USC School of Pharmacy F ounded in 1905, the USC School of Pharmacy is the oldest and foremost pharmacy school in Southern California. In 2005 the school will celebrate its 100-year anniversary – a milestone in pharmacy education and research. Approximately 50 percent of the prac- ticing pharmacists in Southern California are graduates of USC. The school has an average student body of 713 full-time students in the professional program, 87 students in the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs, a full-time faculty of 70 and more than 355 part-time and vol- unteer faculty. The school occupies state-of-the-art facilities on the USC Health Sciences campus in metropolitan Los Angeles, adjacent to the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center (one of the largest teach- ing hospitals in the country), the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Doheny Eye Institute and the USC University Hospital. USC School ofPharmacy

Founded in 1905, the USC School of Pharmacy is the oldest and foremost pharmacy

school in Southern California. In 2005 the school will celebrate its 100-year anniversary –

a milestone in pharmacy education and research. Approximately 50 percent of the prac-

ticing pharmacists in Southern California are graduates of USC. The school has an average student

body of 713 full-time students in the professional program, 87 students in the Master of Science

and Doctor of Philosophy programs, a full-time faculty of 70 and more than 355 part-time and vol-

unteer faculty.

The school occupies state-of-the-art facilities on the USC Health Sciences campus in metropolitan

Los Angeles, adjacent to the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center (one of the largest teach-

Honor SocietiesRho ChiTheta chapter of Rho Chi, national honorarypharmaceutical society, was established atUSC in 1925. Charters for chapters of thisorganization are granted only to studentgroups in those colleges that are members ingood standing of the American Association ofColleges of Pharmacy. Eligibility for mem-bership is based on high attainment in schol-arship, character, personality and leadership.All candidates selected for membership musthave completed two years of college work,and they must be approved by the Dean ofthe School of Pharmacy.

Phi Lambda SigmaThe Phi Lambda Sigma chapter was estab-lished at USC in 1988. This national pharmacyleadership society is devoted to identifying,supporting and recognizing the contributionof pharmacy students to their colleges, theirclassmates, their campuses, their communi-ties and to their chosen profession.

Student Housing and Service Facility,Health Sciences CampusThere are limited university-managedaccommodations on the Health Sciencescampus. Students may wish to live in studenthousing on the University Park campus,located about eight miles from the HealthSciences campus.

Student Health Services, Health SciencesCampusServices of the Student Health Center, cov-ered by the mandatory student health fee,include the usual ambulatory care healthservices given by the faculty of the USCDepartment of Family Medicine and theStudent Health Center nursing staff. Hoursare from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondaythrough Friday, excluding USC holidays. TheStudent Health Center is located in the USCHealth Care Consultation Center, 1500 SanPablo Street, Suite 104, adjacent to the USCUniversity Hospital, one block northeast ofthe School of Pharmacy. The telephone num-ber is (323) 442-5980. In addition to the stu-dent health fee, all Pharm.D. students musthave major medical insurance coverage fromthe USC Health Plan. A student may requesta waiver of the USC Health Plan if coveredby a personal medical plan acceptable to theHealth Insurance Office.

Professional Degrees

A four-year curriculum, following appropriatecollege prerequisite work, leading to theDoctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) is offered tostudents admitted to the School of Pharmacy.A sample outline of the curriculum is listed inthe following pages. The degree will not beconferred until the student has successfullycompleted all Doctor of Pharmacy degreerequirements.

Application ProcedureThe School of Pharmacy uses the CollegeApplication Service (PharmCAS) and a sup-plemental application for its admissionprocess. Applications are available atwww.usc.edu/hsc/pharmacy. The PharmCASand supplemental application deadline isJanuary 1 (subject to change).

Applications received before January 1 willhave priority interview consideration whenthe PharmCAS and supplemental applicationare submitted and all necessary criteria havebeen met. Follow the instructions carefullysince PharmCAS is filed electronically andthe supplemental application is maileddirectly to the USC School of Pharmacy.

Evaluation of official transcripts is completedby the School of Pharmacy AdmissionsCommittee and a letter of acceptance ismailed to each applicant who qualifies forentrance. All documents mailed directly tothe School of Pharmacy and received fromPharmCAS by the Office of Admissionbecome the property of the university andcannot be returned or duplicated for otherthan university purposes.

Admissions GuidelinesThe Admissions Committee considers sever-al factors in making admissions decisions:strong academics; competitive performancein the interview; recommendation forms; andwritten comments specified in the applica-tion. The committee also considers a candi-date’s motivation to pursue pharmacy, stronginterpersonal skills, excellent oral and writtencommunication skills, and leadership abili-ties. While the School of Pharmacy givesequal consideration to every qualified appli-cant, the school cannot accommodate allqualified candidates who apply for admission.

