Welcome to Arthur®’s Wilderness Rescue™!
As the adventure begins, Arthur and the rest of Mr. Ratburn's class are on their way to Mt.Rockslide for a fun-filled camping trip. But, watch out! When Mr. Ratburn hurts his ankle, thegang must find a way to save the day! In this adventure, help guide Arthur and Buster throughthe woods near their campsite, looking for items to build a rescue device. Along the way, you'llexplore a dark cavern, find your food stolen by wild animals, take a breathtaking canoe ridedown a raging river, climb a hair-raising cliff, and find lots of fascinating wildlife!

Installation Instructions
Windows Installation
1. Insert the Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue disc into your CD drive.2. For systems with AutoPlay enabled, skip to step 4.3. For systems with AutoPlay disabled, choose RUN from the Start menu and type d:\setup
in the command line box, then click OK. (If your CD drive is not d:, substitute thecorrect drive letter.)
4. You will be asked if you want to install. Select YES and follow the on-screen prompts.5. Microsoft DirectX is required in order to play this game. DirectX will be installed on your
system if it is not present on your computer.6. When installation is complete, the Options screen appears. Select PLAY to begin the
game.
Windows�Starting the ProgramInsert the Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue disc into your CD drive.
� On systems with AutoPlay enabled, the Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue Options screenappears. Click PLAY to begin the game.
� On systems with AutoPlay disabled, go to the Start menu, select PROGRAMS, then THELEARNING COMPANY, then ARTHUR, then ARTHUR�S WILDERNESS RESCUE. TheOptions screen will appear. Click the PLAY button to begin the game.
NOTE: The Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue CD must be in your computer's CD drive at all timesduring installation and game play.
Macintosh Installation
1. Insert the disc into the CD-ROM drive. The CD window will open.2. Double-click the Arthur icon and follow the on-screen prompts. The installer will install
any extensions needed by your operating system. (You will not need to install againunless you remove the installed files.)
The Arthur disc must be in your computer's CD drive at all times during installation and gameplay.
Macintosh�Starting the Program� To play Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue, double-click on the Arthur icon. (The same icon
installs and launches the program.)There are additional applications on these discs. To run any of these programs, double-clicktheir icons.

The Options Screen (Windows®)
On Windows machines, an Options screen will appear on your desktop when you choose torun the program. On machines with auto-play, this screen will appear automatically when thedisc is inserted, once the program has been installed.
From this screen you can select any of the following options:
Play�Play Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue by clicking on the Play button.
Demos�View demos of other Arthur products by clicking on the Demos button.
Reinstall/Uninstall�Reinstall the program files to a different location on your hard drive oruninstall the program by clicking here.
Help�Open the Help file by clicking on the Help button.
Quit�Quit the program and return to the desktop by clicking on the Quit button.

After inserting the Arthur CD into your Macintosh, the CD Window will automatically open. Youcan access all of the following options from the CD Window.

Using the Mouse
These arrows mean that Arthur and Bustercan walk in the direction of the arrow orexit the scene.
An open hand means that Arthur andBuster can pick the item up to use or placein the backpack.
A hand cursor shows that the item,character, or area is clickable.
When the cursor changes to a camera, clickto find a hidden nature surprise!

Arthur's Backpack
When Arthur and the gang first arrive at the Mt. Rockslide parking lot, there's already a problemto solve! Mr. Ratburn has misplaced the map, and he needs it to lead the group down the trail tothe campsite.
Perhaps Arthur has the map in his backpack. Click on the red backpack icon in the lower leftpart of the screen to see the contents of Arthur's backpack!
As you continue through the adventure, keep checking Arthur's backpack to see if he's pickedup anything that might be helpful.
Arthur's backpack contains the Nature Notebook, as well as The Brain's list of other stuffneeded.
The Game Controls icon, next to the backpack on the lower left of the screen, will take you tomore options for the game. You can also press the space bar to see the Game Controls screen.

