Men’s Track & Field General Meeting Minutes

December 2013

The chairman opened the meeting with brief welcoming remarks at 4:10 pm.

Under New Business, Bob Podkaminer gave a brief report on behalf of Standards chair

Jim Grogan on the standards to be employed in 2014 for both the Junior and Senior

championships. For every event, an “A standard” will be deployed, designed to fill

approximately 50-60% of the field. The remaining slots will be filled from a list of eligible

competitors, ranked in descending order, until the field gets filled. Field size for each

event will be clearly stated, the entry deadline has been moved up a week, but

everything would still be petitionable through the normal channels.

Committee reports then followed.

Joe Gentry gave a brief update on Officials’ selection for the national championship

meets. He noted that more women than ever before had been selected for the Indoor

championships, and that the age range of applicants was 57-78. He urged officials to

consider applying for positions at the national championships.

John Green reported on Combined Events. The Thorpe Cup will be held in Germany

this year, with coaching selection occurring through the MT&F Executive Committee.

Athletes will be ranked in descending order, and the first five will be selected from the

top down. Two additional athletes will be selected through specific criteria in order to

obtain a full team of seven athletes.

Dave Kerin reported as Development Chair. He stated that his background was in the

high jump, and that the Committee’s new Development model with its emphasis on

Sports Science (using Edge10 software and data collection) offered a very positive

outlook for the future. Responding to a question concerning athlete filming by Ralph

Mann, he noted the changing technology, such as the GoPro camera, and its potential

use for further research. Kerin also referred to the $4.41m in development funding

received from USOC but noted “subtle encouragement” from the USOC to have the

funds deployed primarily to address deficiencies in specific event groups.

The chair reported on the hosting of the National Junior championships and World

Juniors in Eugene, and noted the proposal to hold the shot put competition for the

outdoor nationals at the State Capitol if the athletes supported the proposal. He also

reported that RFPs had been issued for the Indoor National championships for 2015-

2017. Concerns were raised about the effects of altitude for some venues, and the

possibility that we had “worn out” our welcome in Boston. Mentioned was made of a

new track being built in New York, and the hosting of the 2016 World Indoors in

Portland.

Linda Lanker reported that she had been in contact with many Junior Colleges, many of

which were bringing back their track programs. She reported that many were requiring

their coaches to become certified as officials as well, and that she felt confident that

Junior College teams would get bigger and better in the future.

AAC representative Will Leer asked a question about the criteria for the Jesse Owens

Award. The secretary indicated that he would follow up with the National Office staff and

get back to Mr. Leer following the meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 4:52 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Alan Kolling, Secretary