Admission of International StudentsAlthough international students are subject tospecial admission procedures, which are spec-ified in the Admission section of this cata-logue, they must follow the application pro-cedures used by domestic students.

Entrance RequirementsAdmission to the School of Pharmacy requires:completion of the prerequisite college courses(approximately 90 semester or 135 quarterunits) and a minimum 3.0 (A = 4.0) cumula-tive grade point average based on all transfer-able college course work.

Candidates who have received or will receivea baccalaureate degree or who have complet-ed units in excess of the minimum requiredwill be considered more favorably than appli-cants who have fulfilled only minimumrequirements.

Prepharmacy RequirementsTo be eligible for admission to the School ofPharmacy, students must take the requiredprerequisite college courses (approximately 90semester units or 135 quarter units) includinggeneral chemistry, organic chemistry, generalbiology, physics, biochemistry, molecular biol-ogy, microbiology, mammalian physiology, cal-culus, statistics, general psychology or intro-duction to sociology, macroeconomics ormicroeconomics, interpersonal communica-tion, English and electives from the socialand behavioral sciences and humanities.These requirements may be completed atany accredited two-year or four-year collegeor university.

Grades of pass/no pass will not be accepted(unless a course is only offered on a pass/nopass basis).

Mathematics and Physical SciencesCourses must include calculus, statistics, gen-eral chemistry and organic chemistry. Onlycourses for science majors are acceptable. It ishighly recommended that math and sciencecourses be completed during the regular aca-demic year and not during a summer term.

Calculus: one semester or two quarters ofcalculus are required. The course shouldinclude differential and integral calculus forscience majors. The recommended course atUSC is MATH 125.

Statistics: One course is required.

General chemistry: a one-year course for sci-ence majors, including laboratory, is required.The course should include inorganic chem-istry and qualitative analysis. The recom-mended courses at USC are CHEM 105aLbL.

Organic chemistry: a one-year course for sci-ence majors, including laboratory, is required.If the school offers less than a one-yearcourse, the student must complete the secondsemester at another institution. The recom-mended courses at USC are CHEM 322abL.

Physics: a one-year course in physics forscience majors, including laboratory, isrequired. The recommended courses atUSC are PHYS 135abL or PHYS 151L andPHYS 152L.

Biological SciencesGeneral biology: a one-year course for sciencemajors is required in general biology withlaboratory, for science majors (excludingcourses in human anatomy, human physiolo-gy, botany and microbiology). If the schooloffers less than a one-year course, the studentmust complete the second semester at anoth-er institution. The recommended courses atUSC are BISC 120L and BISC 220L.

Microbiology (with lab): one course in micro-biology for science majors, including laborato-ry, is required. The recommended course atUSC is BISC 300L.

Molecular biology: one course in molecularbiology for science majors is required. Therecommended course at USC is BISC 311.

Biochemistry or cell biology: one coursein biochemistry or cell biology for sciencemajors is required. The recommended courseat USC is BISC 316L.

Mammalian physiology: one course in mam-malian physiology for science majors, withlaboratory, is required. The recommendedcourse at USC is BISC 307L.

EnglishTwo semesters or three quarters of composi-tion (or two quarters of composition and onequarter of literature) are required. RemedialEnglish and English as a Second Language(ESL) are not acceptable. An English profi-ciency examination may be required.

CommunicationsOne course (one semester or one quarter) ininterpersonal communications is required.The course should include core theories ofmessage production and reception in bothinterpersonal and public contexts. Onesemester or one quarter is required. The rec-ommended courses at USC are COMM 200,COMM 201, COMM 204, COMM 304 orCOMM 308.

Social and Behavioral SciencesPsychology or Sociology: one course in gener-al psychology or introduction to sociology isrequired. The recommended courses at USCare PSYC 100 or SOCI 200.

Economics: one course in either macro-economics or microeconomics is required. If aone-year course is offered, both semesters maybe taken and excess units may be applied toeither the remainder of the unit requirementsfor the subject area or as elective units. Theequivalent course at USC is ECON 203 orECON 205.

Students who have earned a baccalaureatedegree and meet the prerequisites describedabove (including general psychology or intro-duction to sociology and microeconomics ormacroeconomics) at the time of admission willhave fulfilled the requirement for social andbehavioral sciences.

