History of the Usk Valley Working Gundog Club

The Usk Valley Working Gundog Club was formed, as with many other clubs, by a few individuals interested in training their dogs to a reasonable standard. The 'roots' of the Club were planted back in the early 1990's when two couples, Ron and Barbara Hempstead and Pat and Howard Williams, met every week to train their dogs. These 'training sessions' took place on Ron and Barbara's ground at Cobblers Plain, which is not too far from Chepstow. As the weeks and months passed so the 'training sessions' became more popular, expanding to such a level that the 'founders' decided a club should be formed. The club was formed and the inaugural meeting was held on Sunday, 29th March 1992, where the first committee was elected from those 'members' present at The Carpenters Arms in Llanishen, near Chepstow. The club was then registered with the Kennel Club, and at the time boasted some 50 members. The first Chairman was Ron Hempstead, the Treasurer was Pat Williams and the Secretary was Julie Hanks. From that humble beginning the club has gone from strength to strength and now has a membership approaching 550. The Club was awarded field trial status in 1996 and ran its first Novice Retriever and Spaniel Trials the same year. In 2003 the Club ran its first Open Field Trial for Spaniels, followed in 2004 with its first one day Open for Any Variety Retriever. In 2009 the Club was granted permission to run its first 2 day Open for Any Variety Retriever, the first trial being run in 2010. As a club it still relates to its original concept, that of providing training for its membership. In the early days well-known trainers would be invited to come along to the club’s ground and give training lessons; these training events are as popular with the membership today as they were a decade or so ago.

Chairman’s Report

Dear Members, It is an honour to be Chairman of Usk Valley Working Gundog Club and a pleasure to work alongside our hard working Committee members who once again organised a busy year of events which included: Retriever Working Tests, Spaniel Working Tests, Two AV Novice Retriever Field Trials, A Two-day AV Open Retriever Trial, a Novice AV Spaniel Field Trial, an Open ESS Spaniel Field Trial, Retriever and Spaniel Training Classes, Gundog Demonstrations at Monmouth and Usk Show and a Dog First Aid Course - a very busy year indeed and the schedule of events for 2018 has been published within this newsletter, but please visit our website for the most regular updates; www.uskvalleyworkinggundogclub.co.uk . I would like to thank the hard working Committee for their ongoing support and commitment to the Club and we all look forward to another successful year. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Committee Members, David Thomas, Simon Kirby, Nick Price, Steve Erasmus and Rhys Carpenter a very warm welcome to you all. In time honoured tradition my report is full of thank you’s. Thank you very much to the Hosts and Gamekeepers who have generously supported the Club by allowing the Club to run events on their land. Thank you very much to the Judges and thank you to Skinners Dog Food for generously supporting all of our events and to BASC for their generous sponsorship of the Field Trials. I would like to thank Iris Wright who volunteers to take on the role of Chief Steward at our Retriever Field Trials ensuring the Trials run smoothly - thank you Iris. This year we had a new volunteer, Karen McCarthy who very kindly took on the role of Chief Steward at one of our Novice Retriever Field Trials - thank you Karen very much. As we all know events cannot be organised without willing volunteer helpers, thank you all very much for generously giving up your time. The Club activities always need helpers, often behind the scenes but all vitally important to the successful running of the events. This can be, for new members especially, an excellent way of actually seeing what is required from both you and your dog to compete successfully. If you are interested in helping in any way please do not hesitate to contact me or any of our Committee. Thank you Sonja our Treasurer and Membership Secretary. Sonja does a wonderful job looking after the clubs funds and membership and is always available to give me help and support.

Unfortunately Craig is stepping down from the FT Secretary role but will be continuing on the Committee, we wish Craig every success. Our new FT Secretary is Nick Price, many of you may have met Nick at one of the events, please join me in wishing Nick every success in his new role. Thank you very much to Johnny Morris who organised the Retriever Working Tests and the Retriever Training Classes. Unfortunately Johnny is stepping down from these roles going forward but I am pleased to say he is remaining on the Committee. Johnny, as you all know, is always at all the events if not organising he is helping so we will all continue to see Johnny in the foreseeable future - thank you Johnny very much. Every year I ask for your feedback from you, our Members, so we can tailor events to suit as many as possible. We took on board your feedback and I am very pleased to welcome to the Committee, Simon Kirby, as HPR Working Test/Training Co-ordinator for HPR's. I know Simon is working on a timetable of events for our HPR members and we look forward to welcoming new HPR members to these events. If you have any suggestions on future events or how we can improve those already in place, or if there is anything that you would like to see on our web-site or Facebook page please contact either myself or one of the Committee. Wishing you and your dogs an enjoyable summer.