Arthur's Nature Notebook
Click on Arthur's Backpack to find Arthur's Nature Notebook. Here, Arthur keeps pictures andinformation about all the different types of wildlife he's seen in the woods.
Mr. Ratburn will challenge the class to find 10 mammals, birds, insects or wildflowers! If Arthurfinds more wildlife than Francine, Mr. Ratburn will award him a Junior Ranger certificate at theend of the adventure.
Read/Stop icon: Click here to hear Arthurread the nature description, or to stop hisreading.
Print: Click here to print the notebook page.
Arrows: Click here to scroll through thenotebook items.
To Exit: Just click anywhere outside the notebook. To exit the game, click the exit arrow onthe bottom right of the screen.

The Game Controls Icon
There are several options on the Game Controls screen:
Save:Click on one of the blank squares to save your game. A snapshot of your screen will appear inthe slot. If you click on a square that already has a snapshot, you will erase that saved game.Players can save up to six games. If your saved game looks like someone else's, use the coloredborders around the snapshots to tell them apart. You can also type "S" on the keyboard toreach this screen.
Load:When you click the Load button, you'll see the snapshots from all saved games. To play one ofthe games, just click on that snapshot. You can also type "L" on the keyboard to reach thisscreen.
Quit:Click here to leave Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue.
Sound:Here, you can turn the music off and on, and control the music's volume. You can also controlthe volume of the characters� voices.

The Brain's Rescue Devices
Every time you play Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue, you can choose to build a different rescuedevice to signal for help! Each device includes several different items that Arthur and his friendswill need to find.
The Brain will give Arthur and Buster a list of the items he needs for the rescue device. Look inArthur's Backpack to find this list. A checkmark will appear beside each item that Arthur andBuster have found. Move your mouse over the item to see if you've already given it to theBrain. If not, the item will highlight. Arthur can also ask the Brain which items are still missing.
The Devices include:
The Brain's Radio
The Brain has a radio to signal for help, but it's broken. Arthur and Buster need to find thefollowing things so that The Brain can fix it.
� Electric Motor (to power the radio)� Springs (to help build a microphone)� Magnet (also part of the microphone)� Metal Dish (to use as an antenna)� Wire (also part of the antenna)
Binky's Signal Mirror
Binky has a brainstorm! The gang can rig up a signal mirror that uses sunlight to flash messagesusing Morse code. The Brain knows Morse code, but he's afraid of heights. Arthur will have tocarry the mirror to the top of Mt. Rockslide!
Arthur and Buster need:� Binoculars (for The Brain to see the signal mirror at the top of Mt. Rockslide)� Mirror (used to reflect sunlight and signal the Morse code message)� Backpack Frame (used to hold the device together)� Jar Lid (used as lens to help Arthur point the mirror in the right direction)� String (for The Brain to control the tilting mirror from the bottom of the cliff)
Francine's Kite
Francine came up with the kite idea, but it was Buster who turned it into a rescue device! Thegang needs to make a kite with the word "Help!" on it and fly it from the highest spot they canfind.
Arthur and Buster need to find:� Lightweight fabric (for the kite material)� Mirror (to hang from the kite's tail and attract attention)� Blueberries (used to make ink to paint the help message)� Fishing Rods (used as a frame for the kite)� String (used to fly the kite)

