Chapter 1. Introduction

DotSpy is an additional application to preview and measurescreened one-bit TIFF files, FlexRIP LEN files, and eight-bit TIFFfiles.

DotSpy can run based on a server license (EskoArtwork Server Li-cense Manager), or based on a license coming along with NexusServer. If no license was found, the preference dialog will open uponstarting DotSpy Server License, allowing to define where DotSpycan find the EskoArtwork License Server or Nexus Server. AfterSetting the preferences, the application will save the settings andquit. When restarting DotSpy Server License, the license as definedin the preferences can be used.

DotSpy can be used to open one or more one-bit TIFF files, FlexRipLEN files, or eight-bit single separation images. DotSpy 4.5 canopen most composite images too.If a folder is opened, all files in the folder will be merged, allowing toview all separations of a job.

2.1.3 Units

• DimensionsThe Dimensions allow to define what unit will be used to show di-mensions in the selection size and measure dialogs. The defaultis Pixel.

• LineaturesThe Lineatures allow to define what unit will be used to show Lin-eatures in the Separation window. Possibilities are lines/inch andlines/cm.

• AnglesWhen screening is measured, normally an angle between 0 and90º is shown. However when line screens or elliptical screens aredetected, an angle can be shown in a 0 - 180º range, or in a -90º-- +90º range, according to the setting of the Angles preferences.

• DirectionThis defines the Direction used for angles : counter clockwise(CCW) or clockwise (CW)

• Zero AtThis defines the zero point for angles: north (up), east (right),south (down) or west (left).

• DensitiesDensities allow to define whether densities should be represent-ed in percentages (0...100%) or in system values (0...255)

• Density AreaUsing the Density Area, the area to be measured with the Densi-tometer can be defined. The default is an area of 8 by 8 pixels.Other possibilities are 4 x 4, 2 x 2 or 1 dot measurement.

• DensityIf Density is set to “as in file”, DotSpy will use the polarity (negativeor positive, black or white) from the file to calculate densities, andwill NOT take the positive / negative preview setting into account. If Density is set to “As on display”, the polarity of the preview onscreen is used.

• Ink CoverageThe Ink Coverage allows to find if ink coverage should be repre-sented in % (of the total surface), in square mm or in square inch.Note that the Ink Coverage is calculated using the polarity of thefile. A positive or negative preview on the screen does NOT influ-ence the Ink Coverage.

• Info UnitsThis allows to define if info from the file itself should be shown inthe units defined in the file (As in File) or defined in the preferences(As in Preferences).

2.1.4 Display

• Monitor SizeBy setting the size of the Monitor, the Actual Size function willwork correctly.

• Grid SizeThe Grid defines a grid shown in light grey lines. If the Grid dis-tance is too small, or the zoom too low, the grey lines of the gridwill not be shown. If Grid size is set to 0 pixels, no grid will beshown. Default is a 1 pixel grid.

• Sort SeparationsThe Sort Separations option allows to prepare the Tiffs for use inDry Offset. At least 2 separations are needed. If Sort Separation is set to “For Dry Offset”, DotSpy will order theseparation on lightness, upon merging the separations for a com-posite preview. The first separation, on top in the separation window, will be thedarkest, the lightest will be at the bottom.

This can be used to measure lineatures : select lines/inch or lines/cm in the preferences, and measure from one dot to another. Thedistance value as shown in the measured values is the lineature.By holding the Shift key, the measuring angle is constrained to mul-tiples of 15 degrees. When clicking i.o. dragging, the values shownwill be the coordinates of the selected point.

If the vertical or horizontal distance is 0 (i.e. measuring exactly ver-tical or horizontal), the position will be shown i.o. distance. This willbe represented by a V or a H instead of dv or dh.

5.11. 2 Point Distance

The 2 Point Distance works the same as the Distance tool. The dif-ference is that the distance to be measured is defined by 2 clicks. The first click defines the start point, the second defines the secondpoint. Click and drag allows to move the point before setting it.

Shortcut: q - 2, Two Point Distance

5.12. Guides

The Guides function allows to place and move a ruler and guides.By clicking in the job, a set of guides (vertical and horizontal) will becreated.

The first created guide vertical and horizontal will become the ruler: it will have a scaling, and it will determin the origin of the job. Thezero point for the scaling will be in the intersection of both rulers.

If e.g. the vertical ruler is defined, but the horizontal isn’t (it has beenremoved), clicking in the job will create a vertical guide, and a hori-zontal ruler. If there is no (vertical and/or horizontal) ruler, the originwill be at the top and/or left corner of the job.