Students who will not have earned a baccalau-reate degree at the time of admission mustcomplete an additional two semesters or threequarters of courses in the social and behav-ioral sciences. Recommended areas includeanthropology, psychology, psychobiology, eco-nomics, geography and sociology.

HumanitiesStudents who have earned a baccalaureatedegree and meet the prerequisites describedabove at the time of admission will have ful-filled the requirements for humanities.

Students who will not have earned a bac-calaureate degree at the time of admissionmust complete an additional two semesters orthree quarters of courses in literature, philos-ophy, history, ethics, foreign language or finearts. Studio or performance classes in art andmusic are not acceptable.

Advanced Placement ExaminationThe Admissions Committee recommendsthat applicants enroll in all of the requiredprepharmacy courses. Advanced Placementexaminations are not granted equivalent statusas specific courses and do not fulfill any of theprepharmacy requirements. For students whomay have been waived out of any prepharma-cy requirement, the committee generally willconsider the application of higher level coursework toward prepharmacy requirements.Please contact the School of Pharmacy Officeof Admission for specific information.

Entrance ExaminationsAn entrance examination (PPBE, PCAT) isnot required; an interview will be requiredfor admission.

Transfer StudentsTransfer students from other U.S. accreditedcolleges of pharmacy are not accepted intothe Pharm.D. program.

Post-Baccalaureate ProgramThe School of Pharmacy accepts a limitednumber of applicants (if vacancies exist)who hold a recently conferred baccalaureatedegree in pharmacy from a college ofpharmacy accredited by the AmericanCouncil on Pharmaceutical Education. Suchapplicants may not be required to meet allprepharmacy requirements in order to qualifyfor admission and, if admitted to the Doctorof Pharmacy program, may be accepted at anadvanced level for a minimum of two years(72 semester units) of full-time study.

Special Admissions Program for HighSchool Students and USC UndergraduatesThe Trojan Admission Prepharmacy (TAP)program provides guaranteed admission to theUSC School of Pharmacy for USC undergrad-uates who meet preset performance standards.The TAP program has been designed toattract highly qualified, mature high schoolseniors to apply to USC and take theirprepharmacy course work at USC beginningas first semester freshmen. The program alsoallows USC undergraduates to apply to theTAP program after completing 32-48 semesterunits of undergraduate course work at USC.

Students are not eligible for the TAP programif they have completed more than 48 semesterunits of prepharmacy course work. Admissionrequirements for high school applicants to theTAP program include prior admission to aUSC undergraduate program and satisfactoryscores on the TAP program admission inter-view and entrance essay. Minimum admissionrequirements for eligible second year USCundergraduates include completion of 32-48semester units of pharmacy prerequisite cours-es at USC, a minimum cumulative USC GPAof 3.4 and satisfactory scores on the TAP pro-gram admission interview and entrance essay.

Students accepted into the TAP program musttake full course loads each semester (mini-mum of 16 units) and complete their prephar-macy requirements with at least a 3.2 cumula-tive GPA. All prepharmacy courses must betaken during the fall and spring semesters atUSC for letter grades. Summer school at USCor elsewhere, credit/no credit grades andgrades of D and lower are not acceptable.

TAP program participants who fulfill therequirements listed above will be guaranteedadmission to the Doctor of Pharmacy programat USC. Participants who fulfill the prephar-macy requirements and TAP GPA require-ments and wish to complete their baccalaure-ate degree can do so without losing theirguaranteed admission to the School ofPharmacy, provided they meet or exceed theminimum cumulative GPA required for admis-sion into the Pharm.D. program. TAP programstudents receive ongoing individual advise-ment, access to the School of Pharmacy’s stu-dent services and the privilege of joining thePrepharmacy Club. A specific listing of USCcourses and a recommended program for TAPprogram participants can be obtained from theSchool of Pharmacy Office of Admission.

This new program requires six courses indifferent categories, plus writing and diversi-ty requirements, which are described indetail on pages 183 through 187.