Mini Activities
Mr. Ratburn's Tent
Arthur needs to pitch Mr. Ratburn's tent so that Mr. Ratburn can comfortably rest his ankle.D.W. is there to give Arthur help, even if he doesn't think he needs it!
Click on a piece of the tent to pick it up. Click it again to put it down. Fit the parts of the tenttogether just like the one in the picture. Use the colors to help match the pieces together.Use the shape in the background as a guide to put the pieces in the right place.
Muffy's Tent
Muffy has one of the rescue items, but she won't give it to Arthur unless he pitches her tent forher.
Click on a piece of the tent to pick it up. Click it again to put it down. Fit the parts of the tenttogether just like the one in the picture.
Balance Cross
The bridge is out across the river, and at first you're unable to cross. But after Arthur finds away to make a new bridge with a fallen log, Arthur and Buster must make their way across.
To help Arthur keep his balance on the log, watch which way he's falling, and then click yourmouse on the opposite side of the log. For example, if Arthur is falling to the right, click on theleft side. Or use the arrow keys.
Cave Maze
Arthur finds spooky caverns underneath the Haunted Cabin. Where will they lead?
Use your mouse to help Arthur walk through the maze. Click anywhere on the screen to haveArthur walk in that direction. Or, if you prefer, you can use the arrow keys on your keyboard.Good luck!
If the dark cave gets too scary, just click where Arthur entered, and he'll leave the maze. Nexttime you go through the cave, the flashlight will be even brighter, and Arthur will be able to seethe entire maze!
Canoe Ride
Arthur and Buster find a canoe dock on the river in front of the cabin. They jump in for a wildride, but safety first! The canoe has two life jackets for them to wear.
To help Arthur and Buster paddle down the river, click your mouse to the right or left. Or usethe arrow keys. Watch out for rocks and logs in the river. The better you do, the faster Arthur& Buster will go!
Cliff Climb
Arthur must climb to the top of Mt. Rockslide, the highest point around, to signal for help withthe rescue device. It's a scary climb, but Francine will go first to lead the way.
� To help Arthur climb the cliff, click on each ledge you want him to jump to. IfArthur can jump to a ledge, it will highlight. Watch out for crumbling ledges�someof these ledges aren�t very stable. And keep an eye out for falling rocks!

Printing
There are 3 different types of printables in Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue. Whenever you see aprinter icon, click on it to print the printable you see onscreen.
� Nature Notebook items: Scroll through the Nature Notebook to choose the mammal,bird, insect, or wildflower you'd like to print. Then click on the Print icon.
� Junior Ranger certificate: If you've found more of the right type of wildlife thanFrancine, Mr. Ratburn will award this certificate at the end of the game. When you see itonscreen, just click the Print icon to print.
� Ranger's Stories: At the end of the adventure, the Ranger tells Arthur and his friends acampfire story. Before he tells the story, click the Print icon to print it out.
Keyboard Shortcuts
� ESC or <ENTER>: Pressing either of these keys will interrupt any animation in thegame, including all intro and ending movies.
� S: Pressing this key brings up the "Save Game" screen (also accessible from the GameControls screen)
� L: This brings up the "Load Game" screen (also accessible from the Game Controlsscreen)
� SPACEBAR: Pressing the space bar brings up the Game Controls screen� F1: "F1" (the function key found at the upper left of most keyboards) provides help
dialogue for that scene.
Game Hints
Can't Grab the Rope?Try using something else to hook the rope. Otherwise, Arthur and Buster will be dangerouslyclose to that rockslide edge! They might fall down the rockslide!
Haunted Cabin Locked?Maybe there is a key somewhere nearby. Try looking around that mysterious building behindthe cabin.
Having Trouble Clearing Away the Tree?Arthur and Buster might need to find something to cut the tree apart so that they can go insidethe lean-to.

Character Descriptions
Arthur
The hero of dozens of stories, Arthur is a shy, thoughtful, bespectacled 8-year-old. Who butArthur would think to get a Christmas gift for Santa Claus? Arthur�s no goody-goody, but he�spersistent and hardworking, and he takes his responsibilities seriously. Sensitive and reflective,he is often worried about what others think of him, but he usually solves his own problems. Heloves soccer and TV�s Bionic Bunny, and his favorite foods include cheeseburgers, pizza, andchocolate cream pie.

D.W.
D.W. (short for Dora Winifred) is Arthur�s precocious, wisecracking little sister. She�sindependent and not afraid to speak up�especially when giving Arthur advice! Though sheoften gets on Arthur�s nerves, it is D.W. to whom he usually turns first when he needs toborrow money. When D.W. does not have all the answers, she turns to her imaginary friendNadine to discuss her feelings (and claims it is Nadine who needs the night light on at bedtime).