Best regards

Secretary’s Report

Usk Valley Working Gundog Club has had another successful year in membership growth, working test and field trial events and our demonstrations. None of this would have been possible without the support and dedication of our officers and committee, our members and competitors, volunteers, landowners, judges, guns and sponsors. On behalf of everyone involved in the Club in one way or another, I would like to extend our thanks to our Chairman, Debra Bird, who has done a fantastic job overseeing the running of the club and helped me and many others out endlessly. THANK YOU DEB.

2017 has seen a few changes within the committee and a few more to follow in 2018.

VICE CHAIRMAN Mr. Mike Shukman resigned from his role as Vice Chairman and the role has been taken on by Dr. Richard Price. SPANIEL WORKING TEST SECRETARY: Mr Glyn Hillier resigned from his role as Spaniel WT Secretary and the role was taken on by Ms Jane Stenner. RETRIEVER WORKING TEST SECRETARY: Mr Tyrone Axford (Sarge) resigned from his role as Retriever WT Secretary and more recently within the Committee. We are thankful to Sarge for all his time, effort and support over the last few years and wish him every success in the future. This role was temporarily taken on by Mr Johnny Morris and from 2018 will see Mr David Thomas take on the acting role, supported by Johnny. RETRIEVER FIELD TRIAL SECRETARY: At the end of 2017 season, Mr Craig Perry made a heavy hearted decision to resign from his role as Retriever FT Secretary. The Acting Retriever FT Secretary role will be taken on by Mr Nick Price who we wish the very best of luck. HPR WORKING TEST SECRETARY: Further to many requests from our members, we are pleased to announce and welcome Mr Simon Kirby to the committee and also into the role of Acting HPR Working Test Secretary and HPR Training Coordinator. Simon brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience and support in the HPR sector and we look forward to supporting him with the growth of this role. OFFICIAL TRAINER: Mr Glyn Hillier resigned from his role as Official Trainer and also the committee due to personal commitments. The role has been fulfilled by Mr Alan Willis, who is a long standing committee

member of the Club and will specialise in Spaniel Training. Mr David Thomas, supported by Mr Steve Erazmus will coordinate and run the Retriever Training and Mr Simon Kirby will provide us with HPR Training. RESIGNATIONS: Further to the above resignations, we have also seen Mr Darren Smith, Mrs Jill Bowler, Mr Nigel Probert, Mr Don Elson and Mr Tyrone Axford resign from the committee during 2017.

NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS: We have had the pleasure of welcoming Mr Russ Woodward, Mr David Thomas, Mrs Pat Williams onto the committee and Mr Simon Kirby, Mr Steve Erasmus, Mr Nick Price and Mr Rhys Carpenter who have been co-opted until the next AGM in May 2018. If anyone has any questions, queries or suggestions for the club, please do not hesitate to contact me on 07763 888177 or email me, [email protected] I am also keen to hear your good news stories and feedback on any of our events that I can publish on our website, in our newsletter and on our social media sites. I wish you all a very successful season and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible again soon.

Best regards

Treasurer’s Report

Once again, at the time of writing my Treasurer’s Report, I cannot produce the definite numbers as to how the Club has done financially over the past membership year, as that year has not quite finished yet – our Club year running from 1st March to 28/29th February. I can, however, with confidence, say that the Club has retained its strong financial position, despite the ever increasing costs of running trials and just about everything else, for that matter. But by careful planning and judiciously deciding on what is important and what is not, the Field Trial and Test Secretaries manage to keep control of the purse strings, while still running challenging and testing competitions. It helps that our tests, which tend to bring in some necessary funds, were, this past year, again well attended, and of course, we ran gundog demonstrations at both the Monmouth and the Usk shows, both of which were well received by the punters, and earned us enough money for there not to be any need at this stage to increase membership fees – which, by the way, still stand at £10 for a single membership and £12 for joint, and are due by 1st March!

Page 8: Usk Valley Working Gundog Club · Variety Retriever, the first trial being run in 2010. As a club it still relates to its original concept, that of providing training for its membership

For those of you who would like to see the exact figures for the 2017/18 year, these will be made available at our AGM, which will be held on 14th May, at the Clytha Arms, near Abergavenny, or they can, after that date, obtain them from me, by sending a SAE.

Rests me to say a big ‘thankyou’ to all those who helped to make the past year another successful one for the Club, that is, Committee members, ‘ordinary’ members, landowners who generously allowed us to use their ground for tests and trials, and BASC and Skinners Dogfoods for sponsoring us, where would we be without any of these!