Pharm.D. Curriculum RequirementsThe completion of a four-year professionalcurriculum is required to earn the Doctor ofPharmacy degree. The curriculum, except forthe fourth year, is a “block” program. All stu-dents must enroll in 18 units each semesterin courses designed for that year, falland spring. Students do not have choices of

courses to take nor are they permitted todrop any one course or courses during thesemester. (Year II and III students have elec-tive course choices). Progress is permittedonly when the prior semester is completedin full. Students should view the curriculumoutlined here as advisory only and subjectto modification. “Hours” are substitutedfor “units” in identifying acceptable timerequirements for completion of the programstages. Degree RequirementsAll students in the Doctor of Pharmacydegree program must meet course require-ments, grade point average requirements andprogram residency requirements. The School of Pharmacy, through theGraduate School, offers curricula leading tothe M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in pharmaceuti-cal sciences and in molecular pharmacologyand toxicology. Admission Requirements for the Master ofScience and Doctor of Philosophy inPharmaceutical SciencesApplicants should possess a bachelor’s degreeor equivalent from an accredited college oruniversity. A minimum grade point average of

3.0 and qualifying scores on the GRE in theverbal and quantitative tests are required. Inaddition to excellent communication skills,applicants should possess knowledge andcompetence equivalent to one year of accept-able course work in at least three of thefollowing disciplines: mathematics, organicchemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry,physiology and pharmacology. Admission Requirements for the Master ofScience and Doctor of Philosophy inMolecular Pharmacology and ToxicologyAll applicants must possess a bachelor’s orhigher degree from an accredited college oruniversity with a grade point average of 3.0 orbetter and must have qualifying scores on theGRE. Students who have strong backgroundsin biology and/or chemistry are best suitedfor this program. Proficiency in English isessential. Whenever possible, students willbe selected for admission on the basis ofinterviews with one or more members of thefaculty.

Both the M.S. and Ph.D. programs empha-size research in molecular and neuropharma-cology, receptor pharmacology, biochemicaland oxidant toxicology. Applications foradmission are reviewed by the MolecularPharmacology and Toxicology GraduateCommittee of the School of Pharmacy andare evaluated on the basis of academic excel-lence and commitment to scientific research.

Admission Requirements for the Master ofScience in Pharmaceutical Economics andPolicyApplicants for admission must have achieveda minimum 3.0 GPA in undergraduate orprofessional school and adequate scores onthe GRE. In addition, applicants will berequired to have completed upper divisioncourses in statistical methods, calculus andmicroeconomics.

Admission Requirements for the Doctor ofPhilosophy in Pharmaceutical Economicsand PolicyCandidates with a bachelor’s, master’s orPharm.D. degree are invited to apply.Applicants must have demonstrated profi-ciency in verbal and written English and apti-tude in economics, mathematics, statisticsand computer science. Deficiencies in eco-nomics and statistical background can beaddressed through preliminary course workafter admission to the program.

A minimum grade point average of at least3.0 (A = 4.0) is required. Special attention isgiven to the grades achieved in economics,statistics and mathematics courses relevant tothe program. A qualifying score on the GREin verbal and quantitative areas is required.

Students with GRE scores of 1200 or betterwill be given priority for financial aid support.

Admission Requirements for the Master ofScience in Regulatory ScienceApplicants should possess a bachelor’s degreeor equivalent from an accredited college oruniversity. Applicants with graduate or pro-fessional degrees are encouraged to apply. Aminimum grade point average of 3.0 or quali-fying scores on the GRE or equivalent exam-ination are required. The program encour-ages the participation of part-time studentswith work experience.

Acceptance criteria for those individuals willbe assessed on a case-by-case basis. Englishproficiency is essential. Students will beselected for admission, whenever possible,after interviews with one or more members offaculty.

Admission of International Students toGraduate Degree ProgramsAll requirements described in this section arealso applicable to the admission of interna-tional students. Graduate Degrees 733

Degree Requirements

These degrees are under the jurisdiction ofthe Graduate School. Students should alsorefer to the Requirements for Graduationsection, page 62 and the Graduate Schoolsection of this catalogue for general regula-tions, page 601. All courses applied towardthe degrees must be courses accepted by theGraduate School.

Master of Science in PharmaceuticalSciencesA Master of Science degree in the pharma-ceutical sciences will be granted on the basisof completion of at least 24 units of formalcourse work and presentation of an accept-able thesis (PSCI 594ab, 4 units) based onthe results of an original investigation.

Master of Science in MolecularPharmacology and ToxicologyA minimum of 32 units is required includingINTD 531, INTD 561, INTD 571, andPHBI 582, MPTX 500, MPTX 501, foursemesters of MPTX 594ab and MPTX 700.

To obtain the master’s degree, studentsmay choose from two tracks. First, the non-research master’s track requires that the stu-dent carry out a detailed, extensive literature

review in an area determined by the studentin conjunction with a thesis advisor facultymember. Second, the research track requiresthat the student carry out a research projectduring the second year of the program.

On either track, during the students’ finalsemester they will prepare a thesis to com-plete their degree requirements, either cover-ing the scientific area selected in the non-research track, or describing their researchproject and results in the research track. Thethesis should be 50-100 pages on average.

