Use of SNMP in the Management of Electrical
Energy Measuring Systems
Gustavo Mendes [email protected]
Introduction
• Problem 1: to manage a complex electrical energy net;
• Problem 2: to control the net devices;
• Problem 3: imprecision and inefficiency in the gathering;
• Problem 4: how to manage and control this net?
Agenda
• SALAMEs architecture
• Management Station functions
• SNMP(Simple Network Management Protocol) in SALAME system
• A MIB to the measuring systems management
• Final considerations

• What to manage?

Modules
• Management Station[MS]: control and manage devices;
• Regional Concentrator[RC]: Data gathering;
• Transformer Concentrator[TC]: monitor a set of meters;
Modules
• Adapter: gateway between CT and meter;
• Meter: conventional meter;
Modules - Communication
SNMP
TCP/IP
MODBUS
PLC – Power Line Carrier
EG CR CT
Adapter-Meter
Management Station Functions
• Access Control;
• Communication error management;
• Remote control of the devices;
• Polling of the devices
Management Station Functions
• Management of execution logs;
• Network devices control;
• Reports to the clients;
SNMP in SALAME system
• 4 components in Network management systems:
1. Manageable elements;2. Management Station;3. Management protocol;4. Management informations;
SNMP in SALAME system
• Elements of SNMP:• Management stations;• Agents;
NMS
Agent Request made to agent
Send of trap
The answer to the request
Communication flow
SNMP in SALAME system
• Communication between TCP/IP and SNMP;
SNMP in SALAME system
• Structure
• Managed objects are disposed hierarchically in a tree;
• Each subtree has an specific OID ( Object Identifier ) that is unique;
• As example, OID .1.3.6.1.4.1.12214 in SALAME system is the same of .iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises. ufcg
SNMP in SALAME system
• Structure of the objects in Salame system:
SNMP in SALAME system
• SNMP supports 2 kinds of operations:1. Get;2. Set;
ManagementStation
Agent(RC) Meter
x.x.x.x.x
The agent answer with the consumption of the meter
Consumption of the Meter x.x.x.x.x.x
Consumption requisition - GET
SNMP in SALAME system
• Changing the adminStatus(off -> on):
ManagementStation
Agent(RC) Meter
x.x.x.x.x
Answer about the update of the adminStatus
Set operation to change the adminStatus
Changing adminStatus - SET
SNMP in SALAME system
• SNMP allows not only to know if the device is working, but if it´s working well!
• SNMP manages physical devices (routers, meters) and softwares(SGBDs and Web Servers)
A MIB to the measuring systems management
• Variables for:
• Evaluation (ANEEL): DIC, MDIC, FIC;
• Management : PhysAddr, HardVersion, SoftVersion, DateAndTime, AdminStatus, OperStatus, ContAbert, CommErr, Temperature;
• Consumption: active energy, medium and maximum demand, inductive reactive energy and capacitive reactive energy;
Final considerations
• SALAME objectives to reduce the information access time to the companies and the energy consumers;
• SNMP simplifies this approach;
• The network management becomes a less expensive process;
