For well over a century, c e r t a i n i n s e c t s have been known t o feed on fungal f r u i t i n g bodies . fungi ea ten . v i a b l e a f t e r passage through an i n s e c t ' s d i g e s t i v e t r ac t (Leach e t a l . 1934, Nuorteva and Laine 1972). For b r e v i t y , most papers c i t e d by e a r l i e r reviewers

The most f requen t ly repor ted i n s e c t mycophagists a r e e i t h e r Diptera, mainly Mycetophilidae o r Phoridae, and Coleoptera, separab le i n t o bark b e e t l e s and o t h e r b e e t l e s . Agarics and "bracket" fungi (Polyporaceae) encompass most o f t h e commonly repor ted s u b s t r a t e s .

Most l i t e r a t u r e records i n s e c t s ex t rac ted o r rea red from fungal sporocarps r a t h e r than observat ions o f a c t u a l feeding on fungi .