Research can be initiated earlier in theprogram – in the first year or first summer.Students selecting the non-research mastertrack may elect and are encouraged to carryout research in their program.

Students are not allowed to be paid for work-ing in a lab if they are taking research or the-sis units. During the summer, faculty advisorscan provide a stipend, arranged on an individ-ual basis. Funding is not guaranteed in themaster’s program.

Master of Science in PharmaceuticalEconomics and PolicyThe Department of Pharmaceutical Econom-ics and Policy (School of Pharmacy) offers aprogram of study leading to the M.S. degree.Applicants must apply to the Graduate Schooland meet the admissions requirements of theprogram. This program requires students todemonstrate skills in the analysis of pharma-ceutical and health technology innovations,as well as an understanding of contemporaryhealth policy issues. A minimum of 36 unitsof graduate level courses is required.

Grade Point AverageA grade point average of at least 3.0 (A = 4.0)must be achieved on graduate course work atUSC.

Course RequirementsThe student is required to complete the fol-lowing 36 units of graduate level course work:ECON 414 (4 units), ECON 500 (4 units)or PPD 501 (4 units), PM 511aL (4 units), PM 512 (4 units) or approved elective,PMEP 509 (4 units), PMEP 519 (4 units),PMEP 529 (4 units), PMEP 538 (4 units) andPMEP 539 (4 units).

Additional Degree RequirementsThe student must satisfactorily complete thespecified courses in economics, preventivemedicine and public administration prior toenrolling in PMEP 538 or PMEP 539. Thestudent is also required to complete anempirical research project on a topic relevantto pharmaceutical economics and policy.

Master of Science in Regulatory Science Regulatory science relates the regulatory andlegal requirements of biomedical productdevelopment to the scientific study neededto establish product safety and efficacy. AMaster of Science degree in regulatory sci-ence will be granted upon completion ofat least 30 units of formal course work and6 units of research project work in an intern-ship setting (MPTX 630). Students withexperience in industry or government cansubstitute an equivalent amount of formalcourse work for the research project with thepermission of the admissions committee.Course requirements normally include a min-imum of three courses concerned with regu-latory aspects of medical product develop-ment and a minimum of one course each inquality assurance, clinical research, business,statistics and law. Recommended course workincludes some courses available in otherdepartments of the university. Studentsshould develop a specific plan of study inconsultation with the graduate advisorsbefore beginning the program.

Doctor of Philosophy in PharmaceuticalSciencesThis program emphasizes basic as well asapplied research in drug delivery and target-ing, utilizing medicinal chemistry, computa-tional chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmacody-namics, molecular pharmacology, immunologyand cell biology.

A minimum of 60 units is required for theDoctor of Philosophy degree. At least 24units of course work are required at the 500-level or above, exclusive of seminar anddirected research. The guidance committeemay require more than 24 units of coursework. A minimum of 12 units is to be takenin courses in the Department of Pharma-ceutical Sciences and a minimum of 8 unitsmust be taken in various related disciplinesoutside the department. The remaining36 units may be fulfilled with other courses,directed research and dissertation.

Foreign Language RequirementThere is no formal foreign language require-ment. However, an individual guidance com-mittee can require competency in a foreignlanguage or some other research tool such ascomputer language, if this is relevant for thestudent’s area of research.

Guidance CommitteeUpon admission, the student will be assignedto a member of the graduate faculty who willserve as his or her temporary advisor until apermanent advisor has been identified. Thestudent’s program of study will be under thedirection of a guidance committee composedof at least five members, one of whom mustbe from outside the department granting thedegree. The student should select a graduateadvisor and guidance committee no later thanthe third semester in residence.

Screening ProcedureThe performance of each student will beevaluated no later than the end of the secondsemester of enrollment in the graduate pro-gram. This screening procedure is conductedby the student’s guidance committee or, if astudent has not selected his or her researchadvisor at that time, by the Graduate ReviewCommittee of the department. The commit-tee reviews thoroughly the student’s progressup to that point in various areas includingcourse work, research interests and laboratoryperformance on his or her research project orlaboratory rotations. If a performance defi-ciency is detected at that point by the com-mittee, the student will be recommended toeither take additional course work or transferto the Master of Science program. Passingthis screening procedure is prerequisite tocontinuation in the Ph.D. program.

Qualifying ExaminationStudents will be required to pass a compre-hensive qualifying examination in major areasof the pharmaceutical sciences. The examina-tion is administered by the guidance commit-tee and consists of two parts: a written exami-nation and a written proposition outlining aresearch project, followed by an oral examina-tion based on the proposition and questionsdealing with the written examination.

