Get ready for question at end of presentation.

Response should be a tweet.

Details at end.

Twitter use in CAT class• Get opinion on class lesson• Positive – have used #Catrttsoft and #cl1ppt• Fits into Social networking theory Gr 12• Anticipated problems – bringing cell phones to school or Internet

use, can tweet after school hours if a problem• Start on computer, let learners use either• Use meaningful hashtags• Get bio and username correct• Give homework instructions via twitter ????• In summing up lesson use correct words for Back channel, social

networking, netiquette, trending, hashtag, user name, header photo, bio

Contents

• General • Textbook• Blogs• Videos• Rap• Comics• Posters• Quizzes• Digital exercises• Conclusion

‘Aim’ of teaching

• Do well in exams• Understand work• Apply information in own environment• Solve a problem

• Know vocabulary / language of subject• Use vocabulary / language of subject• Put in their own words

• Help process information• Present known information in exams

Use of ‘other’ in CAT / IT

• Exams are normal so …• Make it short, 2 or 3 periods (should use time

for practical or PAT)• One ‘other’ feature at a time• Focus on Aim of teaching

• My belief – Use of school textbooks is all that is necessary – do not waste time on the Internet as there is no end

Textbook

• One size fits all - generic• Usually come with media such as video, ppts, notes,

exercises – use them• Must adapt to individual needs• Textbook is a synopsis of what must be taught - add

for yourself – localise it – make it meaningful for YOUR learners

• Use the textbook – it had been approved, is based on CAPS

• Use activities to force reading of textbook

Learner created blogs

• Start off well. Use for short time. Tricky to maintain• Often blocked by network administrator• Learners forget passwords• Must be set up so that own words are required, so

learner process the work, not do a copy / paste• Comments must be required• Nice thing - comments can be anonymous• Assessment criteria - link with language department ??• In summing up lesson use correct words, e.g. bandwidth,

upload / download speed, file size, netiquette

Teacher created blogs

• Homework, links can be put on blog• Make sure access is possible• Blogger is easier for me to use than WordPress• Must be able to upload files for learners to

access and comment if there is a problem

Learner created videos

• Use Windows Live Movie Maker• Short, clear• Photos - local situation, camera/cell phone• Add text, position it correctly• In summing up lesson use correct words for transferring

image file, file size, upload/download speed, file types• Start of creating a video of images of right angles and circles• CAT example of videos – video of images of networking

features in class, e.g. images of switch, UTP cable, port, wireless modem

Use of ready-made videos

• Can use over and over again• Can use when it suits you• Useful so learners can work at their own

speed• Bored – say with the speaker (karaoke), turn

off the sound and let a learner give the talk, mock the speaker

Rap• Learners are initially scared• Seem to repeat sections of textbook• Make with cell phone, recording in PowerPoint or …• Comes in different file formats – check where they

can be used or just play alone• Ask learners to produce printed text as well as sound

file (necessary for those teacher whose ears are not suited to this type of music)

• In summing up lesson use correct words such as file extensions, viewing them

Create comic

• Create the comic online and then use a screen dump / screen capture to save it and use off line

• Use any comic creation tool such as – Write Comics http://www.writecomics.com/ – Make Belief Comix http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/ – Pixton http://www.pixton.com/uk/ – Strip Generator http://stripgenerator.com/ – Bit strips http://www.bitstrips.com/

• Suggestion – on Viruses, Backup• Tutorials – Check YouTube

Posters

• Old exam question and memo• Must create a poster to answer a question• Short, clear in poster format• Use WordArt, textboxes, shapes, SmartArt• Print in A3 colour, laminate, put in place

where it can be read

Quizzes

• Useful to consolidating knowledge of content• Can set questions with different levels• Can set them to redo, or for final• Best for formative assessment• Tricky to set 'applying' questions• Do not ask learners to create questions – poor• Use Evalunet, Moodle

Digital exercises

Conclusion

• New media does not fit in with CAPS assessment

• Nice to ‘apply’ and revise a lesson• Join with a willing department for assessment• Be aware that learners may not do the activity

– they may say ‘No assessment, no work’• Make it fun but does not take too much time

away from PAT and Practical