To move one ruler or guide, click and drag using the Guides tool.To move a vertical and horizontal ruler or guide together, click anddrag the intersection. To remove a ruler or guide, move over it usingthe Guides tool, so that it highlights, and hit the backspace key.

Guides can be saved and loaded using Load Guides and SaveGuides. See 3.4. Load Guides on page 15 and 3.5. Save Guideson page 16.

5.13. Densitometer

The Measure function allows you to measure the density in the job.

After selecting the function, click and drag the area youwant to measure. Underneath the cursor, two values areshown : the number of actual pixels in the area, and theink coverage percentage for that area. The Values per separationare shown in the Show Separation Extended window (see later).

If the function is clicked i.o. dragged, the densitometer size definedin the preferences will be used.

5.14. Raster Analyser

The Raster Analyser tool analyses the screen of the visible separa-tions, based on the place where the function is applied. Whenclicked, a rectangular zoom area will be shown. All visible separa-tions will be analyzed one by one. The screening angle is shown bymeans of two red lines. Above this preview, a dialog is opened in-dicating the measured screening angle and ruling. The best resultsare achieved by clicking in a mid-tone area. Keep in mind that, de-pending on the place that is analyzed, the angle may be slightly dif-ferent.

The dialog opened showing the angle and ruling, is a modal dialog, meaning all other functions in the application are unavailable untilyou hit the OK button. The information is also shown in the extend-ed view of the separation window.

By holding down the shift key, a + is added in the cursor, and themeasuring square will be twice as big. This can be useful to have amore accurate result on screens with a low ruling, but it will take alonger time to calculate.

5.15. Bar Code Analyser

The Bar Code Analyser can measure barcodes. It will measure thecode, the magnification and the bar with reduction.

Keep in mind that slight deviations between the originally appliedvalues (e.g. bar width reduction entered in the DTP application) andthe values measured in DotSpy can occur. The higher the resolutionof the file, the more accurate the reading result will be. Bar width re-duction values are normally very small, so these are not always rec-ognized.

Reading a bar code is done by dragging a rectangleover a bar code. The reading direction is indicated bya center line, and is determined by the width/heightratio of the dragged rectangle.

24

DotSpy 4.5 User ManualView Menu 5

This means you can also drag a “line” over the bar code, the readingdirection will be correct.

If a bar code was recognized, it will be shown in a modular dialog, containing the Bar code type, the code, and (if applicable) the mag-nification (if different than 100%) and bar width reduction. Keep inmind that bar code generating applications are not always using thesame size for 100% magnification, as for some barcodes, the 100%size is not defined in the barcode specifications.

In some cases, there is more than one possible recognition for thebar code, e.g. an ISBN bar code will also be recognized as a EANcode, since the ISBN is based the EAN standards.

If multiple results are found, the dialog will show “...”, and clickingthe OK button will open the next possible result.

Underneath you find an overview of the bar codes that are support-ed.

• APBRecognized as a “Belgian Pharma”.

• CodabarRecognized as a “Traditional Codabar” or a “Codabar”.

• CIP 39 & Code 39Recognized as a “3 of 9” bar code.

The Anti Alias function (see Anti-Alias on page 10) can be switchedon or off in the View menu, in the Preferences or with its shortcut

Shortcut: q - T, Toggle Antialias

5.17. Keep windows in sync

Keep windows in sync is a function allowing to compare jobs in dif-ferent windows. The idea is to keep both windows at the same scal-ing and panning position. A zoom or pan function done in onewindow will apply the same zoom or pan to all other open windows.

• Example :* open the cyan, magenta and black separation of a job, using theOpen File command, and selecting all three files* Tile windows, e.g. with the Tile Vertical in the Windows menu* switch the Keep Windows in Sync toggle on* change zoom in one of the windows. You will notice the zoomchanging in the other windows as well, allowing to navigatethrough all 3 windows at the same time, with the same zoom andpan

The toggle can be switched on in the View menu, or with its shortcutShortcut: q - K, Keep windows in sync

5.18. Show/hide toolbar

The Show/Hide toolbar function shows or hides the toolbar, con-taining all frequently used functions and buttons. When another application is selected in the Finder, the toolbarslides up a bit, so only the bottom part remains visible. This makesit easy to reactivate DotSpy, simply by clicking somewhere in theToolbar

5.20. Show Separations

the Show Separation dialog allows tohide or show some or all separationson the screen. The dialog can beopened by selecting it in the Viewmenu, by using its shortcut q - x -Y or by its toolbar button.

