Integration of myWriteSmart with iParadigms Turnitin® originality checking and ETS e-rater® essay evaluation is now available in Collections. When performance tasks are assigned in HMH myWriteSmart, teachers can set assignments to be checked through these two well-known tools.

• Turnitin ® checks students' work for improper citation or potential plagiarism by comparing it against the world's largest academic database. An overall originality assessment appears in myWriteSmart, and the teacher can drill down to see what portions of the student’s work appear in other sources.

• The ETS e-rater® engine provides real-time diagnostic feedback about grammar, usage, mechanics, style and organization, and development through GradeMark® that teachers can use to help assess a student’s work. For Interactive Writing Lesson writing prompts in myWriteSmart, e-rater® also provides an holistic score against the 4-point rubric used in the Collections program.

• Prompts may be edited by the teacher before assigning.• When setting up the assignment, the teacher clicks Enable Turnitin

within the assignment window.

NOTES• For ease of use, create

assignments from the Browse or Search in Resources section of the Dashboard rather than from Assignments.

• Turnitin® must be enabled if you want to see students’ Originality Scores or if you want students to view their Originality Scores before submitting their papers.

3. The student works on the assignment. After the teacher creates an assignment, the student uses myWriteSmart to• Get teacher assistance or feedback through the Inline Comments feature

Page 7: Using Turnitin ® and ETS e-rater ® with myWriteSmart September 24, 2014

4. The student requests an (optional) originality check.

To activate the optional originality check before submission, the student clicks Turnitin in the right-hand navigation panel and chooses Request a Check.

NOTES• Percentages shown in

Tutnitin® are percentages of potentially unoriginal text.

• Student originality checks should be treated as learning experiences and used to help students spot incorrect citations and potential plagiarism..

• The teacher will only see the final originality score, which may not match what the student sees if the student makes further changes before submitting.

Page 8: Using Turnitin ® and ETS e-rater ® with myWriteSmart September 24, 2014

5. The student sees results of originality check.Within minutes, the system returns a percentage of unoriginality. The student can select the percentage to view more details. Within myWriteSmart, the student can then revise the paper to avoid plagiarism before submitting it to the teacher.

NOTES• The Turnitin® check requires a little

wait time. If the score does not appear after 5 minutes, slide the Turnitin® panel in and out by clicking on Turnitin® and a score should appear.

Page 9: Using Turnitin ® and ETS e-rater ® with myWriteSmart September 24, 2014

Page 10: Using Turnitin ® and ETS e-rater ® with myWriteSmart September 24, 2014

7. The teacher is notified of a submission.

The teacher selects the specific assignment from the myWriteSmart dashboard, and then chooses the name from the Student List drop-down to view the submission.

NOTES• Assignments can also be

accessed through the Assignments title on the Teacher Dashboard; however accessing the assignment directly from the myWriteSmart gadget avoids an unnecessary window.

Page 11: Using Turnitin ® and ETS e-rater ® with myWriteSmart September 24, 2014

8. The teacher evaluates the essay with the help of Turnitin® analysis.

The teacher selects Turnitin to view a percentage for the originality check or selects e-rater to view feedback on grammar/usage/mechanics. For trained prompts tied to digital writing collections, e-rater® returns an holistic score. Clicking the percentage or e-rater button launches a Document Viewer with more information.

NOTES• Originality scores are expressed

in percentage of unoriginal text.• Selecting either the percentage

or e-rater® brings up the Document Viewer shown on the next slide.

• The Document Viewer is in a separate window outside of the myWriteSmart environment. No direct communication between student and teacher can take place in that window. All communication takes place in the myWriteSmart environment.

• Use your device’s viewer tray (or F3 on a Mac) to toggle back and forth between open windows if needed.

The default view is Originality, showing percentage of matches against the Turnitin® database of original sources.

Page 13: Using Turnitin ® and ETS e-rater ® with myWriteSmart September 24, 2014

10. The teacher can review automated marking of potential errors in grammar, usage, and

mechanics.• Either by clicking on the GradeMark tab on top, or by clicking on the e-rater button in the side menu of myWriteSmart, the teacher can get a detailed report from e-rater®, showing all the flags that e-rater® noticed in evaluating the essay.

NOTES• If a Feedback button appears

on the e-rater view, please note that it opens a new window that submits feedback to Turnitin®.

If the essay is from an Interactive Writing Lesson assessment, ETS e-rater® will also return a holistic score here.

Page 14: Using Turnitin ® and ETS e-rater ® with myWriteSmart September 24, 2014

11. The teacher can also access advanced ETS e-rater® tools.

In the GradeMark view, the teacher can use advanced tools to mark up the paper. QuickMark [QM] also allows teachers to create and use marking stamps.

NOTES• The teacher can highlight and

annotate text, delete/strikethrough text, record voice comments, and create custom QuickMarks. However, using the Inline Comments and Messages tools within myWriteSmart will provide feedback that’s much more visible to students.

• The PeerMark option at the top of the viewer is inactive in the myWriteSmart version because that tool would duplicate actions taking place in myWriteSmart.

Page 15: Using Turnitin ® and ETS e-rater ® with myWriteSmart September 24, 2014

12. The teacher considers the myWriteSmart rubric, along with feedback from the Document

Viewer.

Rubrics are available through the myWriteSmart Resources icon.

Page 16: Using Turnitin ® and ETS e-rater ® with myWriteSmart September 24, 2014

13. The teacher comments, assigns a score, and accepts the essay.

The student can view his/her grade from the student dashboard or by clicking Assignments. Within the assignment itself, the student can select Turnitin to view the teacher’s feedback if the teacher has chosen to provide comments within the Document Viewer rather than in myWriteSmart.

NOTES• Any comments you have noted

through the Document Viewer are visible to a student within the student’s Document Viewer only after you have “accepted” the student’s writing in myWriteSmart.