All course and qualifying examinationrequirements for the Doctor of Philosophymust be completed within two and one halfyears after admission.

DissertationA dissertation based on original investigation isrequired. The research should make a contri-bution to science and should demonstrate thecandidate’s scholarly advancement and compe-tence to undertake independent research. Anoral defense of the dissertation will be heldafter the candidate submits the final draft ofthe dissertation to the dissertation committee

(see Graduate School policies and require-ments, page 606).

Student TeachingTeaching experience is considered an integralpart of the training of graduate students.Thus, as part of the general requirements forthe Ph.D., each student is required to partici-pate in the teaching program of the School ofPharmacy.

Doctor of Philosophy in MolecularPharmacology and ToxicologyA minimum of 60 units is required. At least24 units must be in formal course work andmust include INTD 531, INTD 561, INTD571, PHBI 582, MPTX 500, MPTX 501, andfour semesters of MPTX 700. The remaining36 units may be fulfilled with other courses,directed research and the dissertation units.Other courses selected from graduate courses(500 level or above) in pharmaceutical sci-ences, biochemistry, cell biology, chemistry,molecular biology, neuroscience, pathologyand physiology will be arranged by students inconsultation with their guidance committee.

Screening ProcedureThe progress of every student accepted intothe program is evaluated on a semester basisby the graduate affairs committee.

Language RequirementThere are no formal foreign language or com-puter language requirements. The guidancecommittee may, however, require compe-tence in a foreign language or computer lan-guage if such competence is relevant to thestudent’s research interests.

Qualifying ExaminationFollowing the successful completion of all for-mal course work (usually two years), studentsmust demonstrate excellence in general phar-macology and toxicology as well as their area(s)of research specialization. General and special-ist knowledge are tested in both written andoral qualifying examinations, which alsoinvolve the presentation of a research proposal.

DissertationAfter passing the Ph.D. qualifying examina-tions, students begin work on their disserta-tion research, which typically requires two tothree years of full-time effort. The disserta-tion research must involve original investiga-tion in a relevant scientific area and mustdemonstrate the student’s ability to plan,conduct and evaluate laboratory experiments.The dissertation research must represent asignificant contribution to knowledge andmust be successfully defended in an oralexamination. The final written dissertationmust be of publishable quality, and must beapproved by the graduate advisor and the dis-sertation committee.

Doctor of Philosophy in PharmaceuticalEconomics and PolicyThe Department of PharmaceuticalEconomics and Policy (School of Pharmacy)offers a program of study leading to thePh.D. degree. Applicants must apply tothe Graduate School and meet admissionsrequirements. This program focuses on eco-nomic assessment of pharmaceuticals andmedical technology and research into thefinance and delivery of pharmaceuticals andpharmacy services. A minimum of 64 units ofgraduate level courses numbered 500 or high-er (excluding 794) and a minimum of fourunits of 794 is required.

Foreign Language RequirementThere is no formal foreign language require-ment. However, competence in the use ofone computer programming language isrequired for the graduate degrees. Suchcompetence can be demonstrated either bycourse work or examination.

Grade Point AverageA grade point average of at least 3.0 (A = 4.0)must have been achieved on graduate coursework at USC. ECON 615 or a higher levelcourse in econometrics must be completedwith a grade of B or higher.

Unit Requirements and Recommended CoursesStudents are required to complete a minimumof 64 units of graduate level course work. Thefollowing courses are recommended towardsfulfilling the 64-unit requirement: ECON 503,ECON 511, ECON 514, ECON 603, ECON615, PM 511a, PMEP 509, PMEP 519, PMEP529, PMEP 538, PMEP 539, PMEP 549 andPMEP 698. Students may transfer and substi-tute up to 24 units of graduate course workfrom other universities to fulfill the required64 units of graduate credit subject to theapproval of the department.

Guidance CommitteeThe student will be assigned to a memberof the graduate faculty who will serve as hisor her temporary advisor until the formationof a guidance committee. The student shouldconsult the pharmaceutical economics andpolicy director of graduate studies on theappointment of a Ph.D. guidance committeeafter taking the written qualifying examina-tion. The chairman of the student’s Ph.D.guidance committee advises the student onmatters of curriculum and graduate opportuni-ties. The guidance committee comprises threeto five members, at least one of whom mustbe from outside the department; at least twomembers must specialize in the student’s areaof emphasis; and at least three of the membersmust be suitable for service on the student’sdissertation committee. The composition of allPh.D. guidance committees must be approvedby the pharmaceutical economics and policy

director of graduate studies. The student mustform his or her guidance committee withinone month after passing the departmentalscreening procedure.