5.20.1 All / Single Separation

By default, all separations are shown. By switching the All checkboxon, all separations will be selected. By switching the All checkboxoff, all separations except the first will be switched off. Regardlessof the setting of this checkbox, separations can be switched on andoff individually.

If only one separation is switched on, the setting of the Single Sep-aration checkbox is taken into account : if the Single Separationcheckbox is on, and a single separation is activated, activating an-other separation will deactivate the first. This makes it very easy tosee all separations one by one. In order to view some of the sepa-rations, either select all and deselect the separations you do notwant to show, or deselect All, switch off the Single Separation andselect the separations you want to see.

5.20.2 Opaque If an ink used in the file is an opaque ink (such as gold, silver, ...)switching the Opaque checkbox next to it will adjust the preview toshow the actual result. When opaque inks are involved, moving theseparation up or down in the list changes the print order, which willbe reflected in the preview.

5.20.3 Show Differences Only

Show Differences Only will only show the exclusion of all shownseparation. This means only the pixels not on top of other pixels willshow. This can be very handy to compare separations. In order todo so, the files need to be opened in the same window. For twoseparations coming from different jobs to be compared, you canput them in a folder, and then open this folder using the Open JobFolder command.

5.20.4 Defining / redefining inks

When opening one or more one-bit TIFF files, DotSpy needs to findthe color representation for the opened one-bit TIFFs. There are 3ways where DotSpy can get the color information

29

Page 30: User Manual - Eskodocs.esko.com/docs/en-us/dotspy/4.5/userguide/Dotspy_45... · 2014-02-28 · DotSpy 4.0 User Manual DotSpy Menu 2 7 2.1.3 Units •Dimensions The Dimensions allow

• Special TagIf the one-bit Tiff was created including Special Tags (see AllowSpecial Tags in the Nexus Manager, Assemble Separation activ-ity), this tags will contain color information that can be used byDotSpy to show separations in the correct colors.

• Ink BookIf the Special Tag is not available, DotSpy will search for the inkinformation in the ink book. If an inkbook is placed in the prefer-ences folder, this inkbook will be used to look up inks. If there isno ink book found in the preferences, DotSpy will use the 6 builtin colors (CMYK, Orange and Green)

• (re)define inks in Show Separations

In the Show Separations dialog, double-clicking on one of thecolor squares (in front of the separation names), opens the inkbook dialog, in which an ink book can be selected, and an ink canbe defined or redefinedClicking on a color will immediately apply it to the active separa-tion in the Separations dialog. The Ink Book is an ASCII file, which e.g. can be found in the Art-Pro application folder. A personalized ink book can also easily becreated with a spreadsheet. The standard ink books, provided byArtwork Systems, are Pantone licensed.

The ink book starts with a standard header. In the header, thenumber of pantone colors defined in the ink book is defined un-der # Colors. The height indicates the number of rows this list will

In the colorlist, the first column contains the ink name, next the defaultscreen angle, the next column contains either a 0 or a 1, definingif the ink should be transparent or opaque by default. The last col-umns are the CMYK (Color on Proofer) and RGB (Color on dis-play) representations of this ink.You could for example add a few text lines in your ink book forgold: Gold 45 1 38 59 73 7 145 97 61

5.20.5 Change Separation Order

Changing the order of the separations can be done by clicking aseparation name (not the color square), and dragging it to the de-sired location. This can be used to manually adjust the separationorder, e.g. for Dry Offset. For more on Dry Offset, see 3.9. Save forDry Offset on page 16 and Sort Separations on page 9

5.21. Show Separations Extended

The Extended Show Separation Menu is available if the option isswitched on in the Preferences., or by clicking the Extend button(the green button in the dialog top line, next to the minimize button)

The Extended part of the Show Separations dialog shows Angleand Lines/Inch for every separation as last measured by the RasterAnalyser tool, and the Densities per separation and Total percent-age as last measured by the Densitometer tool.

The Calculate Ink Coverage calculates the ink coverage for all inks,in the units defined in the Preferences : in % of the total surface, insquare mm or in square inch.

Note that the Ink Coverage is calculated using the polarity of the file.A positive or negative preview on the screen does NOT influencethe Ink Coverage.

The Print button opens a regular Mac OS printing dialog, allowingto print the Ink Coverage data, or save it as a PDF.
