positivity, confidence, and focus. So it's simple, just as

46 USA GYMNAsr.es SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2003

you work on how to tighten your body through correction and drills, do the same with your mind. Teach yourself how to tighten your mind through mental corrections and drills. Change the way you think about fear by simply seeing it as loose mind.

FEAR IS SIMPLY "LOOSE MIND"

You correct your loose body all the time. You would never let yourse!£ go for more than one turn with bent knees or a loose core. So why is it different for the mind? Begin to correct loose mind just as you would any body position. Correct it non-emotionally. Whenever you feel fear, frustration or over-thinking, Simply draw your attention to loose mind with a Simple comment. Say something to yourself like, "my mind seems loose, what am I thinking?", or "I see fear is creeping in, just focus on the correction over and over." Teach yourself to identify loose mind whenever you feel it. Without awareness, making a correction is virtually impOSSible. Teach yourse!£ to listen to what you are saying in your head. Then, "lock it down" by either saying cue words, corrections, or positive self statements.

Remember, when the mind is loose, negative thoughts have a free for all. They take any opportunity to sneak in and create fear. So how can you keep your mind tight? How can you "lock it down"? The following is a list of drills you can do to help anchor your mind. "Anchoring" keeps the mind tight, in proper alignment, so that negative thoughts cannot enter leading to fear and doubt.

ANCHORS FOR LOOSE MINDS

1 MENTAL CHOREOGRAPHY

The mind is simply another part of the body. In sport, you spend countless hours training your body for proper position, alignment, and technique. The mind must also remain in proper alignment in order to achieve success. One of the most important skills for any gymnast is the ability to pull one's mind back into proper position when it goes off course. Mental choreography is the blinders for the mind. It keeps the mind tight and provides a resting place when it goes off course. We know that the biggest cause of poor performance is out of control thinking. Keeping the monkey-mind occupied and "out of trouble" is key. Using mental choreography enables the mind to stay focused, centered, and on track.

Mental Choreography words are verbal cues used to keep the mind tight during performance. These words are used before, during, and after performance, not only during difficult areas of routines, but presentation areas as well. When these words are done during every routine, or skill, your words serve as a resting place for your mind. This is the secret gift of mental choreography. Once it becomes second nature and automatic, it will carry you through routines during the difficult or trying times. The words will allow the mind to become "non-thinking," thus in the zone. The zone is ultimate "tight mind."

There are three types of MC thoughts to utilize as mental cues when you're afraid:

·Technical Statements: Statements or corrections (lift, tight, shoulders square)

• Energy Statements: Statements that bring energy up or down (go!, push here!, and relax breathe)

• Confidence Statements: Statements that encourage and build trust (i.e. I can do it, I've done it before)

Focus on there cue words to lock down your mind and keep it tight

.:l ANCHOR PHRASES

Anchor phrases are any phrase or series of actions that help tighten your mind. The mind must be anchored strong and steady in order to stay on course in the turbulence of negative thinking. Just as you pull your body back to proper position to make a technical correction, you can pull your mind back the same way by using an anchor.

An anchor is a

series of thoughts ~~~~=:::::::========~~=::J or actions that will pull your mind back to perfect mental position. An anchor is a series of strong "come-backs" to those negative thoughts keeping you in fear and doubt. Anchors help you return to focus, fearlessness, and doubtlessness. Examples of strong anchors include: "breathe, stay on course, I can do this," "breathe, tight mind, don't go there," or "relax, keep it cool, it's no big deal."

Each anchor statement should include breatl1ing and positive selftalk. The anchor should break the downward spiral of frustration, fear, or nervousness, and get your mind back on course. Whenever you notice loose mind, pull it back by telling yourself to "go get a drink, and use my anchor," or "do some drills and use your mental anchor," or simply, "anchor my mind."

3" THE CONFIDENCE BANK

For most athletes, fear is Simply a deficit in confidence. Look at your mind as a confidence bank. When positive deposits go up, the mind feels an abundance of confidence. When you're in a deficit in the confidence account, the mind feels fear and worry. Have a wealth of confidence by building up your accounts. An account is built by success. Even successful drills can make your bank overflow. See fear as a lack of J confidence. Even if you have done • . , .~ the skill hundreds of times, if you q...,,~ .::-are fearful, then you are lacking in • r':.~~\~~ce·" ~ confidence. Remember, fear isn't ~c.~~ ~ always rational. As you see fearful • * . .' behavior, especially balking, help create success by going back to the last successful drill. ~ Build up the bank again before pushing f!!. .:. yourself to do the skill. " .•.. __ ........... __ It's important to note that the mind seems to focus on failures more than successes. A gymnast can successfully perform a skill over and over again, just to have all of that shattered by a scary stop in the middle of it. Don't forget about your successes. They are just as important as times when you are having difficulty.

4 WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE!

What you say to yourself is extremely important. Maybe even more important than what others say to you! Are you creating an atmosphere in your head of fear, or one of confidence? What we put energy into grows bigger. Putting energy into fear, even overcon1ing it, fuels the fear beast. Use language with yourself that changes the way you view fear. The following are some phrases to use in order to build confidence and take the focus off of fear.

• It's ok, I just need to build up your confidence. • Tight mind, I can see my fear beast coming up. • Go back and do some drills. Let's build up my bank. • Check my thoughts. I am having a loose mind. • Anchor my mind. Focus on the correction and put it on

automatic. • Don't think about anything but this correction. Say it over

and over again in my head. • Walk through the skill saying my key words. • My monkey mind is getting me into trouble. Focus on

thIS correction.

Remember, look at fear as simply loose mind. It can be corrected, there are drills for it. Correct loose mind quickly and easily before you lose yours!