Screening ProcedureThe student’s progress will be reviewed aftereach semester and before registration forany additional course work to determine ifprogress has been satisfactory.

Seminar RequirementsEvery student is required to take and satis-factorily complete three two-unit researchseminars chosen from PMEP 698 or theequivalent. At least one of these seminarsmust be related to the student’s major fieldand the same seminar may be taken morethan once. Before completing the disserta-tion, the student must present at least oneoriginal research paper in a seminar of his orher choice. This paper should typically con-sist of original results contained in the stu-dent’s dissertation. It becomes part of thestudent’s permanent file.

Dissertation Proposal PreparationThe student is required to register for twounits of PMEP 790 and write a researchpaper on a topic suitable for a dissertation.Typically, the chair of the student’s guidancecommittee directs this work. The resultingessay becomes part of the student’s writtendissertation proposal which is presented andcritiqued during the oral portion of the quali-fying examination.

Qualifying ExaminationUpon successful completion of the first twoyears of course and grade requirements, thestudent takes a general written and oralexamination on the chosen area of researchemphasis after presenting a detailed writtendissertation proposal. After passing theseexaminations, the student is admitted to can-didacy for the Ph.D. degree.

DissertationAfter admission to candidacy, the studentforms a dissertation committee comprisingthree faculty members, one of whom must befrom an outside department. The chair ofthis committee is the dissertation supervisor.The student must register for PMEP 794each semester, excluding summer sessions,until the dissertation and all other degreerequirements are completed.

Student TeachingTeaching experience is considered an integralpart of the training of graduate students.As part of the general requirements for thePh.D., all students are required to undergotraining as an educator. This will include par-ticipating in seminars on educational tech-niques and hands-on teaching experiencesthrough participation in didactic and smallgroup teaching in the School of Pharmacy.

Pharm.D./Juris DoctorAdmission RequirementsAdmission to the dual Pharm.D./J.D. programis competitive, and involves meeting admis-sion requirements and gaining acceptance toboth the School of Pharmacy and the USCGould School of Law. Students will not begiven special consideration for admission toeither program because they are applying forthe dual degree. Students who have a bacca-laureate degree may apply to the dualPharm.D./J.D. degree program in two ways.First, they may apply at the time they submittheir Pharm.D. application by concurrentlysubmitting applications to both schools.Students who elect this approach must iden-tify themselves on their Pharm.D. applica-tions as potential dual Pharm.D./J.D. degreestudents. Degree RequirementsThe professions of pharmacy and law are dis-tinctly different, yet pharmacists are ofteninvolved in legal issues and lawyers frequent-ly deal with pharmacy, drug, health care,product development and toxin-related mat-ters. This dual degree program provides qual-ified students with an efficient mechanismfor obtaining the expertise and professionalcredentials that will enable them to developprofessional practices that bring togetherexpertise in both areas.

Overall RequirementsA student is required to complete all workfor both degrees within six years of the dateof matriculation at the School of Pharmacy(Pharm.D.) and five years of matriculation atthe Law School (J.D.). The entire dual degreeprogram will take six years to complete. Dualdegree students will be allowed to use 12 unitsof approved J.D. course work (elective orrequired) to meet 12 units of Pharm.D. elec-tives and 12 units of approved Pharm.D.course work (elective or required) to meetJ.D. electives. A faculty guidance committeewill determine the exact program for eachstudent, including the appropriateness ofcourses in one program used to meet electiverequirements for the other program. A total of208 units are required for the dual degree.

Pharm.D. RequirementsDual degree students must successfully com-plete 144 units of Pharm.D. and acceptableJ.D. units to receive the Pharm.D. degree.The 144 units must include 132 units ofrequired and elective pharmacy course workplus 12 units of J.D. course work deemedacceptable to meet Pharm.D. elective require-ments. Dual degree students should graduatewith their Pharm.D. degrees at the comple-tion of the first semester of the sixth academicyear of the dual degree program. Studentswill be eligible to sit for the Pharmacy BoardExams after completion of the Pharm.D.degree requirements. However, dual degreestudents will not actually be awarded theirPharm.D. degrees until they completerequirements for both degrees.

