A. What Is Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) ?

Electric shock deterrent device Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) is a device that protect consumer from electric

shock. This gadget MUST be fitted in every electric assembly.

B What is electric shock?

Current flow into human body Electric shock is a danger caused by the electricity usage.

It happens when current flow into the body when touching or being touched:-

1.Uninsulated wire or the insulator was broken which is called as Direct Contact .See

picture B.

2.Damaged electrical appliances or running electric current metal which is called as

Indirect Contact. See picture C.

C. How electric shock could happen?

Negligent and lack of knowledge



Most of electric shock incidents are due to:-

1. Negligence

2. User’s attitude while operating the electrical appliances3. Unsafe electrical appliances, cheap and did not get the approval from Energy

Commission.4. Equipment has been modified by the consumer theirself

5. Lack of knowledge, enough skill and awareness on the danger electric

D. Two types of ELCB

Voltage Operand And Current Operand There are two ways of how ELCB is functioning. They are Voltage Operand and Current

Operand. There are variety of shape for each type. Example for Current Operand ELCB

is as depicted in Picture A while two types of Voltage Operand ELCB which had been

abolished are as depicted in Pictures E.

E. Where the ELCB is fitted?

In every house in main switchboard

ELCB must fitted in main switchboard in every home as depicted inpictures D to preventelectric accident and this is very effective way. If you’re using electric water heater

equipment, additional ELCB need to be specially fixed in order to monitor the heater

water. This precaution is good in ensuring your house’s safety.

F. Which ELCB is suitable and safe to use?

Current Operand ELCB. Change immediately if the type is differs.

Few years ago, there was Voltage Operand ELCB, but its utilisation was currently had

been abolished because it was less effective. Voltage Operand ELCB needs to bereplaced with Current Operand ELCB immediately (Picture A). Accredited electric

wireman service or electric contractor who registered with Energy Commission is

required to replace this ELCB, because Current Operand ELCB is more sensitive to any

damaged in assembly and electrical appliances at your house.

G. How ELCB can save your life?

Cut off electricity supply when damage is occured Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) is a tool which helps to prevent electric shock.This device will act to cut the electricity supply off to your house if there were any

damages to assembly or electrical appliances such as leakage current to earth through livewire contact to electrical appliances frame which could expose the consumer to electricshock.

If the wiring at your house is not fitted perfectly or the electrical appliances is low

quality, there are probability of high current leakage to earth. This could cause electric

shock as those described above and could also cause the fire if this state is protracted in

the environment which sensitive with heat.



H. How to ensure that the ELCB is always protecting you?

Doing the ELCB test every month. Make it as practice. ELCB must be tested at least once in a month by pressing down the Test Press Button.When Test Press Button is pressed, the electricity to your house will be cutt off instantly.

This meant that the ELCB at you house is in good condition and functioning. Otherwise please contact the electric contractor who registered with Energy Commission to replaceit with the new one because it could not be repaired. New Current Operand ELCB must

be used because Voltage Operand ELCB was abolished and unsafe.

I. ELCB Rate And Sensitivity

Sensitive and effective

There are ELCBs with different ability and sensitivity according to its utilisation:-

1. For regular houses 40A / 63A, single phase or depend on supply demand and main

switch capacity, ELCB's sensitivity is not exceeding 100mA.2. For heater water, it should posses separate additional ELCB (other than no. 1 above)

with sensitivity is not exceeding 10mA is needed.

3. For load which higher than 100A, 3 phases, ELCB's sensitivity must not exceed

100mA.

J. Things which actuate to electric shock

Don’t do it if you’re not sure and don’t do if it is not safe.

1. Repairing your electrical equipments on your own without the adequate knowledge.2. Making your own wiring/ connection or wiring by people who are non-commissioned.

3. Using cheap electrical appliances and not approved by the Energy Commission and not posses SIRIM label.4. Using burst, damaged and modified electrical appliances.

5. Handling electrical appliances with wet hand or in damp places like in bathroom.

6. Leaving the child to play with equipment and source of electricity.

7. Modifiying the fabrication and orginal purpose of the electrical appliances.

K. Avoid the electric accident

Every electrical user must be more wary when using electrical appliances. Avoid from

doing the repair, modification without any skill and adequate knowledge. Please do not

use low quality and damaged electrical appliances. Make sure that all security featuresand safety equipment at your house is intact and functioning such as:-

1. Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker

2. Fuses Or Miniature Circuit Breaker 3. Ground wire system.