Francine
One of Arthur�s best friends, Francine has a not-so-secret crush on him. (Her birthday presentto him was a �Spin the bottle� game.) She enjoys teasing Arthur and embarrassing him inpublic�and in general has a reputation for mischief. Her nickname �Slugger� is well deserved:she�s the best hitter on the school softball team. Brash and bright, she�s an explorer and adoer�and pushes Arthur to try things he�d never dream of doing otherwise! Francine likespistachio ice cream and scary movies.

Muffy
The daughter of the owner of Crosswire Motors, Muffy arrives at school in a limousine andbrings her mink coat to summer camp. Used to getting her own way, Muffy can bemanipulative. (She threatens that anybody who doesn�t come to her party won�t be her friendanymore.) She gets along well with adults, though, and is sometimes the teacher�s pet. Muffyloves shopping, and, like her best friend Francine (with whom she shares a middle name),enjoys pistachio ice cream and scary movies.

Buster
Arthur�s best friend, Buster, is a practical joker who likes to play tricks on friends andteachers�and has been known to spend time at the principal�s office. Buster laughs easily and isalways ready for fun. His asthma hasn�t kept him from enjoying soccer�or from playing thetuba in the school orchestra! An only child, Buster is often embarrassed by his very protectivemother.

The Brain
The smartest student in Arthur�s class, the Brain is much admired by the other kids. He readsdictionaries for fun, and, upon discovering frogs in his bed at camp, reacts with academicinterest: �Amphibians. How fascinating.� The Brain loves to eat and once dressed up as a bakedpotato for Halloween. He�s also good at sports, to which he brings his superior knowledge ofpsychology and physics. The Brain is colorblind, left-handed, and plays the cello in the schoolorchestra.

Binky
A year older than the other kids in Arthur�s class, Binky is a professional class bully. His favoritesport is professional wrestling. Binky�s a bit awkward about his size, and has a sensitive side he�scareful to hide. Despite his threats to pulverize Arthur, Binky becomes a friend when Arthurembarrasses him in public.

Mr. Ratburn
Mr. Ratburn is Arthur�s impeccably dressed, demanding teacher. Though the kids think he�s tootough (he�s been known to give a spelling test on the last day of class before summer vacation!),he really just respects the kids enough to push them. He�s also a quirky and creative teacher,taking the kids out to the lake for a life science lesson or dressing up as a historical figure they�restudying. Though willing to be goofy, Mr. Ratburn always keeps a professional distancebetween himself and the kids�and doesn�t let anybody know what�s in his desk�s secretdrawers!

Troubleshooting
Try this first! If you have problems running the program, try cleaning the CD. Gently removeany fingerprints and dust using a clean, soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water or a CD-cleaning solution. Avoid using materials such as tissue, which may scratch the CD.Note: This program requires that the disc be in the CD-ROM drive at all times when in use.
Windows®
1. The Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue program icon does not appear in the Start menu.� Make sure the product is already installed. Reinstall the program if necessary.
2. You see a message telling you that there is not enough availablespace on the hard disk.Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue requires 50 MB of hard disk space for the program�s data andexecutable files. (Additional hard disk space will be required to save player information formore than five players.)� Create some free hard disk space by removing some files after backing them up.
3. You see a message telling you that there is not enough memory to run theprogram.Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue needs at least 32 MB of installed memory (RAM) to run. Yourcomputer�s memory may be filled with other programs that are running in the background.� Close any other applications that are running, and restart the program.
4. The mouse doesn�t seem to work.There are times in the program when the animation or sound cannot be interrupted. Youwill see the hourglass cursor on the screen, and any key presses or mouse clicks will beignored.� Confirm that the mouse is properly connected to the computer.� Wait until the animation or sound stops and your normal cursor returns. Then try
pressing the keys or clicking the mouse again.
5. Program speed is very slow.Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue needs at least a Pentium 166 MHz computer with an 8x CD-ROMdrive for basic performance.� Close any other applications that are running.� Remove non-essential applications from your Startup folder.� Make sure that you have the latest Windows video drivers for your graphics card.
(Contact the video card manufacturer for the latest drivers.)
6. You do not hear music, sound, or speech.� Confirm that the speakers are properly connected to your computer. Make sure that they
are getting power and are turned on, and that the volume is turned up.� Make sure that your sound card is Windows compatible and is properly installed for
Windows. Be sure that the sound card is specifically designed to work with the version ofWindows that you are using. Also check that the volume is properly set. (See themanufacturer�s documentation for information relating to your sound card.)
� Make sure the mixer level setting is correct.Click on the Start button. Choose Programs from the Start menu. Next chooseAccessories. Then choose Multimedia (Windows 95) or Entertainment (Windows 98,Me, XP), and choose Volume Control. Make sure that the sliders on the mixer controlpanel are all the way up and that no mute buttons are selected.
7. Strange graphics appear; the game action stops unexpectedly.� Make sure you have the latest Windows video drivers installed. (Contact your video card
manufacturer for more information.)� Remove non-essential applications from your Startup folder.
8. Colors don�t look right.� Adjust your monitor�s color and brightness.� Turn off your screensaver.� Close any other applications that are running.� Make sure you have the latest graphics drivers installed.

