“Rational Downsizing: Reference Collection Weeding with a Purpose.”

their experiences and offered advice for future weeding projects.

“We Felt the Need to Weed: Deselection Projects in Two Southeastern
Libraries.
Co-presented with Gordon Baker. Discussed experiences with recent
weeding projects, including deselection methodology and criteria. What
was learned from these projects as well as what would be done differently
next time was shared.

“The Rock of Gibraltar and the Hudson River: The Portrayal of Rock
Hudson’s Life on Television.”
This paper examined Rock Hudson’s critical reception, its depiction of
Hudson’s life and death from AIDS, and its impact on Rock Hudson’s
legacy as a major motion picture and television star.

“‘Henry’s Boys’: Rock, Tab, Rory, and Guy and Clint and …”
This paper examined how Willson and “his boys” (Rock Hudson, Tab
Hunter, Rory Calhoun, Guy Madison, and Clint Walker) were portrayed in
1950s and 1960s movie magazines, newspaper gossip columns, and
popular periodicals such as Life magazine and The Saturday Evening Post,
as well as in reviews of their western films and television series.

“Dishing the Dirt: Telling it to Louella, Hedda, and Walter.”
This paper examined the impact of Walter Winchell (1897-1972), Louella
Parsons (1891-1972), and Hedda Hopper (1890-1976) on popular culture
and the resources available on them, most notably their memoirs
(Winchell wrote one and Parsons and Hopper each wrote two) and the
biographies written about them.

Chaney.”
This presentation examined the books that are available on this star, most
notably the books written by Chaney biographer Michael F. Blake, Lon
Chaney: The Many Behind the Thousand Faces and A Thousand Faces:
Lon Chaney’s Unique Artistry in Motion Pictures, and the most recent and
somewhat controversial book written by Suzanne Gargiulo, Lon Chaney’s
Shadow: John Jeske and the Chaney Mystique.

“Counting around the World: Using Children’s Literature to Integrate
Math and Social Studies.”
Co-presented with Elaine Wiegert. Discussed children’s literature titles
that can be used to introduce young children to diverse cultures and
methods of counting.

Institute for Information Literacy, Immersion is a four and one-half day
national program that provides intensive information literacy training and
education for librarians who conduct library instruction classes.
I applied and was invited to participate in the Immersion ’01, Track II
program. It is quite an honor to have been accepted into this prestigious
program. Although approximately four hundred individuals applied for
inclusion in the Immersion ’01 program, only 90 were selected for both
Track I and Track II. Forty-five individuals were selected for each track.
The Track II Immersion program focused on developing, integrating, and
managing institutional and programmatic information literacy programs.