Juris Doctor RequirementsDual degree students must successfullycomplete 88 units of J.D. and acceptablePharm.D. course work during the second tosixth years of the dual degree program toreceive the J.D. degree. The 88 units mustbe composed of 76 units of J.D. course work,including satisfaction of the upper-divisionwriting requirement and any other substan-tive requirements, plus 12 units of Pharm.D.course work deemed acceptable to meet J.D.elective requirements. No J.D. credit will beawarded for Pharm.D. course work complet-ed prior to matriculation in the Law School.Students cannot receive the J.D. degreeunder requirements for the dual degree

program without prior or simultaneous com-pletion of the Pharm.D. degree.

Both professions require passing a state boardor bar exam to practice the respective profes-sions. Neither of these professional doctoraldegrees requires a thesis or comprehensivefinal exam.

Recommended ProgramPharm.D./J.D. dual degree students willbegin with the first year of the Pharm.D. cur-riculum (36 units). During the second year,students will take the first year law core(33 units), plus 3-5 Pharm.D. units. Due tothe rigor of the Law School core, pharmacycourses during the first year of Law Schoolare limited to non-science courses. The thirdthrough fifth years of the program focus onPharm.D. courses with sufficient law coursesto maintain students’ educational momentumin law. Students should complete theirPharm.D. requirements during the fall of theirsixth year of the program and their law coursework also during the sixth year. Studentsmust complete both degree requirements bythe end of the sixth year of the program.

Pharm.D./M.B.A. Dual Degree ProgramResponding to the growing demand on phar-macists to be knowledgeable in both scienceand business administration, the USC Schoolof Pharmacy in 1988 helped pioneer an inno-vation in pharmaceutical education by offer-ing this unique five-year dual degreeprogram.

The Pharm.D./M.B.A. dual degree programis offered cooperatively by the School ofPharmacy and the USC Marshall School ofBusiness. Students must complete concur-rently all requirements established by bothschools for their respective degrees.

The program involves completion of the firstyear in the School of Pharmacy, the second inthe Marshall School of Business, and thencompletion of the balance of both degreesduring the third through fifth years. A total of48 units must be completed in the MarshallSchool of Business.

Pharm.D./M.S., GerontologyThe emerging impact of the elderly on thehealth care system has created a need forhealth care providers who understand theunique health-related needs of the elderly. Asdrug therapy remains the primary therapeuticoption for chronic disease, the demand forprescription drugs will continue to rise.There is a demand for pharmacists who areequipped to meet the pharmaceutical careneeds of this population. Geriatric pharmacyis becoming increasingly recognized as a spe-cialty. Pharmacists with expertise in gerontol-ogy and geriatrics are in an excellent positionto play a leading role in health policy anddirect patient care. The Pharm.D./M.S.,Gerontology program will provide extensiveeducation and training in the unique healthcare needs of older adults. It will allow stu-dent pharmacists with a career interest in geri-atrics or gerontology to work with health careplanning or delivery organizations to developand implement progressive pharmaceuticalcare programs for the elderly.

Pharm.D./Master of Public HealthThe School of Pharmacy and the Master ofPublic Health program, in recognition of therapidly changing health care environment, andin response to the growing demand for phar-macists who are knowledgeable in both phar-macy and population-based health care issues,have developed a dual degree program. Thejoint Pharm.D./M.P.H. degree will enablegraduates to be more responsive to today’shealth care needs and will provide training forpharmacists who seek to be agents of changewithin the profession and to assume leader-ship roles in the pharmacy field and in publichealth at the local, state and national levels.

Students who are enrolled in the School ofPharmacy must apply to the Master of PublicHealth program no later than January of theirfirst year. All requirements for admission tothe regular M.P.H. program must also be ful-filled by dual degree applicants.

The Pharm.D./M.P.H. program spans fiveyears (four years of pharmacy school coursesand one year of public health courses).

Students begin the core M.P.H. courses fol-lowing the successful completion of the firstyear of pharmacy school. The last three yearsof the program are devoted to course workand the clinical rotations of the School ofPharmacy and to the completion of the elec-tive courses and practicum (field experience)of the M.P.H. program. At the conclusion ofthe joint degree program, students will havecompleted 46 units in the Master of PublicHealth program and four years of courses inthe School of Pharmacy.

All students in the Pharm.D./M.P.H. programmust meet course requirements, grade pointaverage requirements and program residencyrequirements of both programs. Students musthave a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in the Pharm.D.curriculum and a 3.0 in the M.P.H. curriculumto meet graduation requirements.

The Pharm.D. and the M.P.H. degrees areawarded simultaneously upon completion ofthe School of Pharmacy and the Master ofPublic Health requirements.

Students must complete concur-rently all of the requirements established forthe respective degrees. The program alter-nates the courses required for the Pharm.D.program during the fall and spring terms withcourses required in summer terms for theM.S. program.
