research projects from a variety of
academic institutions.
A simple process which allows
individuals to donate to a specific project
that is most meaningful to them.

and donors!

• Disease Education
• Photos & Videos
• Convenience
• Quality vs. Quantity
• Saying “Thank You!”
What Didn’t Work
• Flooding social media
• Wrong thinking:
Quantity of posts = quality of
being heard and engagement
• Ignoring SocMed Analytics

Pros:
• Generated material funds for our programs
• Raised broad awareness
• Built momentum and excitement within and outside our community
• Built social media base and PR that we continue to leverage
• Opened relationship opportunities
Cons:
• Extremely exhausting and emotionally draining
• “Roman Battle” between NPOs, causes, and communities
• Playing field changed significantly after first generation of contests
• Fun on the way up, not as much on the way down
Voting Contests: Pros & Cons
• Gave a template to navigate early obstacles and build a successful
organization
• Helped us understand what was possible technologically
• Focused on technology that fits within our overall strategy; we’ve
resisted trying to do everything
• But we haven’t been afraid of testing and trying new things
• Don’t rely too heavily on one avenue or technology; adapt to the ever-
changing landscape
• Be honest about your strengths/weaknesses; know when to do it
yourself or partner
• Be relentless; your passion and story is your biggest asset
Startup Experience
• Don’t just invest in tech– invest
in the RIGHT tech
• Constant cost/benefit analysis
• Build or buy or partner or pass?
• There is always a cost to using
“free” services
• Utilize your network to reduce
cost