9. The program window seems small.The program window may not fill the entire screen.
10.Nothing prints.� Make sure the printer is plugged in and switched on.� Check the indicator light on the printer to be sure the printer is �online� or �selected.�� Make sure the printer cables are connected tightly.� Make sure you have selected at least one print item from the Printing area. Where
applicable, make sure you have selected either Colored In or Outlined.� Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed.

11.When you print, pictures or text look faint, blurred, or streaky.� Check your print quality settings. (See your printer documentation.)� Replace your printer�s ink cartridge.
12.The printer displays an �out of memory� message.� Make sure your printer has at least 1 MB of memory.
Macintosh®
1. You do not see the Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue program icon on the desktop.� Make sure the program CD is inserted in the CD tray, printed side up.
2. You see a message that there is not enough space on the hard disk.Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue requires 50 MB of hard disk space for program data files.(Additional hard disk space will be required to save player information for more than fiveplayers.)� Create some free hard disk space by removing some files after backing them up.� Adjust the Virtual Memory setting to take less hard disk space.
(See your Macintosh documentation for more information.)
3. You see a message telling you that there is not enough memory to run theprogram.Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue requires at least 32 MB of installed memory (RAM) to run. Tryto increase available memory and then start the program again. � Turn off AppleTalk®.
4. The mouse doesn�t seem to work.There are times in the program when the animation or sound cannot be interrupted. Youwill see the watch cursor, and any key presses or mouse clicks will be ignored.� Check that the mouse is properly connected to the computer.� Wait until the animation or sound stops and your normal cursor returns. Then try
pressing the keys or clicking the mouse again.
5. The music and voices in the game are too loud or too soft.� Choose Volumes from Control Panels. Adjust your system�s speaker volume as needed
by selecting the Volume setting.
6. You do not hear music, sound, or speech.� Check that the Volumes setting in the Sound control panel is not set to zero.� If you have external speakers, make sure they are turned on and getting power and that
they are properly connected to your computer. Also check the speaker volume.� Turn off or remove from the System Folder non-Apple control panels and extensions.
(Leave the CD-ROM drivers.) Restart your computer.
7. You hear popping noises in the game sounds and character voices.� Check the speaker connection to the computer.� Close all other applications.
8. The program window seems small.The program window may not fill the entire screen.� Some monitors are not able to display the program at the optimum display setting, so
the program may not fill the entire screen.
9. Program speed is very slow, or sounds and animations do not play smoothly.Arthur�s Wilderness Rescue needs at least a 180 MHz Power Macintosh computer with a 8XCD-ROM drive for basic performance.� Close all other applications.� If you must have virtual memory on, reduce the amount of virtual memory allocated.
10.Nothing prints.� Make sure the printer is plugged in and switched on.� Check the indicator light on the printer to be sure
the printer is �online� or �selected.�� Make sure the printer cables are connected tightly.� Make sure you have selected at least one print item from
